I think what Edelgard was doing was committing suicide over living with the regret of what she did. Dimitri gave her the dagger to “carve her future”, and she wanted to die rather than face punishment by Rhea

MByleth is canon, as part of the main series, FE: Engage has set several of the genders of the characters in stone; MRobin, FCorrin and MByleth. Granted, alternate timelines are a thing, but it still dictates these as the primary timeline versions.

is there *any* possibility that Byleth could have hit the dagger with The Sword of the Creator right before it'd hit Dimitri or that wouldn't be enough..? or am i just overthinking? In the end this cutscene is pretty awesome :) -ok ok ok now im reading the meaning/symbolism of her death, and idk if I should go through the Black Eagles and Golden Deers before judging, but either way it would've been sweet if Dimitri and Edelgard continued being best buddies..

SPOILERS: I mean, he killed her mother, slaughtered her family, and made weapons out of their corpses. So that amount of vitriol is more than warranted. Heck, half the reason she gets so mad at The Flame Emperor is because it triggers her ptsd from what Nemesis did in the past.

Edelgard knew he wouldn't do it on his own. Dimitri was ready to let her live, but she wasn't willing to go on. So she made the choice for him. The dagger wouldn't have hurt him much, she knows this

If she really wanted to kill Dimitri, you could’ve thrown the dagger to his head, or neck or heart. But she aimed his shoulder. She is forcing him to kill her. She fought for her vision which costed thousands of lives, for her to surrender and spared her life? That is selfish. She either achieves her goal or she loses everything.

My headcanon is Edelgard purposely aimed for his shoulder, not really trying to kill him, but rather making him kill her because she felt she didn’t deserve mercy or had lost and could only accept death for her defeat
