The part which confuses me is how the original dimmer switch in the truck works while you have it in either position. So when you tapped into the ground from the low beam at 8:35 wouldn't you lose that dimming function? Isn't that the ground which is fed from the dimmer switch?

I'll be doing the same to vintage western snowplow setup off my cousins 64 chevy k10 step side pickup. Most of the plow is in great shape beside surface rust compared to the rest of the truck but the plow needs reskinned because the top curve is rusting off and I also need to put a new plate for the pin that holds the plow turned. this plow is so old it has to be swiveled by hand. I still need to find another 60-66 or a 67-72 to put it on but I can at least restore the plow setup to be ready to go. The frame mound is kind of interesting because the back has 2 plates on each side that goes on each side of the frame rails and the front mounts to the front leaf springs

I'm very confused, he shows at about 4:30 min. that there is one ground wire going to the plow light assembly that apparently is common to al the individual lights - directional, side, high & low. But at about 9:00 min. he starts talking about the Chevy switched ground headlight system and how the relay he is installing will switch the ground to the truck headlights and the plow headlights. He states that the plow headlight will have power all the time and the relay will apply (switch) the ground to the plow headlights - both high & low independently. How is this possible with just one common ground on the plow lights? If anyone has this sussed out and can draw a schematic that would be great...
@rvtek4695
@rvtek4695 2 жыл бұрын
Two separate systems, the clearance and signal lights work directly off the original truck wiring, the headlight system runs the grounds thru a relay, old time switches run power thru them, that has caused problems with heating up and burning out wiring, unless you beef up, (get bigger) wire to hold the load, then the switch is the weak link. Sooo to combat that you run a relay, power to the relay is constant but the relay needs ground to work, so your switch puts ground to the relay turns the relay on and lights come on.
@paulbevacqua6916
@paulbevacqua6916 2 жыл бұрын
@@rvtek4695 Yeah, using a relay is the correct way to go. I figured out what is going on after playing it several times and watching what the video showed and not what was said. The switch in the cab is applying ground to the relay coil, activating the switch in the relay, which is applying POWER to the headlights not ground. Also - the ground being used must be coming from after where the 2 low or high beams grounds are joined. If the ground used is the one shown (at one of the bulbs) the other truck headlight would still be lit after switching to the plow lights.
@johnfallacara7110

Do you have to separate both left and right ground because on the harness they have separate grounds. So do you have to have 2 separate ground for each light to the new switch

Each light is grounded independently
@paulbevacqua6916
@paulbevacqua6916 2 жыл бұрын
@@terrygraves4736 Do you mean each bulb has a separate ground? the wires from the lights appear to have one common ground wire for all the bulbs and one wire to power each bulb - directional, running, high beam and low beam. How are the high & low beam grounds switched if the directional & running lights are using the common ground? Seems the power to the headlights needs to be switched for the plow, not the ground as for the truck, unless I'm missing something.
@terrygraves4736
@terrygraves4736 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe I should have asked, are you talking about the plow lights or the original lights on the truck? The plow lights on my truck are separate, one ground for each light, the ground for the clearance and signal lights are tied to the headlight bulb wiring and ground to the plow frame individual. Hopefully that answers your question
@paulbevacqua6916
@paulbevacqua6916 2 жыл бұрын
@@terrygraves4736 Thanks for the reply, I was referring to the ground for the plow lights. If the ones on the video have independent grounds for each 'bulb' this was not made clear. A guy I know is trying to install plow lights to his 2002 silverado and I believe his plow lights have one common ground for all bulbs making it all hot switched. This makes it difficult to figure out how to wire the headlights into a ground switched truck. The directional & side lights being hot switched (in the truck) are easy enough, but if the truck headlights are ground switched we need to come up with some unique relay solution to switch from vehicle to plow lights and also to be able to change the plow from low beam to high beam. I'm now leaning toward just wiring the plow lights directly to the battery, putting a high/low/off switch in the cab and tying the clearance & directionals to the truck lights and not worrying about integrating the plow headlights into the truck headlight wiring.
