Hmm, I used Strathmore Bristol paper, its thicker like card stock, and the ink does soak into it a bit. I used lots of colors that are a shade or two from each other, the stepping up or down in values is the best way to get a gradient. I also did use the clear blending marker on areas that I didn't have the next step in the gradient to try to soften the transition. This doesn't mean you have to run out and buy ALL the colors. You just need to have a few in various colors that go up in value. I always start with the lightest values and then slowly go darker. Yes, if you get the water color sketchbook the pages are thick enough that you can use both sides, the only issue is that the two paintings may get stuck together when you close the book, I'd suggest using a piece of parchment paper between the pages to prevent sticking. You can buy this in the baking section at a grocery store.
