@@spruehunter what airbrush type do you use as i am in the market for one for both my 1/48 scale lancs
@spruehunter4 күн бұрын
I used a Harder & Steinbeck Evolution CR Plus 0.2 for the Lancaster, but I also have a Mr Hobby Procon Boy 0.2 and it's a great airbrush for the money with an adjustable Mac valve and lockable trigger comes in handy. Prices for H&S just keep going up but the Mr Hobby Procon I managed to pick up off Amazon for less than £100. I also hear good things about Fengda 180k brushes which a few folk have and at around £20 you can't really go wrong. The key I find with airbrushes is to not strip and clean them all the time, just blow them through with lacquer thinner and only clean when needed, my H&S needs more than the Mr Hobby but is fairly easy to disassemble. Mr Hobby I've never stripped but still no issues. Hope that helps! 👍

Hi Tim, thanks. Looks like a good kit and I'm itching to build it, I've also built in the past ICMs 1/48 Spitfire and bf109, tricky kits but good once together. More recently I've done their 1/32 Gladiator and B-26 Invader both of which just fell together, very enjoyable to build. Like I say in the review ICM give you enough without it being a high part count so the build usually goes together quickly and means you can get into painting and weathering while the mojo's still high. Glad you enjoyed the review and thanks for commenting 👍

As soon as u said not rivet detail on the fuselage, that ruined the kit for me . With computer programming now a days that plastic should have all the details. Look at tamiya's 1/32 corsair , amazing detail. Yes i know u will say thats a $100 dollar kit
@spruehunter4 ай бұрын
I agree Chris, it's a bit of a disappointment. I was hoping like yourself that it would be more rivet detail but I've been disappointed with the new tooled Zoukei Mura 1/32 bf109 & fw190 both lacking the surface detail that say Eduard are known for. I'm more interested in the exterior surface detail that a kit that has that many internal details that once built will never be seen... Each to their own I guess. I did think about re-riviting it myself but I didn't want to add all that extra work when it took a bit of fettling to get the Macci together, definitely a kit that you have to constantly test fit and check seams etc. Nice when built, I've got mine into primer and planning on painting it once the weather warms up. It's a nice kit but not worth the retail price in my opinion, considering I didn't use the larger tubing that comes for the engine pipework and the wire for the antenna I'll use aftermarket rigging line. Plus I'll probably attempt to airbrush the "smoke ring" cammo so even the decals are no use to me... Like I say if you can find one for a reasonable price I'd get one as it's still a nice looking model despite its flaws. All the best SH

I think my 1975 Lego Hospital might have to be disassembled before long. There's another 7 Lego sets on top of my drawers, too. My three kits are on top of my turntable in the living room. It might mean a clear out before long, too. The joys of a one bedroom flat.

Can you please advise if the sealing matt varnish was enamel or acrylic? Many thanks and a great build.
@spruehunter6 ай бұрын
Matt varnish was Tamiya XF-86 Flat Clear thinned with Self Levelling Thinner in about a 60/40 ratio paint/varnish to thinner. It's technically an acrylic but more of a hybrid alcohol as can be thinned with acrylic or lacquer thinner. The only enamel I use these days is AK Extreme Metals but didn't use them on this build, so everything you see is acrylic or lacquer based. Hope that helps you out, thanks for your question. 👍

Hi Parko, I use a Harder & Steenbeck Evolution CRPlus with a 0.2 nozzle & needle. Although if I was in the market for a new airbrush I would probably go for a Mr Hobby Procon Boy PS270, comes with a Mac valve and trigger limiter and reasonably priced. The H&S is good but I do find myself cleaning it a lot as gunk builds up in the nozzle, probably the easiest airbrush to take apart and clean but I hear good things about the PS270 which seems to need less maintenance and cleans well by just running some lacquer thinner through. Hi Christine, I'd probably paint the model and before attaching the top wing I would drill out the holes for the rigging, just a few mm deep not right through then use a little super glue on your rigging and go about attaching it that way. I usually use Ushi rigging or Primm knitting in elastic (depending on scale) as they have a bit of stretch so good if you knock it while assembling. Hope that helps out and I will be doing a model that requires rigging on the channel soon. Thanks for your question! 👍

Always had a soft spot for the Tiger Moth, such a graceful aircraft. My father flew one as part of his PPL training, I have a photograph around here somewhere? I remember the amount of oil that used to drip out of the inverted gypsy major engine, two drip trays from memory 🤔😂 lovely smell of oil, grease and exhaust... misspent youth hanging around airfields. Also watching the 1984 "Tail of a Tiger" a gem of a film if you enjoy aviation, nostalgia and some varied acting but does heavily feature a Tiger Moth that is restored to flight.

Hello Mr sprue hunter. Just found your channel and am loving your videos. Just getting back into Ww2 kits myself after 25 year hiatus. Just wondering if you have a preferred brand. I've heard great things about HK and I've always found tamiya to be good quality. Would be interested I'm your opinion on the brands
@spruehunter7 ай бұрын
Hi Jason, I suppose it depends on what subject I'm looking to build 🤔 For WW2 fighters in 48 scale you can't beat Eduard for spitfires, 109's, FW 190's, Zeros, Mustangs etc. their Profipacks come with a mask set and photoetch (if that's your thing?) and usually more marking options. As you say Tamiya is always good apart from the 1/48 Sea Harrier, avoid it if you can! HK seem to be getting better and better with each release, I would also look at Hasegawa too. Most of their kits are older tooling but most are still best in scale and a relatively straightforward build. Best thing I can recommend is Scalemates.com, it's a database for all the history of model kits, good to check to see if the latest offering from Revell is indeed a new tool or a rebox from the 1970's! The main thing is to keep it so you're enjoying modelling, welcome back to the hobby, hope that helps and glad you're enjoying the channel. 😁👍

Ghost seams : look at close ups of the real deal and realise that panels hardly ever fitted seamlessly.
@spruehunter7 ай бұрын
I know, I've got reference photos of wonky rivet lines and gaps. These machines being built for war weren't always finished the best but had it where it counts. Only had to deal with seam lines where there wouldn't have been any on the real thing, thought I'd show how to deal with them reappearing so that others might benefit. Plus if I'd left seams all over it then it wouldn't look right as a scale model and there would be even more people critiquing the end result 😂👍

Absolutely fantastic you have done justice to the black undersides.the paintwork on the uppers as well .One thing I'd like to mention is the exhaust staining looks a little bit regimented and the soot usually impacted the outer third of the horizontal tail so a light dusting of black on a high mileage aircraft would be applicable on the tail and both sides of the vertical tail. You have captured the exhaust staining at the intersection of the nacelle and wing perfectly. A job in the upper stratosphere of modelling.

Just make sure the bomb-bay/cockpit floor is securely glued in place when you close up the fuselage, mine popped loose at some point but thankfully managed to sort out the issue, apart from that and the fact I masked the rear turret wrong. Ah well, I do enjoy shopping for gear at the best of times. Abteilung and a new set of PLW's are next months purchases. The thing that annoyed me is that the kit makes no mention of transparent red, green and orange for the IFF lights. I'm wondering if Ammo Crystal Red and Crystal Green will work, leaving me with just transparent orange to buy?

Will you be doing a build of this model?, I managed to get this kit a bit cheaper direct from Italy.
@spruehunter10 ай бұрын
I've got it built and ready for paint, few things to watch out for along the way but once it's together it's a nice kit, watch your parts clean up and test for before committing to glue. Don't bother with the larger of the two pieces of tubing that comes provided its oversized, 3D decals are good, wheel wells bad. There's a very good article online going into all the things to correct accuracy-wise if that's your thing. Next issue will be choosing which colours/brand for the Italian camo, so far an interesting build. Glad you made a saving as I'm not sure I'd pay full retail knowing what I do now, luckily I got a good deal so I'm happy but wouldn't recommend it to others at the RRP. 👍

Yes, just enough to cover the top window line from the bottom edge of the cockpit window, then followed the panel line from the above the windows towards the rear of the fuselage, if that makes sense? Thanks Dave, yes strange indeed. There are a few oddities with this kit, I'm currently working my way round the issue, hopefully I can find a solution to add it later in the build, the actuators for the undercarriage bolt to the firewall which is a new one to me so I can see why Italeri have you install it so early on as it's probably easier from a point of building but not when it comes to paint, especially if you prefer to airbrush your parts separately. I'm up to installing the wheel-well/firewall bulkhead and already found some issues in just assembling the engine, nothing major just odd. Anyway I'll hopefully get the thing together so the next issue will be the paint colours... thanks for your comment and sub 👍👍

I use an Infinity CR Plus with a 0.2 needle/nozzle, very easy to strip down and clean although I use mostly lacquers through it so less of a problem these days. Used to have issues when I used Vallejo due to the polymer they use in their paints. If you clean your airbrush out with lacquer thinners it manages to shift any paint left in the airbrush. If I was in the market for a new airbrush I'd probably go for a Mr Hobby Procon Boy as they seem the best value for money in the premium airbrush category. Budget airbrush I'd look at the Fengda one around £25 in the UK from Amazon, hope that helps. Happy modelling 😁👍
