worked on t410i thinkpad. had to wait 1000-4500 milliseconds before shorting the circuit when the boot screen appears to time the crash. i need to reset a e11 5th gen non yoga, same supervisor password problem.

Bought a used T480 for $82 (70+12 shipping) It was missing a charger (which the listing made clear) and warned that the batteries might be bad Both the batteries were in absolutely horrendous condition chemically but are physically undamaged so not a fire hazard I'll have to replace both of them for about $70-80 this summer but to get an identical device would be like $250 given the spec I found so I really can't complain My plan is to replace the batteries and then nuke windows and make it a Linux machine for fun

My only problem with modern trackpoints is that I can't see the sensitivity to as high as I want. Even going up to the highest feels sluggish. These old travkpoints are just so much better.

I also use the T430s as my daily driver - as it still has the volume buttons which I extensively use and also has the physical switch for the Wi-Fi on / off... which for me is important to have - because I want to be in physical control, if actually any data can be transmitted or not! I also own a T460-i7 and a T490s-i7 which specs wise of course are better... but again I really miss the physical buttons too much... so I might use them just for some dedicated special purposes or maybe better just sell them. PS. at (Min:Sec) 17:35 you state, that it isn't possible to use a 2nd NVMe (2242 form factor) in the WWAN slot. While actually my BIOS looks like there would be a possibility for a 2nd disk...and on one ThinkPad forum they did write to me, that the ***Western Digital SN520 NVMe*** models should work (they are actually also flat on the correct side and use the B+M keys) ... I have ordered one used 512 GB used disk - but unfortunately it didn't show up in the BIOS. So now I don't know if (a) the disk is damaged (as it is a used one), (b) only 256 GB model would work... or (c) if it only works with some specific BIOS in it. Also, one German Lenovo refurbisher, did confirm to me in writing that NVMe 2242 should work with the T490s as long it is flat on the correct side and use the correct keys. --> Anyhow, I might even order a 256 GB disk to be sure it doesn't work in my T490s. For the T480s I think there is at least one KZfaq video where he is putting a short NVMe to the WWAN slot.

I personally used a T450s as my desktop replacement. Me and my dad received it along with other ThinkPads that are going to scrap, from X201 to T460. When we have the appropriate charger, we repaired it alongside 2 T440ps and the T460. It was configured with the high-end i7 (5600U) a touchscreen 1080p display, and maxed out memory (4GB soldered + 8GB SO-DIMM). Very nice to revive it from e-waste, and to use it as my laptop (even at school.) P.S. : The T480 series is recommended if you want native Windows 11 compatibility (It has a supported 8th gen Intel CPU and TPM 2.0) though it can run unofficially on the T410 and above with 1st Gen or newer Intel i-series CPUs, which is the unofficial minimum requirement to run it. (Intel Core 2 CPUs and below could not boot versions of Windows 11 higher than 23H2.) The T470 can also run Windows 11 (even though it has an unsupported 7th gen CPU), provided it has a TPM 2.0 module.

Another way of getting laptops for cheep or free: ask friends or family members. A lot of my friends have old, broken laptops sitting around, and they know that I like computers and often just give them to me. People at my school know this too, and often give me retired laptops that will soon be thrown out. Recently one of my teachers was clearing their room and found 2 old laptops, and instead of throwing them out, she just gave them to me. One of the laptops (a ThinkPad T440p) had plenty of life left in it (I'm typing this comment on it right now), while the other one (a Dell Latitude D620) was a 32-bit laptop, but could still be used for retro-gaming. Overall, if people know you like old computers, they will likely give them to you instead of throwing them out.

In a way, the X1 fold is the his if you think about it. Ignoring the abysmal performance of an air cooled intel chip. Being able to get a larger screen by sliding out or unfolding a “second” display.

For the laptops with broken display hinge posts, you could always remove the lid/screen assembly entirely and turn it into a "slab-top." Just hook it up to an external monitor and use it like a desktop computer.

I start by laying down a clean white towel, lint free and some texture to both pad and keep things from jumping about. That both protects and keeps things from disappearing. I use real nice not cheat tools, a proper sized screwdriver, magnetic. There are small magnetic pads to hold screws and parts, and a small plastic tray for parts too. Then i have a safe stable place and no people kids or animals jumping about. I’ve been tearing apart computers, instruments, watches, machines, you name it since i was a kid opening my dad’s watches. I’m 77 and love these thinkpads. Maybe some good glasses, and a strong desk light….this guy Sebi is one of the best on the Thinkpad series…Please, not to dis or criticize Sebi, I watch him all the time..Just suggestions to help you from loosing screws, and docking up your machines

These aren't design "oversights"; it's intentional anti-consumer, anti-repair practice by corporations to disallow private owners and repair shops to fix and re-use their hardware. The reasoning behind this is corporate in nature and since corporations usually buy their new hardware in bulks, it means more money for manufacturers, whereas having the ability to easily replace/fix all the hardware means no money at all, outside of selling brand new machines... except for the fact if it's old and it works and is still good enough... who will buy the new ones? Well, they could sell the parts and offer lifetime warranties with certified repair shops, but you see - that's a lot of work for very little profit margin and with how modern venture capitalism works, a no-go for the company's shareholders. We're really moving to a point, where we basically DO NOT OWN whatever we buy, the corporation merely "lends" it to us for a hefty sum of money. That said, I think T480 and T430 are still great laptops and definitely one of the last "classic", durable laptops.

Bought a T420 last year, corebooted it, upgraded CPU(was a 2/4 2nd gen i5, now it’s a 4/8 3rd gen i7 35w), RAM, changed DVD bay for an HDD, and has been the best laptop I’ve ever had, got also a e-waste Dell Vostro that my workplace was about to discard, fixed it and runs great, battery works, has been serving me well for months now too since my Thinkpad doesn’t has a battery, recently also I’m repairing an iPhone 6s (wrecked screen, home button with broken flex cable, battery needs replacement and camera AF doesn’t work), last month I replaced the home button and screen, this month I’ll replace battery and camera, I’ve been using it during daily because where I live is kinda sketchy and it has been serving me pretty well but I do miss playing emulators on the go

I use a Firefox spin and it consumes a ton of RAM especially if you're watching videos. Most Windows 11 installs will use over 4GB of RAM just idle, so it's definitely not good enough for the total amount in a system.

Just got a dead T460 for 30 euros on ebay. Got an HD screen, 4G card, smart card reader and a body that looks brand new. The cpu was busted, but a replacement was around 33 bucks. Got some samsung ram, a spare ssd and now I'm the proud owner of a 460 with vpro. (And I basically got all the even models from the 200 to the 480)
