So these are photos of white people in the 1950s. No pictures of red, yellow, black, and brown people. This is an example of selected history. Out of sight, out of mind, eh? Most of these videos show only white people and neglect the diversity that was present at the time

I enjoyed the photo show and the snippets of everyday New Yorkers going about their business. In so many of these retrospectives of life during a different time, I do get tired of the commenters who only come on to whinge about how life was so much better in "their day". Just enjoy the show and keep your negativity out of it.

Regardless of the "time slios" I really enjoyed these photographs. I try to mentally walk into the pictures. Hearing the squawking of the ooga hirns, heels clipping on the sidewalks, horses clopping along as they pull heavy wagons, the buzz of many conversations. It's all there.

Nice collection, but a few errors - "5th Ave. New York at dusk" is NOT 1920. More like 2020. At 3.58 we have a pic labelled, "Main St, Macon GA 1939"......which at 4.55 is repeated but labelled as "Fifth Ave line., Fulton St, Brooklyn. 1925".

Of,course the women in dresses and skirts look dated, many modern women now don't wear dresses or skirts alot now only in some occasions or never at all .The truth,is most women in the 1930s rarely wore pants so even though hollywood women were wearing pants in many cases,it wasn't that common for normal women aside from a few occasions mostly casual if ever, dresses and skirts are what most everday women wore.

You need to be more careful when adding the captions. Perhaps English is not your best language. The French fashion designer was usually referred to as Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, or just Chanel. Also thats Hedy Lamar, not Joan Crawford. Also, you could have identified the Prince of Wales and his wife, Wallis Simpson. These are easily researched and fact checked. Maybe ask an older person to proof read next time.

Not if you were black in Tennessee trying to eat at a lunch counter or send your kids to a decent school. 1962 was a great year, 63 was even better, 64 was the best with LBJ signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964. If the 50s were so great, great for who? Not me! I remember them. NY has never been nicer than it is now. I remember, in the 60s-80s, hookers on Time Square and outside of the Warwick Hotel on 6th Avenue. One block off of Central Park South, I remember in 1977 being surrounded by drug addicts, begging for money. NY back then was poorly lit, dark, dirty (OK, it’s always been dirty!) and, in many parts, dangerous. Tony Randall said it was even worse in the 20s-40s. Today is the time you want to pick to visit.
