@@kylestrasbourg4885 certainly a interesting idea and I’ve actually thought of the concept before. I once basically speculated what Amtrak and Conrail would have looked like if they had been around during the steam age and early diesel era. Assuming both organizations started relatively early in the Great Depression say for example, in 1933 due to the new deal then I made the assumption that Conrail probably would have been consisted of railroads like the New Haven, Reading, Central of New Jersey, Ann Arbor, Lehigh Valley, and the Pennsylvania Railroad while the Delaware Lackawanna and western, the New York Central and the Erie railroads might have done better, or at least have done well enough to avoid being taken over. As for Amtrak, I assumed that it would take over most, but not all of the nationwide passenger services leading Amtrak to coexist with New York Central, union pacific, Chicago Burlington and Quincy, the southern pacific, the Santa Fe, Norfolk and western, the southern railway, the Rock Island railroad, the great northern railroad, and the Baltimore and Ohio railroad in terms of passenger services. Probably Amtrak in its first year or so of operation would have pretty much been passenger locomotives taken from railroads that no longer would have operated passenger services in this scenario, such as the Delaware and Hudson, the Pennsylvania railroad and the Milwaukee Road with the possible temporary usage of freight engines as well for these duties. Conrail probably would have utilized stuff like the Reading T1 and stuff like that for their locomotives. Amtrak probably would have wanted to show a modern face to the nation, particularly since the era of streamlined and art deco locomotives would have been beginning at about this point, so my guesses are that, some of its first new engines would’ve been stuff like GG1 electric locomotives and streamliners similar to the Pennsylvania torpedo and the Milwaukee Rd., Hiawatha. Amtrak would definitely embrace diesel locomotives relatively early on and I can imagine that they would be doing so alongside the Chicago Burlington, and Quincy, the Boston and Maine and the Baltimore and Ohio as well as Union Pacific and Santa Fe to be one of the first users of diesel streamliners. I could imagine that they would have started using them probably right before the war. Amtrak if it existed in the 1930s 40s and 50s might have had some similarities to British railways or BR in its early days when it was trying to standardize steam and diesel locomotives on its lines. During World War II, I could imagine a lot of dual use locomotives or mixed traffic engines being rather common, and I could imagine Reading T1 style locomotives, being used jointly by Amtrak and Conrail. In this scenario, Amtrak probably would have ended the use of steam at some point in the early to mid 50s. Conrail might have ended a little later. What do you think about that theory of mine?
