Karate practicioner here, let me elaborate So competitive kumite(sparring) is very different than normal kumite Usually in kumite the point is to execute techniques correctly on your opponent and deal as many strikes as possible while not making errors and defending yourself But in cases like here where the kumite is competitive, the focus goes off from something like an mma match and starts becoming more like fencing. Where they take their time before deciding to try and strike as to try and make sure they can guarantee a point with the strike.But ofcourse experienced fighers like these are probably capable of dealing much more powerful hits and participating in a more active match, but to them in sport kumite this is the most ideal so they can win. So dont think of this as the deafult sparring of karate, not at all. The sparring matches are usually quick paced and there isnt more than 5 seconds left without a strike being dealed(Atleast in the dojo i go to). But i have to admit as much as this sparring style is justified, it is quite boring to watch so as a person who does karate myself i'd prefer if competitive sparring matches like thse were less focused on perfection and scoring as much points as possible.And the yells are very obnoxious i genuinely can't find a reason for why they do that, and it's literally NEVER done in sparring matches usually, Also if you're wondering why they are hopping around, its because it helps them gain more momentum before dealing any strike. and the reason they can do this for the entire match is because kumite matches unlike mma are very short so you can do it without getting too exhausted by the end. but other than some points this sparring is still very impressive and it is more focused on defence than offense, so if you put these guys in an mma match while they may not guarantee winning everytime obviously, it would be very hard for their opponent to find an opening since these guy's have absolutely inane reflexes.So just because these matches are less endurance based and more based on accuracy and reflexes, doesnt mean theyre not to be taken seriously.(Although as a person who does karate myself i prefer more contact-heavy matches)
