My 1999 just decided it wanted to do this today (on a less extreme scale so far), ironically the same day we were out car shopping and getting emissions done on this guy. 151k miles, we bought it less than a year ago. I've maintained it, but I've noticed signs that this would happen due to the previous owners problem with keeping up on maintenance. It has always sounded a bit on the rough side. I've done research, apparently there was a class action settlement about this problem in the early 2000s, the 5sfe and the 3.0 V6 from 1997-2001 were prone to sludge if not maintained. I wish I had been wise, I wouldn't have bought the car. Funny thing is, my dad drove his 2000 for 300k+ miles with the original equipment, then again he maintained it regularly. Lessons learned, thankfully it got us home.

is 85 knots enough to put out the fire? I think the poh says above 100knots which is outside the full flap range. I think faster is better in an engine fire situation. You have a better chance of putting the fire out and have a quicker descent. What was your reasoning for doing maneuver with full flaps?
@PaulFriz
@PaulFriz 3 жыл бұрын
This is how my instructor taught me to do the maneuver when I was working on my ppl. My understanding is that when you use full flaps you maximize drag which helps the airplane dissipate energy fastest and helps you get on the ground fastest. If there were a real fire you would probably want to go faster than 85 knots but since there was no fire we went at 85 knots so we didn't damage the flaps.
@hondacrxrus
@hondacrxrus 3 жыл бұрын
@@PaulFriz I just did an simulated fire emergency descent with my instruction we did with no flaps at 100kts and its very tricky bleeding off that speed right before you land. I did an S turn and added flaps as I slowed down. Thank you for your response.
@PaulFriz
@PaulFriz 3 жыл бұрын
@@hondacrxrus now that I think about it I remember my instructor telling me that if you are higher and trying to put out the fire that you can try diving at vne with no flaps to attempt to put out the fire but if you are trying to get on the ground as fast as possible do full flaps and maximum flap extension speed.
@hondacrxrus
@hondacrxrus 3 жыл бұрын
@@PaulFriz my experience you get higher FPM descent with no flaps and you can also slip a little to get more. I was over 2000 fpm without any slip. also my thought going to vne or at least 100 kts is good but you also want a turn to throw fire to side. but then going over Va you want to be careful maneuvering. I hope neither of us ever find ourselves in that situation.

So the earth is a perfect sphere and not an oblate spheroid as described by NASA. Wait.. Is this also from NASA?
@3iikka
@3iikka 7 жыл бұрын
It's an oblate spheroid, but the oblateness is only very small, so it can probably not be detected in such a small image. It's a common misunderstanding, just like the elliptical orbits of the planets. The orbits are called elliptical and are also often shown exaggerrated, which has lead to the misunderstanding among normal people, that they are very elliptical, while in reality, they are almost perfectly circular. Same misunderstanding happened with the oblateness of the earth and many other things in science. When non-scientists hear science, they very often misunderstand it, because they don't have enough information. That's why it would sometimes be better if people didn't believe what scientists tell them, because usually they misunderstand it.
