Point isn't age gap, it's just a weird thing to say in public about person you not really familiar with.

As a note, "how many did you get? "42" is a reference to a hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. According to that book, the answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42 and I'm pretty sure that is what they are referencing. It is the kind of thing that book nerds and theater nerds (like me) will get.

I may be wrong, but I think the fansie 'Elizabeth' that Adam refers to at 4:10 is a reference to the penname under which the cast wrote fan letters to Tommy Bracco.

She's real! She deleted her twitter account a while ago but her username was literally what Adam said - fansielizabeth - she's currently a regular youtuber of a small channel!

I never really liked theater and now I KNOW I'd never like it. The niche references that make your hipster friend who only listens to obscure hard-core bands look reasonable, the blurring of the boundary line which feeds into parasocial relationships. Not for me

I totally get where you're coming from. I'm always a little insecure about my musical theatre knowledge- because everyone in the community has seen or listened to all the damn shows. It's definitely wrong to be afraid that other people in your community might out you as an imposter because you haven't seen something obscure (which is a thought I have bi-monthly). But in the context of this video, it's mostly different. Firstly, they only reference newsies the musical. Secondly, they are just playing to their castmates and their fans. Most of the references are inside jokes about newsies - not even musical theatre references. This particular cabaret was also just for fans to see them in person (I can promise you that anyone outside of that bubble will not understand these jokes - not because of gatekeeping but it’s just them interacting with the crowd), and this is the only performance from that cabaret that do the whole referencing thing - the other performances are actual performances. But I completely understand what you’re saying, gatekeeping and accessibility is a huge problem in theatre and stuff.

I'm kinda confused, is it when people like really niche things that bother you or is it people referencing things that you don't understand that bothers you? It's like if you were complaining about passing a convention for something you're not interested in or watching a film / music award show where you haven't seen any of the films or listened to any of the music. This performance is like a comic con panel except instead of a Q&A they're singing. It isn't made for everyone - just for the people interested in this piece of theater- because people have different tastes??? In art they consume??

Each bring something amazing to the song. The movie version does amazing representation, intentionally highlighting different trans actors and allowing us to see each of their faces as they tell their story. It also provides a much more realistic sense of virtual community-being able to bond with other queer people despite being far apart. The stage version does a better job of showing the number of people as the community grows and each person steps up. There's just something so powerful about that swell in the music that gives me goosebumps every time they start singing all together. I do think the one thing the stage version does better is Emma's last line. It's so powerful to just see her softly sing that line as everything focuses in on her. You can literally hear someone crying in the recording. The movie cuts away to her hanging up the poster and then ends on the other characters watching the video and it just drifts off when I wish it had left the camera on her to just let us sit in that moment.
