Most people don't read up on aikido before they comment. How can you comment on anything without some knowledge of it?

Saw this the day before my first class in Riverton,N.J. with Sensei Pierce. Koichi Tohei was his teacher. Spiritual awakening is the goal overcoming the EGO. Non resistance and acceptance of the now.

I can tell you that in practice, in a situation with some drunk dude at a bar, you can put someone down with with Aikido techniques. I once sparred with a Hapkido master. It's similar to Aikido in the use of your opponents energy against them, and the joint manipulation. He just stood there and asked me to attack him with any forward strike. Punch, kick, anything you might face in a self defense situation. Throw it as fast or hard as I wanted. It was absolutely insane how he was able to snatch and control me. When you watch the demos, they flip for the guy doing the demo to make it look good. But in real life, while you don't flip gracefully, you go where they want you to go, because they move your joint into a locking position that you are either going that way, or your joint is breaking. No, it's not a prize fighting art. That isn't its purpose. The negative to it, is that you really cannot be effective with it, without a mastery of it, because of the speed and precision in which you have to move to get someone where you need to in a way to control them.

That kid is literally half Seagal's size. That would NEVER work against someone his size.

Segal is and has always been a real Legit Master of Aikido, trained in Japan for 20 years. I saw this and another piece on him in 1988 just before "Above the Law" came out and they went to his school in LA where he was teaching students, then showed old footage of him in Japan being taught by the master there too. It's not that he was never legit, it's that he himself got or perhaps was always corrupted, but sadly that's what often happens in Hollywood.

Man, that dude got slammed at the two minute mark. Geez. I always hated being the receiving guy in demonstrations, I always ended up with sore wrists from the wrist locks. Those guys do not resist and go with what he’s doing so they don’t get hurt.

The knife defense at around the 3 and a half minute que is actually pretty legit. Hitting the knife ofline and attacking. The problem is that for his attack he chooses a wristy wist lock, wich is not so legit...

Watching these old clips of Seagal is bittersweet. He was very talented and seemed at the time like a decent person. I think Hollywood ruined him and turned him into the scumbag he is today. He should have stayed out of movies.

It's been said Morehei Ueshiba got exposure to Baghua Zhang from China. Which there could be reasons someone from China would teach him and request not to be mentioned. It could been a friend of Takeda that's not told of, it could be a few things. As myself, I've heard different things about myself, some true some not. Theres some true that others doubt or disbelieve. So, who actually know what where and when of every Morehei Ueshiba exposure? Consider before 1980's, no one ever heard of Gracie Jiu Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. How many have heard of Isshinryu Karate? Just mentioning.

If you live within a few hours of Ann Arbor Michigan and want to learn the art of Aikido from the closest source to the founder (O'Sensei) I would highly recommend training under Aikira Kushida Sensei at the Genyokan Dojo. He is the son of the late Takashi Kushida who was the number 1 student of Gozo Shioda who was the number 1 student of Morihei Ueshiba the founder, you can't get closer than that if you want to learn Aikido in it's purest form. The Kushida family changed my life in the best way possible and they are incredible human beings and great Aikido instructors. You will have the opportunity to train with more than a dozen black belts on any given night at the Genyokan Dojo and that is worth the small cost to join. Last time I checked they are open 7 days a week and hold multiple classes daily.
