My GR iii is battered now - the front lens cover has broken off, there's dust on the sensor and the control wheel doesn't work properly. I did have the GR iii x for about a week too but sent it back, and I still wonder whether I should have kept it or not. This new HDF thing really does seem too gimmicky for me - but I'm also resisting buying a replacement GRiii / GRiii x because it's been around for so long -- and I wouldn't be happy to buy a camera, only for a new GR iv to suddenly make an appearance.

How many images has your GRIII taken so far? My LCD is showing some strange violet color on the pixels on the left edge, so maybe my screen is about to fail. I am on <4000 images, my GRIII is old in years but still young for shutter actuations. If my GRIII failed I would replace it without hesitation but I might look at the GRIIIX to replace it, I would never intentionally own both but if my GRIII failed I would try the GRIIIX to have something different. I am sure a GRIV is in the plan but I cannot think of what they would bring to a Gen 4 that would be compelling. I dont want better video recording, I dont want a Zoom or a flash, so all they could do would be offer a faster lens or an improved sensor. I am happy with the current lens and sensor so I do not think that would be compelling.

@@ThisIsJulianC It's actually under 10,000 and I've had it for about three years! I had one of those stick-on filters to protect the lens, but it cracked somehow, and when I tried to remove it, I pulled off the entire front of the lens cover. That made way for dust to enter, but I never pursued a proper repair (was skint at the time, or more accurately, resented the thought of spending money that I wanted to spend elsewhere). The control wheel is just temperamental, like it doesn't always do anything when I spin it - but I also think that's due to dust getting into it. Basically, if I replace it (with an 'x'), I'll need to be more careful, probably wrap it with plastic film, keep it in a case and just be a hell of a lot more careful if I put another glass filter on it. The image quality, however, is still superb and my LCD fine - I just need to 'spot' any dust marks when shooting at low aperture.

"Legacy equipment"??? EVFs will never be as good as an optical viewfinder. A mirrorless camera isn't inherently better, just different - that is, unless a manufacturer deliberately refuses to update the features and/or sensors in their DSLR range.

Nikon and Canon have ceased the development of new DSLR models. The EF lenses (and DSLR bodies) continue to be as outstanding today as they were before the market for mirrorless cameras outgrew them. They will still be around for plenty of time yet no need to worry.

I date way back to the Mi Sphere. I have been using Qoocam 8k for several years, but the batteries go bad and you can't buy replacements. Same for lenses. I have been waiting for the new Qoocam, but it never came out. Apparently Insta360 finally got rid of the 15 second gap every half hour when recording with an external battery, so I guess I will have to go back to Insta360. My old Qoocam battery is slowly pushing the back off the camera. I could never go back to 5.7k.

The A7C is just in a weird spot for me. Especially with that grip extender thing, it’s basically the same height as the A7 series weighs barely 100g less, and doesn’t have the nice deep grip, joystick, custom buttons, better shutter, better EVF, etc. great camera nonetheless, but it’s not really that small in real life when you use them side by side.
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC 8 күн бұрын
The grip extender makes sense if you are using larger zoom lenses, otherwise it is an unnecessary addition. I find my A7CR much smaller, lighter and more discrete than my A7Riv so long as I am using smaller prime lenses. If I put a GM zoom lens on it however the benefits of the smaller A7CR are completely negated.

No they can’t without the passcode. When you remove it from your wrist the HR sensor detects it has been removed, it will then need your passcode to be able to use Garmin Pay again. @ThisIsJulianC 8 күн бұрын
If you are looking to capture people's driving and to use that for education, I would probably look at a GoPro or other action camera instead of a dash cam. You will get much better image quality than any dash cam available today. You could then have a dashcam recording when you are driving, and use clips from that to demonstrate the points you are teaching, assuming that the driving behavior around you is demonstrating what you want it to. Hope this helps

@@ThisIsJulianC and on a Honda Jazz (Honda Fit in the USA) , the highly angled windscreen makes the 180 degree view a bit pointless ! It captures lots of dashboard and the central Honda camera section behind the rear view driving mirror. It might be good on the back window, because that's vertical. Trust me , I've just tried a 67W . I might keep it, and use it on the back window, but I'm currently thinking a 140 deg angle is better for the front wind screen, with as I said , one in each corner !

The best way to use the GRIII, and the other GR models for that matter, is that you don' take anything else with you. Maybe a couple of spare batteries but that's it. That's liberating when you're used to carrying around a system camera. I think that's the main reason it's so popular. I don't even want to decide what filter to use. In use, it is as close as you can get to invisible. I'm used to covering up the white lettering on my cameras with gaffers tape, because I hate the noisy branding. You never have to do that with a GR.

Yeah, I picked up the A7C II at my local photo shop. I have the original A7C, which is perfectly fine even if based on an older sensor and without the new features. Considering the resell market, I may just keep it and return the A7C II and get the A7CR instead. I was leaning towards getting the A7RV but the price was just too much to really justify, plus I love the travel/compact design. I wish I could just have both, but just is a bit much considering everything else going on in life.

@@ThisIsJulianC Yeah, I ended up returning the A7C II and just getting the A7R V instead. Sony had/has a $400 off sale on that body - so it was "only" $500 more. I was planning to sell my A7C too but the resell market is not great (1/4th the original cost). Keeping it for a video camera too. I may go back and get the A7C II in a few months for a travel camera since it is a better well rounded hybrid camera.

Aren't you also a fan of classic mechanical cameras? I am wondering about the "feel" of this camera. What does it feel like in use, compared to e.g. a Leica Q? Does it feel more like a Sony Playstation console than a precision instrument?
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC 8 күн бұрын
I am an avid collector of classic cameras, mainly 35mm SLR's from the 1960s - 1990's. There are some medium format in there too, and some 127 half frame :-) but most are 35mm. I appreciate the complexity of the mechanical cameras, how they transfer a shutter release to the closing of an aperture ring, the release of a shutter etc. Very few other mechanical devices compare. IMO you cannot compare any current digital camera to the mechanical film cameras of that era. The experience is completely different. The A7CR to me feels like a perfect digital camera for what I use it for - travel photography. If I had the choice of the Leica Q3 or the A7CR I would still choose the Sony, because I am familiar with the way that the Alpha cameras operate. The tilt screen and the viewfinder of the Leica would be attractive but for me, thats all.

If I could only buy 2 lenses for travel, I think one you would recommend is the landscape 16-35mm. What would be your other lens for stills, people? thanks
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC 13 күн бұрын
If it was two lenses only, I would take a mid range zoom and a fast prime. In that case I would take a 24-70 2.8 GM, use that for landscapes and people. The prime would be a tough choice between the 40mm 2.5 or the 20mm 1.8, either of which are great for for general walking around. I do like the 16-35mm a lot but generally I am only using it for landscapes (and filming YT videos when not traveling). So If it is the only zoom I am taking it would be too limiting in what I would use it for. With the 24-70mm I do give up on the wide end of the zoom but I do get a great portrait lens with it in addition to still being a great landscape lens. Hope this helps

I'm gonna buy one and here's why: I just want a new GR III. My current one I've had for a while and I don't know when it'll die, and they're becoming harder to come by (Adorama has a few at the time of this writing, B&H is out of stock). So I'm gonna buy the HDF not because I care about the new filter on it, I just want to have a GR III for as long as possible. One day these cameras will be gone and let's not kid ourselves--a GR IV isn't coming any time soon, if ever.
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC 14 күн бұрын
If you have the current firmware you can see how many images your GRIII has taken since new, that will be a good guide to age in terms of component wear (shutter) rather than years. I gave some thought to your idea, it makes a lot of sense if you are a frequent GRIII photographer. I use the ND more than any other filter, but if I was going to buy a second GRIII like you, I'd look at the GRIIIX HDF. Then I get the 40mm FF focal length and the HDF filter too. I would be more likely to use a HDF filter in a street environment which is also where 40mm comes in to its own.

I saw on Samuel Streetlife's video that attaching a lens filter above Ricoh GRIII's lens would attract additional reflections - not ideal. When and what situations do you use the ND filter?
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC 16 күн бұрын
I use the ND for wide aperture bright scenes and water images when hiking. Any filter attached outside a lens and not directly attached to it will have some reflection/flare risk, so it is always a compromise. In my case I use an ND filter more than a diffusion filter.
