There are several reasons why Winsor & Newton's paints are poorly rated. The pigments are not very vibrant. If you compare W/N paints with the other top watercolour paint brands they are the least pigmented. The W/N paints are harder to rewet than some of the other brands. I have seen a KZfaqr give beginner watercolour painting tutorials using W/N Cotman paint. The scrubbing she had to do to get the paint on the brush was unbelievable. Something you never do with your good watercolour paintbrushes unless you no longer want a tip left. The price for W/N paint is very expensive in Canada. I can buy Daniel Smith or M. Graham paint less expensive and use half the amount of paint as W/N paint.

I am enjoying this whole series immensely, from the very first sketch and stroke of color. I would like to make one small suggestion, and not because I am the artist that you are (far from it!) but because I have grown fruit trees, and been close friends with apples and pears through their seasons. When the blossoms are so new and tender, it would be unlikely for the leaves to look so spotty and kind of beat up, as in much later in the summer toward harvest. The spots do add a touch of dimension and reality, but they could be lighter, and fewer of them. I only mention it because you are speaking of making changes to avoid the symmetrical placement of some of the spots. I am learning a great deal from these detailed and generous tutorials, and I thank you with all my heart for making them available.

Paper is always the deciding factor for colored pencils. Any pencil can be glorious on the right paper and horrid on the wrong one. Unfortunately with coloring books we don't get to choose the paper. I find it helpful to note on the inside of the back cover the pencils that do and don't work well in a particular book, as my memory is just not good enough to remember all the combinations, since I own a lot of pencils and a lot of books. There is no real way to tell.. except to test them in the book. Some books offer a test page or a small image somewhere within, sometimes you just have to jump in to a page and count it as a lesson learned if it doesn't work out. Another thing that can help is to change your technique. It's easy to get into a habit with color application and treat all pencils the same when they are all different. For example, I much prefer to apply Polys dark to light, but Lyra Rembrandt do best for me light to dark. Dark to light helps a lot with pencils that have limited layers in them, either due to their formula or the paper they are being applied to not having enough tooth for them. It's always easier to lift a bit of color if you have to lighten, than try to cram on more depth when you have run out of tooth. A bit of workable fixative can also help in a pinch.. or a solvent. I don't personally use solvents so I try to figure out each pencil and work within it's limitations. That squeaky noise was filled tooth.. the pencil was just sliding on top with nowhere to go. A base in your highlight color (if you are using transparent pencils) or midtone color (if you are using opaque pencils) can help a ton as well.. watercolor, watercolor pencil, or either alcohol or water based marker for example. It tones the white of the paper so you don't need to lay down as much pencil to achieve a smooth finished result..without taking away the tooth of the paper. Again, test first to ensure it won't bleed through if you are in a double sided book. All that being said, the Procolour just might not be a good fit for you, and you would find it less troublesome to stick with pencils that get along with your favorite books and your personal coloring style. Nothing wrong with that, doesn't make them bad pencils, just not right for you. Art should always bring you joy, and I am a firm believer that if any product is not doing that for me, it needs to go to a new home.

If you don't have dark green use black next to a mid-green. It works well, especially with a limited number of pencils.

Hi Henny, I just wanted to let you know that even though I wasn't initially interested in listening to your podcast, I always enjoy hearing about your life and stories. Your voice is so soothing and I often watch your videos to get inspiration for my art or calm my anxiety. Your channel has been the most helpful for me in learning how to colour as an adult, and I still use your method of layering and creating backgrounds with a light touch of colour. Regarding holiday destinations, have you considered the tropics? Costa Rica is a great place to go if you enjoy wildlife, as there are monkeys and sloths there. I've also travelled to the Mayan Riviera to see the ruins, which was a great experience. Hawaii is also very beautiful, especially the smaller islands. I'm also really interested in how you're retraining your brain to deal with migraines. I suffer from fibromyalgia, which causes the pain pathway to stay open and overload your brain with pain messages. I've never heard of this type of treatment in any of our pain clinics in Canada, so thank you for sharing your experiences with us.

Hi there! Thank you for your comment! Costa Rica is on our bucket list so I hope we will be able to go there some day. I follow the brain retraining program in the Curable app. You can find more information on curablehealth.com. Most doctors know nothing about this, mine didn't either. But the program is evidence based. It really works! I've always had the feeling that my migrains and fatigue had a lot in common with ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, chronic nerve pain, long covid, etc. The problem is not our body, it is our brain and and nervous system. For whatever reason the brain and nervous system learned to misinterpret normal, unharmful sensations in our bodies. And then the alarm goes off and we start to feel pain, fatigue, dizzyness, etc. So our brain needs reprogramming. It takes time and effort to do this, but it is so worth it!

I recently discovered a game changer when it comes to watercolour pencils. If you are frustrated with lines or difficulty activating the colors try rough watercolor paper. I know it is not the common type of watercolour paper that most watercolourists use. The pencil stays on top of the tooth of the paper not sinking into the tooth of the paper and leaving lines. This paper intensifies the pigment to another level. I have used the cheapest pencils used hard pressure and they dissolved beautifully with no lines. The colours were so vibrant that they were as dark as my professional pencils. The rough paper is great for landscapes or if you want some texture to your painting. There is no white showing through the paper when you add the water without being opaque. Good Luck !!!

I agree with your comment that children need quality art materials. As a parent, I raised my son with as much knowledge as I could expose him to. Education begins at home. I remember when I was a child I would get very frustrated with low-pigmented art supplies. The pink was never bright enough no matter what I was given to make my art. Just because they are children does not mean that they only deserve low-quality art supplies is incorrect thinking. If you want your children to enjoy making art, give them good art supplies. At the least use student-grade art supplies from a professional art supplies manufacturer like Winsor and Newton Cotman, Van Gogh etc.

I don't think van gogh would be happy when a company is using his name to represent a student grade paint line up. Nevertheless, thats a nice and neat pallete. Could you take away those half pans and pour fresh paint inside?
@snuuby5468
@snuuby5468 6 ай бұрын
If you like the palette there is no reason you can't take the pans out and put your own tube paint inside the hole. Try different half pans from other brands to replace the Van Gogh paint pans. I have discovered that if you don't like your paint beading on the plastic mixing tray use toothpaste to roughen it up. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Your voice is so relaxing! I enjoyed this podcast while drinking some ginger tea and coloring in a Hannah Karlzon coloring book. I went to Iceland earlier this year, and I think the landscape is very similar to Norway. It was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Views that literally took my breath away. I got some photos of waterfalls and I'm going to try painting them in watercolor, which will be a new challenge for me.

Thank you for this video, Henny. The H&B pencils have been on my wishlist for a while, l intend to buy them for Christmas 😉. Indeed they do look a lot like other pencil brands made in China, but if they're smooth and well pigmented, that's OK for me as l only use them in coloring books, plus l'm a beginner so no need for lightfastness either. About pencils made in Holland, l've just bought and tested the 72 pcs Bruynzeel Expression, and l'm quite disappointed. I think they're not smooth enough (imho), they would be ok for children or students, for coloring very small areas, or for sketching. I have a box of 36 Bruynzeel National Gallery colored pencils and they are much smoother. But looking at the reviews online, it seems a majority of users love the Expression ones. Looking forward to more videos from you 🌺

Received my hardcover book today..amazing book for just $12.92 thru Amazon U.S. i started first using Faber Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils to see how they would work and its fantastic! Use just light water and it doesnt bleed thru or buckle the paper. Most of the pictures have such tight detail you wont need much water. I plan to use Inktense pencils next. I highly recommend this book! This is such a classy quality book for all your pencils. Oh and the paper is an off white which makes it so pleasant, has a kind of antique paper look to it.

I was looking at this palette yesterday and found that another matte surface would do just as well. I found a lid from a 2L ice cream tub had a slightly matte surface on the inside. I suppose it could even be roughed up a bit more with some sandpaper. This worked nicely with my Albrecht Durers and FC Graphite Aquarelle (and I suspect also well with the Technalo RGBs currently on their way to me!) A big advantage, other than being free, is that I'll just find another one when the staining becomes too much (Ice Cream purchases *may* be required, but I'm sure I'll manage ;-)

I discovered the Van Gogh watercolor paints a while ago. These paints are one of my favorites. The colors are very vibrant and of excellent quality. These paints are a better brand of watercolor paint than Winsor & Newton Cotman paints. In Canada, they are very inexpensive to buy as sets or open stock. In my art store Delta Art and Drafting Supplies they sell tube paints for only $5CDN per tube. There is an artist on KZfaq Paul Clark who loved the paints when he reviewed them. The palette of the 24 sets is one of my favorites. You can take the pans out and move them around or add another pan from one of their other sets. They have some unique colors in their sets.

Why I heard you sprayed something when you change to another color, then you cut pieces of videos in each color. Could be to make the tip softer and be able to make more layers. That could be misleading us in order to promote a bad quality product?
