Hi Rob, I own a window cleaning business, we collect payment by DD. Saves the grief of chasing customers. We use cleaner planner which links up to go cardless. Once the payment comes through the system ticks the customer off as paid. So very little admin. It would be perfect for a landscaper.

I've been trading almost 20 years now. After a slow and commitment first few year consolidating my business, organising, my standards and reputation, I now charge £60/hr for me and my full time employee who I pay £15/hr. I probably clear about £35k a year after costs and my quiet periods in January and February I do zero marketing bar a signaged van and word of mouth. Of course, each to their own depending on personal circumstances and ambitions.
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices 21 сағат бұрын
Do you tell your customers it’s £65 per hour. How do they react.
@PaddyDixieTheMinerva82
@PaddyDixieTheMinerva82 21 сағат бұрын
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices Well, £60/hr but I understand. As I referred in my comment, I focused on standards and reputation in the early years. And as most of my business is recommendation and referral, I can now justify my fees based on those work ethics, standards and the value for money I provide. So most people know what they are getting from me. There are cheaper traders out there - and some more expensive - but my crew can crack out jobs much more efficiently, quicker and to a higher standard than so many 'cheaper' traders. Not all my work is expressed by hourly rate either. A notable amount is costed on the whole job and sometimes depends on the client, like property management companies and contracts, for example. But the £60/hr thing is probably about the general average across the board, maybe a bit more. The reactions are usually fine, occasionally I have to justify it as I've explained to you here but mostly it's accepted. If I have more staff on a job I increase that rate by £15 or £20 per hour depending on the role that worker has their skill levels and if they are using machinery and equipment. So if I has 4 on a job I'd charge up to £90- £100 an hour. If I'm landscaping like patios or fences, I usually increase those fees again depending on the nature of the job and the skill levels of anyone on that job with me
@PaddyDixieTheMinerva82
@PaddyDixieTheMinerva82 12 сағат бұрын
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices Well, £60/hr. But yes, I do. It would be silly not to. But not all my jobs are costed like that, especially contracted work and certain others that I would cost as a job, if you know what I mean. The reaction is generally very positive. For the reasons I mentioned initially re my longevity, reputation, standards, work ethic from a mainly referral and recommendation customer base

@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices You're welcome, thanks I've seen a couple of your videos now and I hear you about hourly rates and word of mouth, leaflets etc and the pitfalls of them. I guess there are a lot of people embarking on this work - I've seen so many come and go over the years, as well as the success stories, of course - and I think their start up, customer generating and working practices depend on personal circumstances like your existing income and what your ambitions are for your business. I didn't need to depend on earning a living when I started in May 2005 but knew that I would do within a year. So my 1st thing was to go door knocking in my immediate area. I did leaflets, very simple ones on my home PC. But i didn't shove them randomly through peoples doors. I only handed them to people who answered the door and after we'd chatted. The handing over of the leaflet denoted 'closing the deal' as it were, or consolidation of a very strong possible. After two weeks I had 25 regulars and off i went. Upgrading gear at every opportunity (from earnings, not from my existing bank balance - I found that was more incentifying to drive me forward) and picking up more customers by referral from that original 25. I've never door knocked since. As the first few years went by, those referrals had brought me a lot more customers and, because they were referrals, I had a solid cash flow cos no one would want to mess me about cos their friend, neighbour, Mum, son etc etc had referred me and they would not want to upset them. Even my property management contract work companies are all ( well, 3 of the 4 of them) traceable back to that original 25 customers. The latest and biggest one, the 4th, which I've had for 4 years now, was from sitting in Lidl car park a week after I'd had my van sign written ( magnetic £90 signs) for the 1st time in the near 16 years I'd already been trading. I now have my van professionally sign written. It helps with the kerb impressions especially with regulars when neighbours consistently see the quality of the work. I've also had a Facebook page which o pick a bit of work up from but not shed loads. I just share posts from it occasionally and promote it to get followers but never spend money advertising on Facebook. I find that dedication, commitment, attitude, honesty, reliability, communication and humility are the best attributes to success. In time, being knowledgeable and the best you can be at your job as you learn and improve, help to enhance those core qualities and justify the financial reward you have earned and deserve. How long have you been trading now? And all the best to you too👍

Hi Rob, Enjoy your videos, bit late to the party on this one. Been in the trade 40 plus years but are 98% commercial grounds. With any domestic work you are right always visit to get a feel for the customer. We have had a few issues over the years with one big domestic owing 26k for a one off job, we basically made a nuisance of ourselves by constantly emailing, phoning, texting on a daily basis and we did get paid. A property management company tried to get out of £1200, it was not even their money but service charges they had collected from residents on the site, we served a statutorydemand which you can if the debt is over £750 and if they do not pay you can start winding up proceedings, they paid up. In our experience the small claims court is a waste of time, can take upto a year for the case to be heard and even if you get judgement in your favour no guarantee they will pay. Anyway look after that green gold and keep your blade sharp!

Hi, agree with all you said, people now have things go up by 3/4 percent a year plus inflation which would be around 10 percent or you get a email saying it's going up by x number of pounds. There's no communication any more, at least with your good self customers can see how hard you do work and see what tools you use to do the job.. There is always someone who can do a job cheaper but can they look live on what they charge ? Do it for the same price for years ?

Great video. Just like you wouldn’t get the bottle of wine at Tesco as a PAYE worker you wouldn’t like your employer to pay you when they feel like it… a week or two down the line, plus when there’s a bit of leeway given between the job completion and payment, the payee feels a “robbed”(pun intended), the value of the work done or goods seems to slip away with time, whereas if they pay on the day then psychologically it seems fair enough, I got the job done or goods and the value is appreciated. Keep up the good work.
