Moved here from Dorset 36 years ago, best decision I ever made. My daughters were born here and had degree of freedom not found in many places these days. I am able to look at that view everyday come rain or shine when I walk the dog and no matter the weather it’s always beautiful. In fact as we drive down over the top of Grizedale and Millom is laid out before you on a glorious summer evening it takes your breath away my kids wait for me to say “ look at that, that’s why I made your dad move us here” I say it so often it’s become a family joke 😊

This town is fortunate in that it has a bypass unlike poor old Towcester in Northamptonshire, an old market town, where the A5 still runs through the centre of town. When the M1 is closed all the traffic north and southbound clogs up the town.

Its not something the police or traffic officers seem to enforce....A ball hitch is not reliable at these higher speeds...usually just for stability.

@andrewbradley318

You can see from the close up at the end that the caravan is still attached to the tow ball. The entire towbar has become detatched from the car. Breakaway cable was probably attached to the towbar so the emergency brake never activated. If the car had stopped 2 metres further forward, the caravan would have continued into the bushes with minimal damage.

I don't trust the ' new ' style of stabilising ball hitch , I use the ' old fashioned ' style ball , with a U J locking device which locks the cup onto the shaft of the tow ball plus a seperate stabilising bar , and I've replaced the steel rope with a heavy grade chain on the emergency brake , my caravan is an old heavy Tabert and I pull a car trailer also , neither of which I want to lose . Problem often is that people use their caravans once or twice per year and don't bother with simple safety checks before they leave home

Thank you for your reply, I only know the 'old type' you are describing and will have to read up on the new type. I'm just glad it seems no one was hurt and I hope my video will help ensure others do those safety checks you mention.

Can't see the point of all the cones on the Chiverton section westbound. The road looks to be complete. If anything they seem to be causing an obstruction with traffic joining from the new chiverton junction. I hadn't realised how far away from finishing large sections of the road. Thanks for the vids - great update.

@roadsandthings
@roadsandthings 5 ай бұрын
I've amended the description to include a click where the Bus stop is in Main street, just around the 90 degree bend from Finkle street. Sedburgh hasn't a lot of space around there but I imagine a rainy November late afternoon , getting dark and trying to wait for a bus there....The bus stop only needs to be moved 50 feet back & on the corner by the entrance to St Andrews, where there is a wide pavement and plenty of room to wait.

Another case of classic civil servant - Department of Transport thinking, rather than just widening the road by a few feet to create a proper dual carriageway and future proof the road, lets save a few pounds, make it less safe and then spend millions thirty years later rectifying the mistake, Illchester bypass is another classic mistake.

When the current upgrade between Chiverton to Carland Cross is completed the A30 will be dual carriageway from Junction 31 on the M5 to this point (Camborne West Junction). Come peak holiday season I can envisage traffic volumes constrained into this narrowing section causing significant tailbacks. I also predict big problems at St Erth where new (2023?) traffic lights have been installed?
@roadsandthings
@roadsandthings 5 ай бұрын
They already are constrained, heading down to the Hayle roundabout near st Erths there are often 5 minute queues... and thats autumn/winter.... and a lot of diving off through Hayle to avoid which is not good for Hayle.

It will be fantastic when its done, now all they have to do is sort out the Ilchester By-Pass and make it a proper dual carriageway, put some flyovers on the various A303 roundabouts and finally sort out Stonehenge. Should be done by the end of the century.

It needs simple grade separated junctions, Ilchester bypass would work without the bottleneck roundabouts...I do hope it won't be that long but I fear you may be right!
