Designer here. Thank you for the thorough and thoughtful review. I think you might like the Manufactions expansion. It adds cards and vitamins as viable engine strategies as well as asymmetric player powers. Some of the powers are pretty game altering so it adds a lot of variety and replay value to the game.

The manufactions expansion is a must-have for me. It introduces vitamins into play (a new resource that adds or subtracts 1 from your dice results) and you start the game by selecting a corporate faction that grants unique powers and dictates how many resources you start the game with. Plus more contractors and more blueprints :)

Yes, for one, I'm not as precious as some about how the components are stored. In my opinion, when it doesn't spiral out of control, or when you are ok with it being a highly probable part of the game, and when you are ok with the underwhelming end of game resolve; then it is a really fun and challenging game. It never established a "wargame" feel for me. Yes, it does of course have the historical theme and it manifests it in many elements of gameplay but it never felt like a wargame to me. It's all way to steril and void of a perceivable human elements. I am not entirely sure how to precisely explain this notion. I had good and sometimes infuriated fun with it and then sold it off. Edit: Instead of Halls of Hegra, I would recommend a "Hill of Doves".

Great review, thank you! This game has been tickling my interest for a while now, but I'm neither a war gamer, nor do I avoid war games, I guess I'm somewhere in the middle? I'm usually more fascinated by historical or real world themes in games by default, although I'm not much into history. John Company, Pax Ren, Pax Em, Robinson, Nemo's War - these sort of games peak my interest just from a quick glance and Halls of Hegra falls straight into that category. Maybe I'm more excited by beige? I''m also not opposed to games that feel like you're being strangled and hit on the head with a brick underwater, so Robinson and Arkham Horror series are one of my most beloved games. I should give HoH a try at some point. Also, you reminded me I should give The Magnificent another try, as I was not in the euro mood when I played it the first time.

The Kickstarter for this had a PnP option, which I opted for. A bit of a bigger project for a PnP that I usually do, but it turned out good. This game has a lot of decisions to make and I think of it as what I might play instead of Robinson Crusoe, which I find to be more punishing than this one. Furthermore, I think the theme for this spoke to me a lot more than most euros. An uncouth philistine such as myself just can't get into saving endangered species, medieval farming, or plotting trade routes in a third-world country. OveralI, a good game with a lot of choices to make but not as hard to navigate as most euros or wargames I have learned.
@JAlanRykerGames

Maybe it's growing up in rural Kansas, but farming is the one regular Euro theme I find engaging. Otherwise, I am totally with you. How does mushrooms become a year-long obsession in the board game industry? It's so random. Or games that just have the name of a city. Definitely happy for people who enjoy it that there's plenty of choice, but please make more with a bit more intense themes. Man, you do real pnp. I will print some cards, make some tokens, but this would be beyond me. With the way prices are headed, though, I might have to up my skills.

As a mini painter i am really happy that they did go for these awesome minis. Standees are always the worst option, especially for a game where the monster spins (is it looking in my or your direction again? I only see a thin line in the air) Spinning discs you can just print if you really want and sell the awesome minis. Not everything needs to be “you better keep up with the releases or you are out of luck” imo
@JAlanRykerGames
@JAlanRykerGames Ай бұрын
I'm also happy they made the awesome minis. I'm seeing a lot of people mistaking what I'm saying. I like standee versions. I can of course print something that spins, but I've already bought the minis. I won't be able to afford to buy the minis in the future. The argument for making it a lifestyle game with constant content is 1. a lot of people like to have regular content for their game, and that doesn't impact you as an individual if the base set fulfills your needs, and 2. that's a way to make money for the company that goes beyond the kickstarters. Them offering things for other people doesn't detract from those who choose a different offering.
@Avaniar
@Avaniar 18 күн бұрын
Saying miniatures are better than standees because with standees you don’t know where it is looking at is just ignoring Oathsworn… and here it would be sooooo easy to it has 4 sidings, obviously the thin parts are flanks and then you can both put a front and back print on the standee and just better specify it with a good base that specifies front and back. Standees give the possibility to increase market by reducing cost/price

Fantastic observations, terrible channel name. Subscribed I think I agree with 99% of your impressions, you hit all the nails and thus I am very interested in seeing how you feel about games I do not own and I'm interested in buying. The one exception in which I disagree is tracking rounds. I too used to forget until I put a little note on the aid, tracking to 10 is important for some monsters, and also the more defensive heroes with low dmg output.
@JAlanRykerGames
@JAlanRykerGames Ай бұрын
I thought about talking further about the round tracking, but knew the video would be very, very long. I think that if a person is prone to turtling, it's a good motivator. They decided instead of having large penalties when renewing the various decks, to have the round tracker to punish players who play too slowly. I appreciate that, but, I err on the side of overaggression, so don't need that prod. And I find it unfun to lose to the timer after playing for that long, so it stands as my house rule

1. I'm very slow, and 2. I think that it is possible to plan ahead somewhat during your turn, despite the dynamic nature of the game. Most co-op games play faster multiplayer for the same character count due to this.
@joshuag7027
@joshuag7027 Ай бұрын
@@JAlanRykerGames thats fair, you might be surprised how much players pre-plan then I remind them that they'll trigger a reaction, and then they have to completely rethink their strategy on the fly, I think people are used to planning out hands but because monsters react in the middle of the turn they aren't used to pivoting, they've got that marvel champions mindset then realize "ah I've got fire in my sector or crap the monster turned and now aI can't play attack cards" even with those moments where their whole strategy flies out the window, it still only takes us an hour per encounter, but I've also heard 3p is easier than playing with two characters because of the knockouts.
@JAlanRykerGames
@JAlanRykerGames Ай бұрын
@@joshuag7027 I can definitely imagine with the way this game goes that a lot of time planning off-turn is wasted, which works for me, because if I tried to plan multiple characters ahead like in, say, gloomhaven, I'd actually make myself miserable. Loving the game. I've cleared through the campaign once solo three handing. I'm looking forward to getting multiplayer games in soon. I agree with a lot of the points made here. One thing I'd emphasize is that I feel the expedition mode with recommended sets seems a really solid way to get into the game without the time in between choosing gear. I do hope they offer an alternative retail accessible version and sell the minis separately for those that want them. The game is accessible enough that it could get a lot of traction. For me, I love the minis. I consolidated all the content besides minis into the card sleeve box with all minis in the large box. Great review. The size of the game is crazy. I found using a briefcase storage with an insert to hold all the cards, tokens, boards, and books super helpful. It makes setup, upkeep, and tear down so much easier and faster. I also chose to put the minis on display which makes it easier/faster to access them as well. Trying to store the game in boxes even if you condense to the core box is impractical. I picked up MHW after getting Primal just to see how it is. The game is fun and faster than Primal without a lot less admin work to keep track of. However, Primal wins out for me for one simple reason and that is freedom. You are very limited in choice of builds for MHW. Upgraded weapons give you set cards to replace. Even the choice of weapons is limited for each type of hunter. I could see some people preferring that simplicity as it’s makes upgrading faster.

Thanks for commenting! Your videos on the Dungeon Dive are some of my favorites. I've done solo rpg only in the most gamified ways: 2D6 Dungeon, 4 Against Darkness (a lot of 4AD). Also skirmish games like 5 Leagues from the Borderlands, which gives that gamified focus of the battle. When it becomes story creation, as a novelist, I want to just write the story down. I do intend to use some solo journaling rpgs in this way in the future, like Wretched & Alone. This year I plan to play Warlord Ascendent, Forbidden Psalm (Mork Borg) and Doomed!, since those have that skirmish core. Then also Six Crowns in Hell which seems structured from the description. And Broken Shores to go more in the direction that I think you're talking about. I've been very interested in Fallen. Do you think there are any supplements that especially help gamify for solo play?

@@JAlanRykerGames Dungeon Dive is an excellent show! I just received forbidden psalm and very excited for that one. 5 Leagues is high on my try list. I feel taking something like 4AD to the next level via world adventuring would be a great sweet spot. I published free solo sheets, that basically do this, but you choose the rpg of your choice pretty much. Melv Li You Tube did a cool video gamifying Fallen! suggest googling that. Also, there is a solo zine to help. It's also very oracle heavy to facilitate solo play. Cheers - happy to have discovered your channel!

I appreciate that you put a disclaimer up front... and you can check out my playthrough from the first campaign to get more "good vibe" of the game. 🙌 You bought a fantastic game and as you already stated in the disclaimer you like it. So have fun with this fantastic game. best Chris

Thanks! Yeah, this game is amazing. I still want to play it some more before giving it my final review (I played for 2 weeks, then sat it aside to play primal the awakening), but I don't see my thoughts on it changing. It's just brilliant.

Excellent topic for a video. I always have 5 or 6 (or more!) games waiting for me to 'crack'. A mix of boardgames, RPGs and wargames. Depending on my mental acuity at the time, my decision will be influenced on what I choose to go to battle with. Some mornings I wake up with a little extra cerebral fortitude than usual and look at a specific problematic rectangle, mouthing the words: "It's on motherfucker..." 😈⚔
