@@kalorakalora I like to think that Zenyatta was the greatest dirt mare ever and Rachel Alexandra was the greatest dirt filly ever. No other filly/mare in history would have beat either at their best distances on their best days. What we saw then was truly spectacular. The more years that go by, the more I realize just how great both horses were.

@Silver Eyed Stacker I just wish they had raced, but by her 4th year she wasn't the same horse anymore. The 09 campaign just took too much out of her. If they had raced after 09 Zenyatta would have destroyed Rachel. But in 09 I have no idea who wins. So interesting that they had such opposite styles too. Does the perennial frontrunner win, or does the one who always chases down the leader with an unbelievable kick win?

You mean like the shit fields Zen faced repeatedly throughout her career? Or the fact that she has the distinction of beating ZERO Grade I winners during her alleged HOY campaign? Zen had the weakest resume of any HOY ever in history. Beating one field of males on SYNTHETIC does not make a champion...and I still can't name one true 1 1/4M dirt male she beat in 2009 in that Classic. Gio Ponti was a turfer who had just come off a loss to horse who hadn't won in 3 years! It was am 88-1 shot! SO don't start talking about weak fields because that is an invitation to destroy your argument and Zen's competition.

Rachel Alexandra's Mother Goose is *not* the only record of Ruffian's that has fallen. Since 2002 a filly named You has held the stakes record of 1:34.05 for the Acorn Stakes, previously held by Ruffian at 1:34.40 source: Wikipedia's article on the Comely and website for Ruffian" Racing's Greatest Filly Ruffian's Belmont track record of 1:03 for 5 1/2 furlongs, set in her maiden & equaled in her Fashion Stakes, was bettered in 2004 by Mike's Classic, in a time of 1:02.26 source: Equibase's page for Belmont track records, and website for Ruffian: Racing's Greatest Filly Ruffian's stakes records for the Fashion, Spinaway, Comely and Coaching Club American Oaks cannot be broken, because for varying amounts of time those races have not been contested at the distances they were run at while she was racing. The CCAO, for instance, is now run at 9 furlongs rather than the 12 furlongs Ruffian ran in 1975.

You got that right. I was running at the Fair Grounds when she shipped in and happened to be there when she got off the truck. That filly was a wreck. Very thin, didn't look sound at the walk even. Nobody ever tells the truth about any of this. When Asmussen started sending her to the track again, it was always first thing, in the dark. The official story was that she needed some down time. If that were true, why send her to the FG? The backside has little grass and only one turn-out paddock (for the stable ponies). After a six-month layup BECAUSE SHE WAS NOT SOUND NO MATTER HOW MANY TRAINING MEDS SHE ATE IN HER FEED OR HOW MANY OF HER JOINTS GOT TAPPED, she ran 2nd in the ungraded New Orleans Ladies Stakes (I watched her from the rail on the backside and thought she looked wrong, not the same action, no way... never won another G1 and only made four more starts afterwards with a two month layup between the G2 La Troienne and the ungraded Fleur de Lis where she ran 2nd and 1st. I'll never forget Asmussen bringing her off the truck at the FG for his photo ops, then handing her off to yet another amorphous Mexican who walked her around and around the barn as she dripped sweat (it wasn't hot), totally washed out and as unhappy a filly as I've ever seen. A filly with such talent and such heart, run into the ground as a 4YO with only 19 lifetime starts... and for what? A sound, honest filly full of try... destroyed, and for what? Her ankles looked BAD on the rare occasions she stepped out of her stall at the FG without wraps on. Gonna stop now. I know too much, ran against Asmussen's B Team too many times to remember. The things that went on in his barns down here, nobody would believe me, and it makes everything on the PETA video look pale by comparison (not a bit of which, may I add, presented a distorted view of how most barns operate). Why bother? If I told what I know, I'd get attacked (yet again) and accused of being a member of PETA (as if racehorse owners and lifelong H/J competitors/trainers were PETA material). Tant pis, trop tard (Calvin would understand what I just said).

I'm just surprised everyone forgot about Asmussen and the PETA video. How could you ever vote a trainer like that into the hall of fame? How could you treat a great horse like Nehro like that? It disgusts me and I am further bothered that he got voted in. Scott Blasi was fired only to be rehired a few months later. Those guys are terrible trainers and should have been banned from sport.
