This is a nice demonstration of improvisation around the theme of "Polly." It's played by Michael Baron on the 3/12 Wurlitzer pipe organ now in the Musical Museum, Brentford, London. The organ was originally installed in the Regal (Union) Cinema in Kingston upon Thames in 1931. Traditionally, Wurlitzer pipe organs weren't fitted with illuminated glass surrounds, but Union Cinemas found that they were popular with their patrons back in the 1930s, so had them fitted to all their organ consoles.

I am very pleased that you enjoyed the performance and I thank you for your friendly comment and the additional details. From the playing point of view, the illuminated panels are actually out of the peripheral sight line of the performer and there are stop tabs on the organ that allow one to set either a fixed colour or to engage the mechanism which rotates the changes. The acoustic in the Museum is very nice too.

Very nice performance of a tune I first heard played by Joseph Seal on this organ. For people who happen to find this video by accident, like I did, this is Michael Baron playing the 3/12 Wurlitzer at the Musical Museum in Brentford, London. As Michael says, it was originally designed for the home of a Chicago millionaire, but after the Wall Street Crash, the order was cancelled and the organ was shipped to the UK, where it was installed in the Regal (Union) Cinema in Kingston upon Thames.

Is this organ an authentic acoustical theater pipe organ, or a digital theater organ, like ALLEN ? If it is an acoustical theater organ, is the comninator registration digital( stops trigged by TTL circuit with logic gates), is this organ have a MIDI interface ? If Theatre organ sound are digital there are Christie's, and Wurlitzer's sampled sounds.
@TheatreOrganist
@TheatreOrganist 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Christophe, The organ is all authentic pipe organ, with the original relays and blowing equipment from the late 1920s. It is in the NDR Studios in Hamburg. There is no MIDI interface, and only limited ability to pre-set registrations. It is much better sounding in the studios too, when heard live. Thank you for your interest.

Wonderful video! Just a note, the Welte company in the US was split from Welte in Germany during WWI when the US government forced the sale of enemy assets. The Welte company US instruments were rather different and by the mid 1920s looked and sounded a lot like Kimballs (due to R P Elliot who left Kimball for Welte). Eventually Welte US was purchased by Kimball.

Thank you for your comment and additional information. The Welte organs certainly are interesting and this one sounds fantastic in the studio. I think there is a recording of Emil Velasco on the fantastic Virtual Radiogram site playing an American Welte - which displays a very mellow sound indeed. Well worth a listen! Best wishes from Michael

TheatreOrganist The only US Welte theater organ that survives intact (as far as I know) is the organ installed in Scotty's Castle in AZ. The house is now operated by the National Park Service. The organ originally was equipped with a roll player but is now played by computer. It does have a 3 manual console. There are several videos of it on the web, but the audio quality of the recordings and musical quality of the computer arrangements tend to make it sound like a band organ. There were a couple of really nice records made on it in the 1970s.
