I adore how most of us here in the comments have had a commonplace book for a long time, only without knowing what it's called. Thought it's just me, turns out it is a commonplace experience🤷

i must clarify, when i say his has a great philosophical mind, i’m not saying all or many of his philosophies are good. i’ve done some research on him and i actually do think he’s a good writer and the way he thinks is interesting and he’s quite philosophical.

The glossary to keep track of topics/sources!! YESSS, THANK YOU!! I have a system for my Notes app and Pinterest and have multiple notebooks for different subjects but have been wanting to start a commonplace book for a while but feared if I needed something specific I'd never find anything, it was for (hopeful) retention and presence only, which isn't bad at all but I knew I'd like to read my own mixed topic/miscellaneous textbook for fun or for reference sometime! An index is ittt (:

Helpful video indeed, thanks! It seems that if I need to link to an external source, it needs to be a public URL. Can I link to a file which is not shared publicly? Also, what's the theme that you're using?

Wow, been doing this informally for years, about a year ago started a newer version where i add the date of my entry as well as a decorative box at the front of the entry specifying what it's about, ie exercise, food, insight, etc. Like how books have the big decorative letter at the beginning of the first paragraph in the new chapter. I forget what it's called. Glad this popped up in my feed, very cool! 🤗

So I’m very new to Obsidian. And I have no coding knowledge at all. I am a musician and would love to know how to implement the chord sheet plug in. I found the plugin…downloaded it and enabled it. But I cannot figure out how to actually use it. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.
@NotebookOverloadd
@NotebookOverloadd 11 күн бұрын
Hi! Please go to the chords plug-in in your settings and click on the plug-in settings. There should be a setting called “block language specifier”. This is a word you type at the top of the page that will allow this plug-in to work. For me that word is ‘chords’, but it can be any word. Then add ```+your word (```chords for me) to the top of a note, and now you have a “block” in which you can copy-paste your chord sheets. I hope this helps! If it doesn’t, please send me a message on Instagram (@ notebookoverload) and I’ll troubleshoot with you there.

It's heartening to me to see that you have crossings out in your book, and that your lines in the index are wavy. I watch so many videos about journalling where people have beautiful handwriting and can draw artistic borders and illustrations, etc. My handwriting has always been messy and I can't draw to save my life, so I worry about spoiling a beautiful notebook. Maybe it doesn't matter so much if it's just for me.

It’s a sweet idea, but here’s the problem. First, I incorporate these things in my journal entries. But secondly, and most importantly, young people do not know how to read cursive so I use a computer for my journal and all my writing. I also think faster than I can write so typing is better for me and my handwriting isn’t great especially if my hand gets tired and I still have a lot to write. Anyway, my main point is to say a book like this is kind of cool to make and keep and pass on to Family, but they won’t be able to read it and I dare say it will cost a lot of money to have someone translated it into typed work at some point.

I keep a Google doc of iconic (usually unhinged) quotes from my coworkers (we work desk jobs) and we recently read through it CRACKING UPP. It’s become a relic since so many of our inside jokes were formed in these sentences.

I love this. I’ve thought about doing it for years but never have been very good at consistency. I just moved to a new state and I’m planning on getting my library card soon. I think maybe I’ll restart a commonplace notebook for the books I borrow. As for retiring your journals you can write on the spines with a white gel pen the months or years it was active. I do this for my Bibles and I really love seeing them on the shelf. Anyway thanks for sharing and I’m happy to have come across your channel.

Marcus Aurelius was always a favourite when I was at school - his quotations are (not unnaturally), legend; unsurprising then, that he should be one of the first protagonists for the Commonplace journal.....keep on keeping on - I've been creating these books for decades, tho' with a fountain pen; in the early days, employed a pencil - I could never get used to ballpoint or rollerball writing instruments - perhaps due to the fact of being left handed....wonderful presentation !

I didn't know commonplacing was a thing until very recently, but as long as I can remember I've kept an "everything notebook," where I do everything from journaling and planning to writing down quotes, lyrics, or funny text posts. I have an impressive but ever-changing page flag system. I don't think I could separate out a proper commonplace from the book I also journal in, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one who likes to record others' words and thoughts too!

This is exactly why I also stopped bullet journaling. I loved bullet journaling but when my planning needs changed, I really needed more structure. I went to the Hobonichi Cousin too but that was back in 2021 when they had the old Tomoe River Paper and I really didn't like that paper with the pens I use so I started planner hopping like crazy. Eventually I saw someone testing out the new Tomoe River S Paper that they use in the Hobonichis now and I saw it was much better for my kind of pens and so I got a 2024 Cousin and loved it. However, I found, in my planner hopping, that I really didn't need the space of a Month+Week+Day in A5 size so I switched to the April Start Weeks (since the Weeks Jan Start did not have the new paper) and I have been loving the portability and always having my planner with me and using the weeks. I do prefer the white paper of the Cousin but the Weeks is still a great planner. I use the memo accessory notebooks for my daily logging and I keep the planner pages for plans, projects, and to-dos
