cup winners cup was basically the europa league of today I think. back then the uefa cup was stronger than the European cup in some seasons, because in the European cup you might have teams that peaked in the last season, and in the uefa cup you had up and coming teams that were peaking. People really don't understand the the uefa cup back then was prestigious if not more than the European cup.

As the name said, it was the European Cup of the national Cup Winners. There were three European Cups back then. First the Cup of the National Champions, then the Cup of the National Cup Winners, and third the UEFA Cup, which is called Euroleague nowadays.
