If you use nouns in your propositions and these nouns refer to things you cannot point to you are speaking nonsense. Unicorns, fairies, elves, etc. are fictitious. Ditto with spirit, God, and other abstractions. All nonsense. How metaphysics survived William of Ockham I will never understand. Why did we have to wait for the logical positivists centuries later to bury it? Early Wittgenstein good, later Wittgenstein bad. Carnap good, Bergson bad. Whitehead on the fence and wants to be realist and nominalist. Personally, I like Russell. He outgrew Hegel as well he should have, otherwise he would not be remembered today. Empiricism is where it's at.

See a priori knowledge is very important. We need experimental scientists to present us empirical evidence and "armchair" philosophers to theorize.

Purpose of life is not happiness. Purpose of life is a purpose, harmonious enough with our instincts and drives that it generates a will to endure, without breaking or sulking, the hostilies of human existence. The purpose of life being happiness is a very new idea, emerging out of the ashes of orthodox religion in europe. Marx, Nietzsche, Mill, adam smith et. al. are just ad-hoc attempts to replace what was lost in the ashes. Just Imagined Personal or communal Utopias where we maximize individual or communal "happy". Unfortunately, unlike money and all your consumerist traps, happiness is not a commodity. It is elusive, for the modern man, for the billionaire and for the homeless guy. Both are on drugs, of different sorts, to numb the pangs of existence.

The metaphysics of the id, ego, super ego is debatable. However the social observations seem right on and in keeping with observations by others who observe religion critically. I think fear of the unknown, of death, of the dark, etc are more significant than the child's relationship to the parents. Of course, rulers use religion to sustain social cohesion and control the populace. Japan uses ancestor worship, we use a sky god, as do all 3 monotheistic religions.

Ultimate freedom is something we cannot understand nor achieve in the modern world as every institution, and all our beliefs, react against the concept of having everything...ie nothing. We are groomed to desire everything we see and not to do so causes the system to react aggressively against us. Compliancy now manifests as ownership of things. Diogenes is a man who achieves everything by doing nothing. A lesson we could learn by.

After this interview now I have both of my favorite modern day philosophers having deep affiliations with university of Wisconsin, Madison! The late professor Dallas Willard & professor Steven Nadler! As well great job by Mr. Alan Saunders! Since I am just an engineer, had to listen to this twice! Thank you both!

Learn Evolution. Watch Richard Dawkins. "Natural Selection," very important word. Natural Selection is unconscious Selection, "Emergence." And when we say Universe came from nothing, we don't mean "nothing" is a thing, from which everything came ! No. Nothing means that doesn't exist, oxymoron. Universe came from nothing, means Universe is Omnipresent, till 13.8 billion years, and "There's no 'Before' to the Big Bang." You don't think about what was before to the Big Bang, it's a meaningless question, oxymoron. Creation never happened, there's no question of Creator. Only Evolution happened, Cosmic Evolution, Chemical Evolution, Biological Evolution. And Natural Selection means mindless material "Emergence." It's because of Entropy. Natural Selection is material "Emergence," Natural Selection doesn't mean Intelligent Design. If it's Intelligent Design then it's not Natural Selection. Whole point of Evolution is taking unscientific baseless hypothesis of Intelligent intervention out of the picture, and provide a "Natural" Scientific Answer, not depending on miraculous fairytales. Evolution isn't Intelligent Design. Evolution through Natural Selection means Materialistic mindless Emergence, Nature is "Blind Watch Maker." Whole point of Science of Cosmology is to take Super-Natural and Godly Magic out of the picture. Universe is Omnipresent, Self Sufficient. Everything unfolded the way it did, because of Entropy and consequential Emergence. Universe came from nothing, means Universe was never created, Universe is Omnipresent. Creation never happened, it's not Intelligent Design, there's no question of Creator. God is not a good theory. "It's called Faith cause it's not Knowledge." -Christopher Hitchens Universe is a mindless entity, and Universe is Omnipresent. "There's no Before to the Big Bang." -Stephen Hawking "Universe is ALL there IS, ever was, and ever will be." -Carl Sagan There's no such thing that exists outside Spacetime. Existence itself means "Existing IN Space THROUGH Time." "There's ONLY one World. The Natural World. And no Super-Natural." -Sean Carroll, Poetic Naturalism Consciousness arises through Physical Process of Information Processing in your Brain or Brain like Information Processor, no metaphysics or super-natural is involved. And Universe is not Conscious, cause Consciousness is a way for a system to interact with its outside enviorment, and there's nothing outside universe, there's nothing except universe. And universe is not a body to have mind. Universe doesn't interact with anything. Universe is everything.

Ian McDiarmid has to be one of the greatest classical actors in all of history. I've been reading Milton since I was 19 and its insane to think that one of the greatest pieces of work ever written had to wait several hundred years for a man to be born to execute the right tone and timbre and bring to life this masterpiece of literature. I've listened to this more times than I can remember. It's perfect, I cannot imagine anyone else doing better. Marvelous.

there is no contratory to the absolute good, just a lack of goodness in matter which can dangerously infect the soul or the part of the soul that interacts with matter.
