What about 4 reeds is that just like you shouldn't ever, really use it because it's just too stiff?

I would say size 4 reeds are definitely a speciality reed. But if it works for you no problem in using them!

can you please tell why on a berg larsen 110 metal mouth piece is so hard to get sound . and would a 80/0 metal mouth piece be better ? thanks
@KevinBene3 ай бұрын
Hey there. Well on alto a 110 is quite a large facing. You may want to lower your reed strength. But yes an 80 berg would objectively be easier to blow than the 110 with the same strength reed.

excellent video!!! ...finally someone who thinks the same as me!! ...although in my country (Argentina) there are not so many opportunities to try such a variety of mouthpieces, I think it is important to choose based on the dynamic range that is obtained from them..... advice: try those mouthpieces with a Selmer Mark 7 (I have one and the dynamic range is amazing!)

Unfortunately, I hear THAT much of a difference between a professional and a beginner horn. Notes are somehow all around in beginner sax, while the intonation control is easier on a pro sax. I always believe that quality of an instrument definitely matters.

Thank you so much! This is a fantastic video, teaching all of the saxophone effects, in Rockin around the Christmas tree. I really appreciate this, and I’m sure many other people do too! This song is massive, it’s one of my favourite Christmas songs, I too remember this growing up, at Christmas time hearing this on the radio, or on my Dads record player, it was one of my favourite songs. Little Miss Dynamite and the Awesome Boots Randolph 🎷 I loved Rock n Roll and this is Rock n Roll saxophone on a nutshell. This was the start of my love for saxophone. I have watched both parts of your video, and let me tell say, you are a great teacher, you have the same enthusiasm and excitement I have every time I pick up my saxophone! It puts a smile on my face! I’m learning song this right now for our Band! One again Thank you, once again, your a star ⭐️🎷

You can't avoid your reeds coming in contact with saliva anyway, so it's really silly to worry about the 2 minutes contact with saliva before you play and the play for an hour or so where they'll be in constant contact with your saliva. On the other hand probably the water doesn't do much harm either if you play after watering.

Hey Kevin, just rediscovered your channel. This is Nat, I dunno if you remember me from back in the school band days. I purchased an alto few weeks back after not having played for 15+ years... this tip helped me hit low Bb and without muscling it out. You're killing it with these videos man, much needed. Hope to see more from you and hope the gigs are going well.

My metal Berg Larson says 9 C so what opening is this ?
@KevinBene10 ай бұрын
Hmm. I'm not sure if you indeed have a Berg. I would not know what facing a 9C would be. It could possibly be refaced and the refacer uses a different facing system? It could possibly be a vintage Berg? In that case I am not sure of the facing system, but they usually follow the same system as the current made ones. Sorry I can't be of much more help.

Thanks Kevin. I just got this strap but I find the cord digs into my collar bone. Where does your strap end relative to your collarbone and do you find the cord sits on it? Cheers
@KevinBene10 ай бұрын
Yes this strap can be tricky with the collarbone. It took me awhile to figure out how to set it up, the cords did sit on my collarbone. What I did was actually bend just the ends, that hit my collarbone, upwards a bit. I needed a tool to do it, it's hard to get enough torque to bend a small amount of the aluminum with just your hand.

I have a Yamaha 62iii silver model. I'm thinking of getting an unlacquered V1 neck to add overtones, and knock brightness back a little. Do you agree with the reasoning?
@KevinBene Жыл бұрын
Hmm, I'm not sure if raw brass will nessicarily be darker. Personally I haven't experimented with raw brass necks or saxophones much. But from what I hear raw brass livens things up more (brighter), especially with Yamaha. But you may get interesting results with a silver horn and an unlacquered neck.
@rhrh2025 Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'll ask them at Woodwind and Brasswind. You may be right, and I don't need any more brightness. I guess I was thinking more resonance!

Am I having a stroke? I'm trying to learn this on guitar for a gig and I'm tuned to standard E-A-D-G-b-E. The first notes are listed as G both visually and on the staff which could be played on the 12th fret of the G string, but to match the pitch of this video and actual recording, I have to play the 15th fret of the G string which is B flat? Is this some idiosyncrasy of the saxophone or is this Kevin Bene making me learn it by ear?
@KevinBene Жыл бұрын
Yes the alto saxophone is tuned to Eb. Meaning a guitar/piano Eb is the alto saxophone's C. Everything will be a minor third off! Sorry about that lol.
@nicksova Жыл бұрын
@@KevinBene Thanks for the explanation. That makes more sense, but does this mean saxophonists have to use specific sheet music for alto sax?

Sir Kevin, You sound great on the 120/1,how does this mouthpiece compare to the small chamber Meyer mouthpiece You more recently tried? Thanks
@KevinBene Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Believe it or not, sound concept wise the 120/1 and the small chamber Meyer are pretty darn similar. The real open 120 facing on the Berg, focuses up the sound (IMO HR Bergs are a bit too spread out). The Meyer small chamber gives you that focus even on the smaller tip openings, so you don't need to work so hard! But the Meyer definitely gives a bit more roundness, that classic jazz tone, whereas the Berg has less roundness and a more contemporary sound IMO.

Sir thanks for the demo I’m liking the sound of the Meyer small chamber mouthpiece but it appears that something is wrong with your audio or mike cause Everything sounds a little muddy don’t know quite what that is but thank you nonetheless

Meyer small chamber is still great for me! And yes you are right about the audio, sorry about that... This was recorded as a live video, around when live KZfaq was relatively new, the audio became quite condensed. I have more of me playing recently on a Meyer 5 small chamber on my Instagram @kevbene if you wanted more reference.
