Don't try to act younger than you feel. Once, I was hiking with my son and I tried to hop over a log. My foot didn't get high enough and I tripped. I managed to roll as I landed, reducing the impact, but I think I cracked a rib. It didn't stop the hike, but that hurt some for about a month. Think before you try to act like a kid. Hiking is fun, but more fun if you don't hurt yourself. 😅

Good advice. Thank you. Last year in Oregon I must have hopped over 2000 blowdowns. Burn, the Husky, had no problem. However, 500 miles later I had the balance and agility to quickly dispatch blowdowns.

nice video Im 60 I hike just about every weekend I still carry a 40 pound pack. I clear deadfall all weekends sometimes and i refuse to give in until the day comes when I can not walk any more. im 20 in my head but sometimes my bones and muscles dont seem to agree.
@akwild113 сағат бұрын
Yes, I too have that disagreement between my head and body. Congrats on maintaining an active life, and thank you for clearing deadfalls. That's one last chance someone will impale themselves on the trail.
@davebloggs11 сағат бұрын
@@akwild1 I have been clearing deadfall here in the rockies for around 28 years now.. I like to focus on the less traveled trails of which there are many. as they tend to over grow fast and are easily lost over time. one day I may give in and get a battery chainsaw but until then i use silky saws they are amazing and the only fuel they need is motivation and food.

Thank you for this inspirational video. I'm 68. I'm in the fight. My occupation is to become good at foil surfing. My main goal is to maximize my health span. Habits: I shower with cold water without soap. I never eat junk food. I get up at 5:30 every morning. I ruck up and down a local hill. Then pushups, squats, pullups, dead hang. I never consume alcohol or drugs of any kind. I try to be thankful for my many blessings.

You covered a lot of constituents of a happy, long, healthy life. I published a video on giving up alcohol a few weeks ago, and that stirred up quite a positive reaction. I imagine you wouldn't mind a waterfall in lieu of a cold shower. Thank you for watching and your life-affirming tips. Happy Trails.

I was told by many older folks when I was a young guy "use it or loose it", they didn't just mean when you get older either. You do get something not unlike child like wonder back when you get older but I would argue it's different because you know your time is finite. Is there a better place to live your later chapters than in nature?

I would add a few things to the list, but i agree with your constituents if a happy life. Don’t let the old man in is a metaphor that includes pursuing all those good things that bring significance and avoiding those that inhibit it. Thank you for your comment and for watching.

If one needs to recite Clint Eastwood quote, ones has already let the old man in. Those who still vividly remember and make new memories like they did when they were 10 years old, kept the young person with them throughout life.

OMG, did I need this video. At the age of 62, my “old man” had completely taken over my life. With a knee replacement, hand surgery, bicep and full rotator cuff surgery, 2 back surgeries and still needing a 3rd, I almost died twice, once on the operating table and once a week after a surgery with 2 large blood clots that hit my lungs, I felt like I was 90 years old physically and mentally, only reliving a very active outdoor life, and just daydreaming of being able to do the passions of my past. I was very depressed and had seriously given up all hope to have anything more than a sedentary existence. Because of all these physical issues and during the covid years I had gained 60 pounds. I recently rededicated myself and have lost 25 pounds and am walking an hour and a half on the treadmill each day, where I could only do 4 minutes before. I use to hunt and fish, backpack, camp, canoe tripping for weeks around the U.S. and Canada, but for years I have been glued to my easy chair hardly able to move anymore with no motivation or joy in life. I really needed this video, it is helping me to convince myself that my life isn’t over yet. My goal is to get my canoe back out on the rivers and lakes and not throw away my last days. Life is a blessing and gift. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video. I would love to see more inspirational videos like this for those of us in this chapter of life.

I'm retired, and I was born almost 63 years ago. But when people ask my age I say "I'm eight and a half, I'll be nine on my next birthday" Okay its a bit cheesy but hey, if you go out and "play" every day like a child, you won't feel old. My hobbies are canoeing and mountain biking but I also do voluntary conservation work looking after squirrels and pine martens and surveying Kingfishers. There's too much to do out there so I agree, don't let that old man in.

I noticed at an early age that people who say I feel old or I’m getting old, become a mantra through life. And so they become old. I decided to change that mantra to I’m feeling and getting younger. Let the old person in means ones habits through life will be habits to make one old. To go through life with an I’m healing and getting younger attitude helps develop one’s habits toward healing and becoming younger. I’m a young 77 and this philosophy has definitely worked. Have a young lifestyle through life. The golden years mean being healthy and active through the years. Aloha

Absolutely. A fair number of people have warned me about the inevitability of decline, and I understand that. However, when I hiked the PCT at 62, I actually felt like I had not only halted the advance of age, but taken a few steps back into my youth. I felt better than when I was 40. I realize one day invalidism awaits, but I wake up each morning and say, "Not today." We'll see how long that lasts. Thank you for your wonderful comment.
