I'm just waiting on mine arriving. Any suggestions for a good phone mount that might work on the handlebars?
@JoshFosterBikesAndEngineering
@JoshFosterBikesAndEngineering 15 күн бұрын
Though I've never mounted a phone I've seen a few different variations that work better/worse. The leader always seems to be Quadlock - they're pretty popular in the motorbike world as well. Given the brompton folds though just be mindful to take the phone off before folding it fully. Cheaper options include things from topeak. Just look at getting a really decent hard case - just in case... The alternative is to look at utilizing something like a smart watch to give you directions. With apple watch you have to use apple maps, but I've used it to navigate around cities without having to keep my phone out. Garmin and Wahoo also produce watches with these features.

When I was in high school we learned the trick was to coat the whole thing in gorilla glue. Didn't win the weight efficiency competition. But we were close and held 3 times as much weight as the next best.

Why are the cables not fully integrated ?
@JoshFosterBikesAndEngineering
@JoshFosterBikesAndEngineering 2 ай бұрын
A few reasons. The main one being it's a rim brake bike and the cables need to run externally to the brakes. 2 probably cost and 3 (just speculation) it could be making use of legacy designs

There’s no rental option in Sydney Australia. Out of all the bikes I’ve owned, from years of cycling (road and off road) I love my Brompton bikes the most. I”m close to 60 and just got an electric Brompton for health reasons and I feel like a teenager agin cycling.

Shame there’s no rental option. I think it opens up a lot more people to being able to afford a Brompton. Loved the electric Brompton when I tried it! Worked in a shop in Brighton at the time. If you haven’t been… it’s very very hilly.

In the year 2019, mostly known for other problems, I went to a Copenhagen Dealer and found one Brompton for the vacation money sawed! They had several colors and models ready to ride, so I never got a chance to take it out of a box myself, but I could see what I intended to buy, and found a by then, Top SuperlightM6LXBromton, in the Special, "Flamepainted"! It was absurdly expensive and since then I have changed most loose parts, bolts and nuts to titanium, for even less weight, but still looking mostly Standard, "Black Version"! No reason to advertise "Expensive Parts" on top! But my dear and similar age wife didn't find it fitting for our common vacation destination on Malta, though I tried to tell her that the contraption had been built to ride in the wrong side, so I was never allowed to bring it down! As now 76 I have used it here at home in Denmark, and also up absurd hills, fitting for its low gears, which I didn't know for what use I had till then, but had to walk on top! Finn. Denmark

Honestly, as a "Brompton Weight Watcher", the "Telescope Post" would near double my bikes weight, and I have now changed close to all parts on my much former than, 2019 SuperlightM6LXBrompton bike to Titanium and Carbon, where possible. I just changed to a carbon M handlebar yesterday, as some more, the last bolts on my brakes to titanium. I have a titanium, black seat post in several versions, from the standard 535mm, "children size", for folding reasons, inside my Travel Box, to the 600mm, Scandinavian Standard version. I have my clamp on the saddle below it, from that. And I hardly found out for what use I had the low gears, of my 6, till I met a very steep Danish hill, and had to walk on top! I like to have my bike look as Standard as possible, not to advertise, expensive parts, even though a Brompton is absurdly expensive! Finn. Denmark
@JoshFosterBikesAndEngineering
@JoshFosterBikesAndEngineering 3 ай бұрын
Hi Finn, thanks for your comment! You’ve sent me into a rabbit hole of looking at lightweight Brompton components now! I’m glad I’ve leased the bike for now I’d have started buying up titanium parts. Have you noticed any difference in the ride with your carbon bars? Doubling the weight though, any idea how much it is in kg?
@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188
@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 3 ай бұрын
@@JoshFosterBikesAndEngineering Well my much former than 2019 bike is around 9 kilo with mudguards, but the telescope post is about double the weight of a Standard, as it ads an extra tube and clamp! And a carbon handlebar also helps. I just added carbon clamps on my mudguards also. Sadly the 2 holders are permanent, and if not so I would have replaced them, after drilling out and added two from alu! You may consider China, Korea and Taiwan as the main suppliers of advanced spares and parts for a Brompton! They do produce Copies of the bike which are better and - lighter and near all, similar and interchangeable parts are easily found for much less prices. I suppose a titanium seat post, in any color or length in between also, is about the price of an original post? It takes a little more time but they are used to do trading from far away, much unlike the UK! The new EU trade system is sadly a joke, so I don't buy parts from the UK any more!!! Shops offering parts are easily found on the Internet, also from Major Chinese Internet shops. Finn

A T-line with mudguards is very close to my weight, and I have more gears, though I did wonder for what use I had the low gears (till I met an extreme hill and had to walk going up, on top!)? I have also changed parts on my original brakes to titanium, but my bike still looks totally original! I have tried to find a painted version Stempost, from titanium, as mine, but it is difficult. I love the government salary sacrifice initiatives and what it’s done for getting people on bikes, but some of the fine print stuff I find frustrating. Ownership of the bike might not technically transfer for years, unless you leave the company and have to pay a market depreciation value amount. Not an issue if you know you’ll be in your job long term. However, the opportunity to not just save on your bike, but your helmet and all your gear is really appealing, and for businesses- great for employee retention. You’ve given me an idea for another video, so thank you!

Great video! It looks like you know about the city a few things :) There is a video, from the early 90s, when a Finnish sailor filmed Vetntspils waterside, going on a ship towards the sea, which today looks lovely, but during the soviet time it was a closed port and it was like a dumpster, absolutely ruined by the soviets, you even won't believe it is the same place (military port in Liepaja was literally a dumpster when the soviets left it). In the castle, there was a prison until the late 1950s and the soviet military used it afterwards. Believe it or not, Ventspils was not one of the largest oil and oil products exporting ports in the USSR, but the largest one, there even was an oil pipe from Siberia. Now the city has gone a very long way to be a lovely city and only 20K people live there. I am glad you like it :)

Nice choice! How are you having it specced? The diamante is really stable at high speed, with all the other stuff on it at the moment it's pretty smooth riding as well. It's got a good amount of snap, a little laggier than a full blown aero bike (I had a system six and there was no hesitation in power transfer with that). I do find the diamante has been a bit more graceful around smooth corners than snappy turns - although that probably says more about my bike handling... I rode the Diamante to Brighton from the home counties and it was a beaut in terms of comfort and handling in the saddle. I've heard good things about the Venta, though I've not ridden one myself yet. Hope you enjoy the bike!

The Basso is crying out for some tan wall Vittoria Corsa tyres instead of that common German rubber. Beautiful bike and good to see someone of a younger generation embrace rim brakes as well as appreciate a nice 90’s machine.

The original tyres were tan (although admittedly 25mm tan Schwalbes not Vittoria). I've had corsas on various bikes and various tyres over the years and love the way they look and roll - they're sadly not as practical with my local roads and the weather at the moment. A spare set definitely needed for some sunny day trips to smooth roads. Thanks for commenting!
