Did you go through with the 3D printing of the angle finder?

I find that I get the best results if I do a few light stropping strokes at a high angle, and then finish with 3-4 light strokes right at the edge angle. The roo tail seems to be doing a good job, but I don't have a plain cow hide strop to compare it to.

Very nice sharpening job, Baz. Given the concave result to the aluminum oxide wheel, I am hestitant to sharpen any tool steel implements on CBN wheels. These I reserve strictly for knife sharpening. Thanks. I really enjoy Paul’s videos. Can’t say i remember him discussing axes. It’d be interesting to hear what he has to say. I think I’ll do my next one by hand or on the belt sander I think. I was shocked at the damage to my (old and useless) wheel. I wonder if they get soft in the middle.

Thanks for sharing, I am thinking just use a file or your belt linisher. Possibly not economical to do axe work after seeing the wheel wear. Its pretty easy to get a nice convex edge on an axe by hand.

@@rhinejuice it is pretty severe. Must admit. But while I’ve got old useless wheels lying around (got 6 of them), I may as well use them up. It’s fun to get nice sharp bevels on an axe. Nice work! I really enjoy watching you nerd out about your profession. I noticed that in some videos of yours, the leather wheel is a bit off and wobbles. 5mm of wear for only 30 knives seems a bit high to me. With the wheel I’m using where I volunteer it’s been on for months and I do 20-25 each week for the commercial kitchen and a handful for other volunteers and it’s still above 195mm. Admittedly most are “sink steel” but there are a few better quality Victorinox and Global’s in the rotation and a few mystery knives that take much longer to sharpen.
@iSharpen
@iSharpen 3 күн бұрын
Depends how you look at it I guess. It only takes me 28 knives to pay the wheel off so it's all profit from here. Yeah, Japanese knives really take a toll plus I'm on the 80 grit quite often adjusting the grit. At this rate I might average 6 knives per mm. With 50mm left (at 195 it gets tricky to do low handle ones although higher handle (chef knives, cleavers...etc) can be done at as low as 180. So if a wheel can be used until 185 that's 65mm @ 6 knives per mm = 390 knives per wheel at $15 = ? minus $425 for the wheel. Plus, some (I'd estimate 30% are charged at $20. It works for me. But we'll see how many actual knives I get for the whole wheel. This is the first time I'm actually counting them for real.

Hi Patrick, yes. I’ve mentioned it a few times before but you’d have to dig around in the comments to find it so I don’t mind explaining again as I know it helps people. Firstly, it’s messy. Secondly it’s expensive, third of all it’s coarser than green chrome oxide and doesn’t refine the edge as much as I like and lastly it doesn’t last as long as chrome oxide. From what I can tell, my edges are among the sharpest Tormek results online and I get them by using chrome oxide. One bar lasts over a year or more.
