I really appreciate this video. I highly doubt Everglow-up will ever watch it since she literally responded to the backlash she received by being silent and saying that she actually believes what she said in that (now private/deleted) KZfaq short but maybe some of her youngest subscribers will learn a thing or two about fandom activism and will not immediately downplay or make fun of other fans when they talk about social issues in K-Pop. It's sad that Tumblr slowly disappeared in the fandom discourse after the 18+ contents purge but I think the site is still relevant somehow. The fact that Twitter users keep stealing GIFs from Tumblr and repost them kinda proves my point. Also, good luck with the Blackpink Olympics debunk/deep dive. Considering that Cheryl made more videos about the group and fandom even after this series's ending, you have a huge amount of work in the doing 😅

That is just partially related to the video but i really want to say that. As a person who has been (pretty much unwillingly) living in a country where "what can we do, anyway? we can change nothing" mentality is just a motto of the whole nation, seeing people outside doing the same thing is just heartbreaking. Like, i don't know. I really start feel powerless the more i hear i am powerless. And, honestly, that is more tiring than just doing something to change the situation. So, seeing people actually uniting for something at least for once brings some weird sense of comfort to me. I am so happy people like this actually exist.

But anyways, I enjoyed your perspective. We are halfway in chapter 2, and I can safely say that no, they haven’t sold out. From what I’ve seen solo projects have displayed their own personal colors whether sang in English or Korean. I do believe time will solve all of this. The pandemic made us hyper-focus on the English singles, but once they’re back from the military, I have 100% trust that their albums will be of high quality (based on the quality of their solo albums).

Sorry for the late comment, just found your channel! I understand your points on why the parasocial relationship ARMY has with BTS played a role in this, but I think in this particular situation, the Tae and Jennie one, from what I witnessed especially on twt, shipping culture played such a big role to escalate this into the complete shitshow it became. It got to a point that she was getting what we called the Jimin treatment from them, daily slutshaming, dehumanizing, SA and de@th threats on her IG, it even ended up on the news. They've spent so long unaccountable for their vile actions that they've evolved into something ARMY can't control anymore, and it's playing a big part in fracturing the fandom 😢

The no bra "issue" was mostly other women criticizing her. But at the end of the day I agree the most with Heechul when he said making this a gender war is pointless. Especially 4 years later. Sure the way we remember them is wrong but I don't feel like this video really helps.

Couldn’t agree more with this particular sentiment Jonghyun Sulli and Goo Hara were incredibly talented Artists with distinct unique talents and personalities they should be remembered for their achievements during their careers not for how they died what’s so frustrating is the fans and especially the media seems to forget that.

a long response, sorry! yess for mentioning tumblr. it was really shocking for me when i moved from kpop tumblr to kpop twitter bc i suddenly saw so much bigotry like ableism and transphobia and racism to degrees and amounts i have never seen before on tumblr. a lot of social issue 'discourse' that's treated like new ideas on twt or tiktok or taboo to discuss were already commonly known or discussed on there years ago. then again i guess that all happened in a bubble. (edit: tumblr is far from perfect ofc, didn't want to only praise it as it had/has issues too) i think a large issue and change over the years is also how international k-pop fandoms nowadays have more presence of + are catered to rich people who treat their hobby like an investment and something to brag about, caring more about social hierarchy even within fandom. this probably due to k-pop albums and official music platform releases being much more accessible + streaming culture dominating whereas ill*gally downloading music is forgotten about. either way, this wealth and different way of engaging with k-pop, to the degree that these people treat consumption of unnecessary goods as a human right, rather than idk, life-saving resources for people, i think is part of why they are so strongly against boycotts. this paired with the gullibility of way too fans who can't think outside of fandom ideas.... not to mention just plain and simple xenophobia, with people not trusting anything Palestinian people say or do. i've been really disheartened by how fellow ARMY have acted. OneInAnARMY already shown itself to be useless and showed a lot of distrust in Gaza-based charities. and on top of that, both ARMY and solo stans are nowadays mass-reporting Palestinian ARMY and even trying to get charities like Care For Gaza svspended. it's so, so depraved. i'm not shocked about the degree of apathy of many people and all the misinformation, considering the same is happening for years still with the ongoing mass-disabling pandemic (even had the second-worst wave in the US and Europe this winter) that's being ignored and collective social issues are trivialized bc we're all meant to act individualistic and not think about our actions harming others in society. i've seen similar horrid behaviour towards Palestinian fans happen towards other indigenous communities within fandom before. people are supposedly all for activism in the name of a fandom, until it pertains a marginalized community who criticizes e.g. HYBE or a collaborative artist. and then for people to dare call Palestinians "performative". of all people?? so i'm not surprised by the inaction of governments, lies of media, the unhinged and bigoted behaviour in our fandom communities, but MAN is it disappointing.

I never liked KPop. I felt like it was overhyped and just had a bunch of nonstop in your face music that sounded repetitive. There has been a few songs that I liked but I would never considered myself a fan. Up until November of last year, I heard ETA and I was hooked. I got obsessed with the song, the jersey club inspired beat seeing as I’m from the east side of America. Then I started getting curious about the rest of their music since I am a producer. I ended up falling in love with all of their songs. What’s crazy is that I remember hearing Super Shy and absolutely hating it, but after getting to listen to the other songs and getting obsessed with the members, it grew on me. NewJeans is the group that has officially gotten me into KPop and currently are my favorite group. I haven’t liked a girl group since Fifth Harmony so this means a lot to me

Don’t be shy, talk about the members being exploited by 44 year old. They are minors but have songs like “cookie”💀containing sexual lyrics which y’all are glamorising as YOUTHFUL. They were all teenagers and youngest being 14 year old at debut their debut song sounded INNOCENT but has super weird lyrics about wanting attention which is very uncomfortable and weird for a minor to be singing and one of danielle teaser poster was inspired by a ped0philia movie and please google what ped0philia means. Their song eta is super problematic and it refers to a very problematic spainish organisation terrorist group which was denied by hybe but the fact they still did the shooting in spain (where the terrorist group ETA is formed)and used the car attack made by the era organisation in spain as aesthetic for their teaser. Used mental patient as aesthetic for their music video. No hate to members y’all should stop glamorising their songs as “YOUTH” “NEW” and “BETTER” because that’s disgusting. I agree girls are talented but the songs and the dark meaning behind it i’m sorry that’s a no.

the only thing youre right about is cookie. other than that youre sexualising the song (attention) and youre the gross person here. eta thing was a dumb stan twitter thing even basque people called you out for your stupidity and that "terrorist organization" was an anti-fascist organization at least do the research right, mv director said he picked up the names from arsenal. you read something from twitter and youre projecting to us. if you really cared about minors in the industry you wouldnt even listen to kpop in the first place. stop your hypocrisy

The thing I love about New Jeans is that everything about them from their songs to their music videos to their concept to even their own visuals and personalities, is youthful, fun and pretty. Their simplicity is refreshing especially in an era where experimental sounds and concepts seem to be common. Someone mentioned that even in their debut, none of the members died their hair or had any crazy, funky hairstyles. Again this adds to how refreshing and natural they are. They are true to themselves. You can even feel it in their music. Their music has their name written all over it. It feels like their songs, their creation. With other groups it just feels like they were given a song to perform and they completed the task. New Jeans' music feels like the girls were actually hands on and involved in the song-making process and the fact that 4/5 members are songwriters for their songs just makes it better. You can even tell from the way they love and talk about their music, that is their baby. So even their music feels true to them. When Hype Boy came out with multiple music videos, I was thinking these girls really do not care about views and THAT is the thing about them. Nothing feels forced, nothing feels performative. They are what they seem, a group of young girls just having fun, enjoying life and making great music. The girls are funny and talented and get along so well so the secret is just be AUTHENTIC, be true to yourself in every way and make music that is enjoyable.

Hi nhi's space, I really love your editing style and your strong personality ~ ~ ! Tbh, K-Pop fans scare me. Even though I like and love K-Pop, the fans traumatize me. Ofc, not all are bad but the ones that are bad deserve a trophy. I actually used to know a few people whose parents all worked in the K-Pop industry. They were not bad people, actually one of them was obsessed with Momo and that's why I stopped being friends with him. We were supposed to go to KCON together that summer with those backstage passes but I could not be his friend anymore. When I told him how I felt about him being obsessed with her, he said he was not. So, this freaked me out. He is not a bad person at all just a bit delusional. As for people who are obsessed with another person, please if you are obsessed over someone to the point you feel like if you can't search them up every hour this is unhealthy. I think you don't necessarily have to stalk them to be a sasaeng. I think if you try to find out things about them online, it can be just as bad. Like, I remember this girl found Vernon's sister's IG and asked her if Vernon could be her's. And she said that whomever her brother dates is up to him. My old friend who was a trainee said that all K-Pop Stars date. If they are not dating, it does not mean you will ever have a chance with them. It just means they aren't dating atm but will when the time is right. I also always say to people that if you ever meet or work with a celebrity. You can not go to them and try to be their friend. They have to go up to you and want to be your friend, in order for you to even have a chance at friendship with them. I am also Korean American : - ) and I know in Korea for instance like you know the airports, these people have no chill. Like, no matter how much they like their faves they always just want to follow them everywhere. Like, trying to be Y/N in a fanfic. I also always tell people that it is always best if they chase you, wanting to get to know you and be your friend or more. If you chase them, you will end up in jail.

A story I know is one that I’m sure a lot of others know. And it’s with Nayeon from twice. There’s a saesang who’s one of the rich ones and literally would harass her mother and even took pictures in front of her apartment and Nayeons apartment. He would literally find out so many things about her and say HOW he’s going to find her. He would literally make public videos about it too. I believe either South Korea banned him or that people were trying to get him banned from South Korea so that he could leave her alone. I don’t know what happened after the first time I heard about it. I may have misremembered something too

What Ive noticed is the reverse dichotomy of babying kpop idols and considering anything they do as great, whilst denigrating their western counterparts and downplaying their talent and popularity. The double standard in terms of talent and standard of music and telling some pop stars that they are lucky to have partnered w/ a kpop idol, even though the gp knows the pop star more is just so delusional.

I want to open debate about something...kpop covers When male idols cover female idols I feel no one really bat an eye about it, they even get praised When female idol cover male idols I always see general comments like "yeah but they will never beat my idol", "they didnt do it well", or even passive aggresive comments like "X idol songs are unique none other can cover", in short, they get critiziced more... What do you think might be the reason behind this? Are they really doing it bad or jealousy and envy are attacking once again?

This is a great take. Enjoyed it and the commentary. I love the 90s rnb/hip beats nostalgia without being stuck to it in terms of the theme. That's for me what separates them from blackpink (note: i love BP) ... but BP heavily were big and use almost verbatim hip hop lines, beats and the new bass heavy sound for what's good in a club - so it doesn't feel personally, them. We'll see when they split if the sound is the same. This is not taking away from them, but to me NJ just like the name seem fresh and familiar at the same time. Very unique. And Cookie was only controversial to speakers of english slang.
