At 1:47, there are a lot of urban myths associated with Executive Order 9066, which did not name any race or group for the temporary relocation out of the West Coast Defense Zone. You have to get the whole story from original WWII source material: WWII Japanese Relocation Camps & the WRA: A Prudent, Emergency, War-time Measure.

@@frenzalrhomb6919 Wrong. The alien Germans and Italians within that defense zone were also investigated, interned (by the DOJ, not the WRA) or executed. This is why you need to learn the truth from original sources. The order gave General DeWitt the authority to remove ANYBODY. There were over 40,000 Japanese aliens there.

How _very_ refreshing to view a video in which someone actually has the story right! If there was one detail (O.K., _two;..._ John North Willys pronounced his name _Will-iss._ ) that I would adjust, it would be that Ford was not so much 'asked' to participate in the project that became _Truck, 1/4 Ton. 4X4, G503._ It is my understanding that Ordnance applied considerable pressure to Ford Motor Company 'informing' them that they would provide a prototype and prepare for production as there was concern about Bantam's and / or Willys Overland's ability to provide for projected demand. For any who do not know; Ford's _GP_ designation did _not_ indicate 'general purpose' or anything of the sort (as is somewhat commonly assumed). Per period FoMoCo documents, G was 'government', P was Ford's internal code for vehicles of 80 inch wheelbase. Vehicles built by Ford as subcontractor to Willys' G503 contract were GPW, or government, 80", Willys pattern. Addendum: 07:27 - Both Bantam and Willys 'built' 1/4 ton trailers of the same pattern during WW2, the Bantam T-3 and Willys MB-T. Both firms assembled their trailers from components provided by American Central Manufacturing (ACM), a firm which also produced 'body tubs' for both Willys MB and Ford GPW. ACM had previously built bodies for the Cord 810 and several other automobiles. The T-3 and MB-T were watertight and could be used as boats or even as pontoon bridges if required. 08:30 - Kudos for including the 'Rotarbuggy', an autogyro 'Flying Jeep' of sorts (gliding, actually). The rotor was not powered, it provided lift when towed by an aircraft. 08:36 - Kit, Deep Fording. 08:40 - _"Successful?"_ They were called 'Seep' for a reason. The VW Schwimmwagen was a true amphibian. Your 'name of Jeep origin story' _is_ accurate, though I would add that the first published reference to a prototype of what would become G503 being referred to as "Jeep" was the result of Katherine Hillyer, a magazine photographer, having been sent to a public relations stunt wherein a Willys 1/4 ton 4X4 prototype was being driven up the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Hillyard called out to W/O test driver Red Hausmann, "What is that thing?" "It's a Jeep!" he replied. On February 20, 1941, her readers were greeted with the photo of a Willys quad climbing the steps with the caption; _Lawmakers take a ride - With Senator Meade, of New York, at the wheel, and Representative Thomas, of New Jersey, sitting beside him, one of the Army’s new scout cars, known as “jeeps” or “quads”, climbs up the Capitol steps in a demonstration yesterday. Soldiers in the rear seat for gunners were unperturbed._ It does seem that I've 'picked at' your video more than I had intended, but it's all for the right reasons. Please do understand that my recently restored 'late war standard' Willys MB appreciates your accurate and well researched presentation.

As you can see in the photos Ford is the company that designed the grill with headlights in it the army had Willis built it that way
@-oiiio-3993
@-oiiio-3993 2 ай бұрын
Correct. That occurred not long after Ford was enjoined (pushed) to produce their Model GPW (government, 80" wheelbase, Willys pattern) as subcontractor to Willys Overland's G503 contract. The approved G503 design had a 'slat grill' of welded strap iron as commonly used on larger military trucks. Ford engineers quickly saw that producing such grilles was a slow and cumbersome process which also added weight to the vehicle as opposed to a stamped steel version. The true genius of the (nine slot) Ford grille was that it incorporated hinged headlights that could be used as spotlights or under hood work lights. Ford requested permission to make the change, Ordnance gave the O.K. and stipulated that all future G503 would have the new grille. It was an improvement on several levels. The postwar redesign to a seven slot grille was done by Willys Overland and trademarked along with the 'Jeep' name.

No, it did not. Ford Motor Company documents of the time clearly indicate that 'GP' designated 'government, 80" wheelbase,' as P was Ford internal code for vehicles of 80" w/b. Vehicles built by Ford as subcontractor to the Willys Overland contract for 'Truck, 1/4 Ton, 4X4, G503' were designated GPW, or government, 80" w/b, Willys pattern.

@@leemurrah278 There are several theories for the 'Jeep' name origin. One that is easily disproved is the notion that 'GP' designated 'general purpose' and hence became the name. Per period Ford Motor Company documents, Ford's designation of GP was 'government, 80 inch wheelbase' as P was 'Fordspeak' for 80" w/b. Some early WW2 GIs may have read GP on the dash plates of Ford 1/4 ton 4X4 vehicles and shortened it to 'Jeep', but those would only have been from the first Ford contract for 10,000 some 'pre standard' models that were tested, evaluated, and mostly sent off to Lend Lease partners as soon as the standard G503 (Willys MB, Ford GPW) vehicles became available for use by U.S. forces. There were as many Willys MA (military, first contract) and more Bantam BRC (Bantam reconnaissance car) models produced before the G503 contract was awarded to W/O, so why not "Maw" or "Burc"? Most WW2 GIs would never have seen an actual GP, though they may have been very well acquainted with the Ford built G503 (Ford as subcontractor to Willys), designated by Ford as GPW (government, 80", Willys Pattern). Would GPW make one say, "Jeep"? Ford built over 280,000 GPW to Willys' 360,000 some MB models. Why not Mmmb? There were larger, Dodge built, vehicles identified in Ordnance publications as 'Jeep" before the bid had been issued for a 1/4 ton 4X4 truck. George S. Patton _always_ referred to the Dodge vehicles as 'Jeep' and to the 1/4 ton Bantam, Ford, and / or Willys vehicles as 'Peeps', as verified in his own autobiography.

GP did not designate 'general purpose'. Only the 'pre standard' vehicles built by Ford were designated GP, which was (per period Ford Motor Company documents) indicative of 'government, 80 inch wheelbase' as P was Ford internal code for vehicles of 80" w/b. Some GIs of 1941 (and fewer afterward) may have seen 'GP' on a vehicle's dash plate and spoke it as 'Geep', but there were as many 'pre standard' Willys MA (military, first contract) and more Bantam BRC (Bantam reconnaissance car) vehicles produced, so why not 'Maw' or 'Brrc'? As soon as 'standard' G503 contract (Willys MB, Ford GPW) vehicles became available, 'non standard' vehicles such as Bantam BRC, Ford GP, Willys MA, were shipped overseas to Lend Lease partners, so the vast majority of WW2 GIs never laid eyes on an actual GP. After the G503 contract was awarded to Willys Overland, they went on to produce over 360,000 of their Model MB (military, second contract) vehicles to Ford's 280,000 some of their Model GPW (government, 80" w/b, Willys pattern). Does GPW make one say, 'Jeep'? Why not 'Emmbee'? Bottom line: GP did not designate "general purpose" and Ordnance never identified the G503 as such. It was, to them, "Truck, 1/4 Ton, 4X4, G503'. To GIs and to folks on the home front, it was 'Jeep'; origins obscure. By the way, have you ever heard the horn of one? _'Jeep!... Jeep!'_

Great history lesson. My research on this topic, the government basically passed the Bantan's blueprints onto Ford and Willis...saying there was a war time need. @@leemurrah278 Bantam was not a subsidiary, they were successor to American Austin who had reorganized as American Bantam in 1936. The Austin Seven models were essentially scaled down versions of Ford products. Incorporated in 1929, American Austin was a U.S. concern which had built a U.S. version of the Austin Seven _under contract_ from Austin Motor Company, a British firm, from 1930 through 1934 when American Austin filed for Bankruptcy. Evans Operations acquired American Austin's assets at a 1935 liquidation and reorganized as American Bantam Car Company, incorporated 1936.

Gen Cardenas spoke highly of this plane. He remarked at it's handling, and in fact he also spoke of a time he got it to "depart" and got it in a flat spin. He eventually got it into an INVERTED flat spin, that he could actually get out of, and was able to recover before losing the aircraft. He was SUCH a great pilot, contemporary of Bob Hoover, Yaeger, and that entire generation of heroic and competent aviators.

Going back to the Dolittle Raid, when you say (as most do) that it had little strategic value - there is a school of thought which claims that in the well known rivalry between the japanese army and navy the raid alarmed the nation enough that the navy got the upper hand and so initiated the Midway attack (believing the aircraft came from there). And we all know what that led to!

The early British Mustangs were not all that great as the Allison engine was useless at higher altitudes, so they were religated to ground attack and low level reconnaissance. But when the Rolls Royce Merlin engine was installed to the Mustang, it boosted the top speed by over 50 mph and gave it great high altitude performance. It enterd service as the Mustang MkIII with the RAF and P-51B with the USAAF.

HMS Prince of Wales three hits on Bismarck damaged Bismarck to such an extent that the Bismarck's mission had to be abandoned. The damage caused by HMS Prince of Wales also slowed Bismarck down. HMS Prince of Wales had to disengage due to gun system malfunctions. The gunnery systems were still being completed as she was a brand new ship and still had the shipyard workers onboard. The Swordfish attack by HMS Ark Royal did not prevent Bismarck from attempting to return to a French Port. It REDUCED Bismarck's speed still further and and her ability to steer. During the final battle Bismarck was manoeuvring as can be seen from the battle plot. HMS Rodney's excellent gunnery hit Bismarck with the second salvo and that was the end of it for Bismarck.

a few points the Deutschland class were ordered by the Weimar Republic long before Hitler came to power the UK didn't force Germany to agree to the UK / German naval treaty Germany gladly adopted it as it gave them 35% of the RN,s tonnage and this agreement upset the French. the French fast battleship Richelieu was designed to take on the Italian navy that was to French navy's job the Royal Navy had 4 R class battleships equipped with 8 15in gun,s , 4 QE class battleships fitted with 8 15in each , 2 repulse class Battlecruisers fitted with 6 15in guns each , Hood the original fast Battleship fitted with 8 15in guns, the under construction KGV,s fitted with 19 14in guns and finally the 2 Nelrod,s each fitted with 9 16in guns. for the German navy to attempt to take on the French then they would have to pass the UK either past the North of Scotland or through the Channel. The UK and France were allied to each other do you think for one moment that the UK who operated the largest navy in the world with 140 destroyers 50 cruisers 7 carriers and the afore mentioned battle wagons would allow Germany to sally down the channel or that a UK government wouldn't agree to support France. I am not a historian but i know more than you so please do some research its very easy to do read a book there are plenty of them about the subject. Also the Bismark was not scuttled it was sunk by the RN after it had been battered to pieces by the main armament of the KGV and Rodney for a hr and was finally sunk by 21in torpedo,s from the county class heavy cruiser Dorsetshire .
