You're not supposed to pull it tight before anchoring. Make sure your holes are perpendicular to the neck, run the string through and leave a little slack

Excellent presentation.I would like to add that you need a good pedal tuner to properly intonate.I tried using a clip on tuner and it did not work well, all the readings were far off. Switched to a pedal tuner and my E & A on my bass were only slightly sharp.

Cool video. My answer is the same as you demonstrated: yes, you can get damn close. Close enough for 99% of ears to not hear a difference in the context of a recording. But from the player's point of view ... you're still not having the P experience ... because of the neck profile, like you aptly said. FYI, for your beginning audience, when talking about the width at the "end" of the neck, it's conventional to talk about "nut width" ... the width at the nut. And like you're saying, yes, since it determines your string spacing, it makes a huge difference in how it feels and how you play. Also, great explanation about pickup placement and how it is the biggest factor in determining the instrument's tone. Well done on the controls, too. Keep going!

I have the opposite problem on my Taylor 714CE. There are a few fretted notes that do not ring properly. They have a muffled or muted sound.

my hands sweat a lot and a wound G is easier to hold onto when bending because of the winding. It also makes more sense to me aesthetically, the tuning pattern changes after the G, and so does the string type, and the string tree only holds down the plain strings

I'm not trying to be a "D" but a different tuning does not make it a baritone. The longer scale length is what makes it a baritone (usually 26.5" or longer). If you tune down a standard guitar it doesn't magically become a baritone it's just a tuned-down guitar.

It’s all depends on what pickups the jazzmaster have, for example if you play a jazzmaster with bright pickups I’d prefer 12-52 or something but mine has a mastery bridge and my pickups are Duncans so I use 11-49 d’darrio

I have been playing my Taylor for the past 10 years almost exclusively and now I have grown so accustomed to the 15” radius and 1.75” nut width and I am looking for an electric guitar with similar dimensions.

good on the pair of you for not buying into the bigger is better toxicity. literally a matter of its not the size of the instrument, its what you can do with it. I love a short scale bass the fretting is a lot easier, I play a modded Squier Bronco and its an awesome bass. there is something I think you didn't look into with these basses, on a Fender, normally the P or J with the 34 scale the neck pickup or only pickup is in the middle, on a Gibson with the 30 scale, there is often a neck pickup and a bridge pickup and the neck is actually in the neck, I have always maintained this affects the tone as the neck pickup is picking up the string vibration differently. Also if your 30 inch scales are short scale, what would you call my 25.5 inch scale bass?

Voltage attenuators are to protect British amps that were designed to run on 115V and will protect the circuitry of your amp from US standard 120V that often exceeds 124V the variance in tone is subjective but the protection it gives your British amp is objective.

I always wondered if Fender brought these string gauges out to "fix" the intonation on an original Telecaster bridge (which they do, funnily enough), Leo was an engineer after all, not a musician.☯️👍

Sustain relies on nut, strings and bridge...the better the quality the longer the sustain..I've played boltons with insane sustain vs crappy built neckthrough's...Tone relies on pickups only...no wood involved in tone shaping on electric instuments.

Everyone needs to grab a short scale. Even a cheapo. Go to a pawn shop and grab an EBO/SG bass, or a Hofner copy. Often when they're used someone already modded them. I've been playing bass for over 20 years though recently obtained an IYV Beatle Bass... and it's scary good. The original Hofner basses were meant to sound like an upright and the short scale, flatwound strings, and mostly hollow chambers really make you think differently. Next is a 32 - something in the middle... though really the shorty covers so much ground I'm not too pushy yet.

Funny, I didn't realize this til just now: with a "5 string" bass, you're really only gaining two or three notes if you're playing in any given key. For instance in the key of Em like you were playing, you can then grab the D and the B. That's just two notes. I suppose also the C walking down to the B would also work, but it's almost like a passing note to get to the 5th (that low B). Anyway, I guess growing up never having played a 5 string bass I thought you were gaining a lot more than you actually are. It's a few extra low notes if you're staying in key. Even chromatically it's only 5 notes total... but staying in key you're gaining 3 at best and most likely 2 for most basslines. Interesting. (you would also gain Cm and Dm in a lower register.. that's actually pretty cool. Instead of playing Cm at the 8th fret and Dm at the 10th fret... or 3rd fret and 5th fret but the 3rd string)
