Wewwy intewesting. I don't have a savvy enough mind to evaluate it, but Phil Mickelson has spoken about how he "hinges and holds" and (I believe) says he doesn't use the bounce. It's amazing how so many differing techniques can produce such great outcomes. Gotta admit, I'm lost without your videos and advice from a few friends who are better golfers than I.

Wedge game and chipping holding me back big time. Long game in great shape. I can do it in practice but on the course i just struggle. Hopefully this helps get me back down to to Scratch and beyond. Thanks for all your posts and keep going!

I've been using this drill since your first post and it's really helping me realize that I was dragging the handle through impact. On your last shot that you hit and commented about the sound, what was different there? Was it just the impact spot?

Totally agree with the remark about high handicappers, the over acceleration and subsequent efforts trying to deal with the sinking ship. If he starts with too much speed in the downswing there will be an obvious change of mind so that it looks like, feels like, and probably is, a yip. But I'm not sure I like the idea of the alignment stick as a cure. It's like stabiliser wheels on kid's bikes, sure the kid can stay upright but only until the stabilisers are taken off. The better way is to remove the pedals to start and then put them on when the kid can control balance, breaking, steering. I think the key to panic-free chipping and pitching is accelerating the clubhead throughout the downswing and through the ball. Gravity is on your side on the way down so you're not fighting that. Slight pressure from the trailing hand will keep things honest through the ball. Starting from a backswing that is clearly too small for the pendulum effect (gravity only) to get the ball to the hole, we only need to increase the pressure from the trailing hand to correct the energy in the club. This is simple, we are only worried about a single agoniser muscle group, if we were to try and decelerate the club then we would have to switch from agonisers to antagonisers - a whole different kettle of fish! So how do we take the pedals off? At the top of the downswing make your trailing hand flat so it can only push. It must stay in contact with the club throughout the down- and through-swing. It feels like you've given up almost all your control of the club. Which you kinda have. Even through the lead hand still grips the club and could change direction, slow, or accelerate the club it's very difficult to actually do for some reason. Grieve suggest taking the thumbs off the club which works equally well.

I’m trying to be mindful of grip pressure and keeping things light and fluid. Not sure that gripping a stick would help but understand that regardless of style, this will help you rotate and move through the shot. Interesting stuff, thanks.

i have been working on this, but fairly open I send the ball way over the green. I do hit the sand first, but I guess too shallow. The good news is that the ball does come out!

With your method, do you sink your feet into the sand? Do you take your club to full length? For me, the problem isn't getting out of a trap, it's getting through the green. If that happens with your approach, what could be the reason? In short, it's the same technique as making a chip from a hard surface.

very interesting, although a little unfair I suppose since you say you have never hit the chipr before and no doubt have had lots of practice chipping with your 60 degree. I have a graphite Ping chipr and a graphite 60 degree and for an average golfer I would suggest the chipr would win hands down in many cases as I find the 60 is way easier to chunk unless the lie is great.

That's a nice simple chipping action for those conditions. ie slow (what I presume) UK greens and nice cushy surrounds. Would like to see what you do with Kikuya grass (that often has grain) over moist sand base and fast greens. Join another club haha...but seriously hope to find some other solutions on your page.

What I learned from this video is to never tap in a gimme. James just always picks up the ball, avoiding the embarassment of missing a putt that was given. I'm definitely going to start doing that. Great video. I know it's months old, but I love this pairing of James and Matt. My top 2 favourite KZfaq Golfers.

I tried the clock face strategy but was unable to consistently regulate my club head speeds on the course. I think it would work if I had a launch monitor and could practice each setting to get consistent speeds and build confidence, then maybe I would trust it enough for the course.

I've been trying to help my other half with her bunker shots and this looks like a great technique that she might get to grips with. Would this technique be ok for compacted wet sand which we get quite a lot in Cumbria? Many thanks John

This is an excellent method but how do you control the distance? I’m getting out of the bunker but many are flying the green. Even the ones I hit good are coming out far. How do you hit a short, very close green side with this method? - thank you
