As a KCSM student from 1967-1969 (and 1st recipient of the Paul Romagna Award), I'm grateful to both Dan Odum and Doug Montgomery for the guidance and opportunities that started me on a rewarding, successful career in radio/TV broadcasting and audio production (from K101 FM, KYA AM/FM, KGO TV, and own production studios). Dan Odum and Doug Montgomery's positive influence has affected many lives far beyond their students. A deep 'Thank you' Dan and Doug for all you have done for all of us! (and thanks to Jim T, and Joe Morgan for the 'you can do it' motivation).

I was a student at KCSM 1970-1972, I was interested in technical directing, Doug and Jim allowed me to do continuity directing. I kind of became a jack of all trades, camera, psa announcer, radio experience. We produced two documentaries, one was well received about the San Francisco International Airport. It took me about 4 months to gather the black & white film, by contacting NBC Burbank to donate the film. Doug Montgomery helped in that process by contacting NBC on my behalf. Jim was a great mentor in the technical field and respected all of them for their support. Doug came to me one day and suggested an opportunity to apply for a 24 hour all news network on cable TV. I thought that would not work and decided to join the Navy. This was the beginning of CNN. While in the Navy I worked for KUAM Radio and TV on the Island of Guam. I did the 6pm new reading copy for 60 minutes, no commercials or PSA. I convinced the manager of the station to do a Sunday top 40 program with listeners calling in. He said, OK and then I had a dilemma of which I solved by buying 100 "45" singles. Our news program at 6pm was broadcasted to American Forces Radio via short wave radio. Upon leaving the service I went a different direction in the retail field. I have been a store manager for 5 corporations and just recently retired from Lowes Home Improvement. I am sad to see that KCSM as we know it has come to a close. I will always be grateful for the life experience that Doug, Jim and Rich instilled in me to want to be successful in the television. I will always be grateful to them for that experienced.
