Most people don't know what this movie is really about. Most of the interpretations here, if not all of them, are completely wrong.

I first watched this back in the early 80s. It blew my mind. I've watched it countless times, and it still blows my mind. It's also great fun watching other people's minds blown, 52 years after it was made. Thanks for doing it. For me, it's aliens giving early humans tool making intelligence, then the rest of the history of mankind is insignificant (to the aliens) until they discover the monolith on the moon, and ready for the next intelligence evolutionary step. Then after that, you can come to your own conclusions, you're not supposed to understand it. Life, ageing, death and rebirth as a higher entity?

I'm appreciating John Williams more and more over the years. He sets the tone perfectly for so many of the scenes.

It’s funny how everyone that cries about this movie being a prophecy, are the same ones that would presumably be contributing to this future. Assuming they actually have above average IQ, they are less likely to reproduce, or understand the sacrifices necessary for it, and thus choose not to. Then politicians propose importing low skill, uneducated people from the 3rd world as a means to replace the shrinking population, and they clap their hands over this proposal. Stop crying on the internet and start a family 😂

very funny. The primary complaint in 1968 was the lack of dialogue. This film set the visual and sonic language of Scifi films thereafter.

Kubrick pioneered the techniques used in every science fiction film ever since. Even camera techniques like the hand held walking camera that puts you into the scene. But none have ever created such an immersive and realistic experience of space as 2001. Kubrick spent a fortune building a full size centrifuge to get those amazing space ship interiors. And of course the Star Wars Death Star is lifted from 2001. But most people don't pick up on the way the shape of the Jupiter ship is similar to the bone the Hominid ancestor first used as a tool. Just think of the monolith as metaphor. Everything else follows from that philosophical construct. After the first dozen times watching the movie you almost get to the point of understanding it. Almost. It wasn't a prison, it was a zoo.

Even knowing the ending, the power of rewatching it - and seeing the steps taken to construct the tale - remains a great pleasure. Yes, rewatch it. And if you have a chance to see it on the big screen with a huge audience, it will be an experience so far above this sterile, solitary viewing. In a few years, Hitch delivered another mother movie - MARNIE - another film that delivers the effects of mothers on a child.

Great reaction! I didn't think I'd like it when I watched it, but it grabbed me and pulled me along on a hauntingly creepy ride. The atmosphere is crazy and the performances by Defoe and Pattenson are absolutely brilliant. Best acting I've seen in years. Definitely worth watching multiple times, I find things I missed the first time. The use of black and white really works here.

Hey, Carrington sorry if my wording was misleading, It wasn't a critique of your reactions, I just meant I generally don't watch reactions of movies that I already know I don't like. Your reactions are all great and of the movies you've reacted to I like most of them. So I'm sure to find hours of entertainment going through you catalogue.

Just started looking through your reactions and I love most of what you've reacted to so far, sorry I didn't find it sooner. Just subscribed, getting ready to binge some reactions. Saw you did Balls of Fury recently, have you seen Dodgeball with Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller? It's way better than BoF and I liked BoF, but Dodgeball is freaking hilarious.

Great reaction! Have you seen The Princess bride, The Thing 1982, Lake Placid, Bladerunner, Galaxy Quest, Alien, The Long kiss goodnight? They are truly great movies most people under 35 have missed out on. Tremors was a box office bomb in 1990 but made a fortune when it hit the video tape/DVD rental and sales market. Kevin Bacon has said he thought his career was over when this movie came out, but he now says it was the best decision he made. People ask him about it all the time now. The Long kiss goodnight is one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time right up there with Diehard, it's a mystery/thriller/action movie starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. Sam Jackson has said his character Mitch is the favorite character he's ever played and he's been in 100's of films. He even says this after almost dying on set doing a stunt with Geena. I highly recommend all the movies I mentioned, they don't make them like those anymore.

Bladerunner is one of my all time favourite movies. Galaxy Quest has been on the list for a while, but I'm told it's a nightmare to get on youtube with copyright which always puts me off. I'll get to it though. I've got reactions up to The Princess Bride and The Thing. The Long Kiss Goodnight sounds like a good one for December 🤔

@@RyanCarrington Even if you don't do a reaction video to Galaxy Quest I 'd still recommend watching it, it's a true gem. Lake Placid is as good as Tremors imo. It's another horror/comedy with a bit more horror, I love creature features.

Of all the teen films of the 80s, this one aged the worst. Culturally, I don't believe the 80s really started until 1983, so this was a 70s film, in my opinion. Just an ABC Afterschool special with an R Rating for adult content. All the actors portraying Gen Xers were really Boomers.

I smoked with my nan a few times, she was an evil old codger of a woman but it'd make her laugh and smile a little. She definitely was not as quick witted or funny as these nans but it was an interesting experience to have had. Vegan food was kind of a joke back then but somehow they've managed to make some of the best tasting stuff I've had in ages now as a food explorer who loves roasting and smoking meat.

In the early scenes around Earth and the moon, the music is the Blue Danube. It's light and fun and comforting. When we get into deep space the music changes. It's now cold and weird, not comforting at all.
