Nice. I got a Jaw horse of Marketplace several years ago. I’ve used it for some cutting but haven’t used it for splitting slabs. I thinks to better grip the offset log I’d add some sandpaper to the jaws. Hope you show the hollow form, unless too wet to turn at this time.

I’ve tried many different finished. 90% of my bowls I do with 2 coats of Tung oil finish. Let completely dry then buff on the lathe. Love the finish takes longer but last long. Tung oil finish is tung oil diluted 25% with minerals spirits. I also tried pure tung oil takes way too long to dry. My go to is tung oil finish. Have also used walnut oil, just paste wax, Yorkshire grit $$, Boiled linseed-denatured alcohol-clear shellac friction polish. Didn’t like the finish. I now buy 100% tung oil then mix it with 25% mineral spirits. Cheaper that way.

So true I’d say no the next time. Today I cut up 25 black walnut chunks into 50 halves will make over 70 bowls out of it. Makes a whole lot of sense to work with good wood. But Scott will end up with this bowl.

Do you have to let the wood dry out first before you use it?Or can you use it right away?
@bowlreveal
@bowlreveal 4 ай бұрын
Good question. I almost always 1st turn my wood extra thick and let it dry below 10% then finish turn. Keeps the wood from cracking. At least most of the time. I have also finished turned wood that was very wet and let it warp and then sand it when it dries out different result. Just lots of fun! I do about 175 bowls a year and don’t sell them I give them away, some end up at the Hamburger Fair for Make A Wish Foundation.

Black locust has a distinct ammonia smell when cut fresh. Actually never seen burls on black locust And the shavings would be greenish/brown and very hard to cut. However, I am interested in making blanks (not turning myself yet) but I have a abundance of burls on my property and would like to find the best way to section them up for sale. Lots of cherry, birch and box elder among other species. What would you recommend as a turner buying blanks??
@bowlreveal
@bowlreveal 5 ай бұрын
I’ve never had to buy any wood for turning and I’ve never sold any. But the larger the burl the better so once you cut the main burl do not cut again let the turner decide how they want to cut up. That tree was an Osage orange tree with the 51 burls. Good Luck!
