That glow was his perception skill going off. The blade was stupid dull and damaged by the time he fought that basilisk so using strength to squeeze it's neck was the only thing he can do.

Pull on the "Nael Descent of Heroes" Banner. There is a chance you can get "Spirit Maiden Theria". She's the best healer that will carry you through the game. You can re-roll your account over and over again if you're into that too.
