J. D. Vance’s derisive tone is perfectly on brand for the party of Trump. Trump’s whole appeal is that he “says what he really thinks” - e.g., he engages in mean-spirited hectoring, reductive stereotypes, and childish name calling.

Skye mentioned folks in their 20’s waiting or choosing not to marry is delayed (meaning extended) adolescence. Isn’t that close to the assumption that childless women are selfish or even sociopaths?

We certainly cannot see inside a person’s heart on that point what concerns me about the reaction to the Olympic display is that we do not accept what the Olympic committee say that they did not have the last supper in mind. I want to react as Christ would have me. I appreciate the desire of my brothers and sister to defend Jesus who never defended himself. I want to know how to,ostensibly to the critique and how to tap into the conversation with secular people whose parameters are different. We end up talking across rather than to one another.

Just my 2 cents, I think people who firmly believe in their heart of hearts that Jesus is coming back in the next 40 years should step down from leadership in countries. I believe Jesus is coming back, but I also see so many people who assume it's going to be in their own lifetimes, and they just... Stop planning for the future. Because they don't see the point. Leadership positions, like in politics or schools, should be held by people who believe this world is going to keep turning, and that we need to keep making it better for the next generation. Jesus could come back tomorrow, or today, or next week, but that's been true for over 2000 years. We need people who yearn to invest in the future and be pleasantly surprised doing good work when the Lord does come back. Not people who are standing next to the light switch just waiting to close down for the night.

Jesus never fought a culture war. Jesus never sought political power. Jesus ate with sinners. He simply came, taught, healed, changed hearts, and saved our souls through his death and resurrection. But the religious right would have us believe we need to engage in culture wars, seek political power, shun sinners, and shame/guilt/bully/force people into following Jesus. The real Jesus and the Jesus of the religious right are opposites.

Christianity is a dominant social force - when people criticize it, they are engaged in principled resistance, not "persecution". You can't persecute the powers-that-be. This is the non-Christian side of the Bremerton praying football coach lawsuit. Students who declined to pray with the team were punished with worse positions or less playtime - this is persecution.

The "blessed hope" is found in Paul's writings. What Christ was speaking of were the events leading up to the "glorious appearing." In that appearing, angels are present. At the blessed hope, Christ is in the clouds calling the church to him. The resurrection at the last day and glorious appearing were not a mystery. The blessed hope was a mystery according to Paul's letter to the Corinthians. It apparently is still a mystery to many. Most of the mysteries in scripture are revealed in Paul's writings. The "mystery of the gospel" was given to him. If the four Gospels are not read with this fact in mind, these matters cannot be understood clearly.

The French display was a show of the acceptance of transgender people and protest art. I understand that some people don't " like" and don't care about this display. To the point about NOT reacting to the Paris opening ceremony travesty, I maintain that many in the LGBTQ+ movement would not feel like they have to be so vehement in defending their lifestyle if "Christians" were not so publicly angry and hateful in their opposition to the lifestyle AND those in it.

@@michaelward1341 - On the other hand, in the nineties, people who identified as LGBTQ+ could not marry a person they loved and it was not until 2003, by Lawrence v. Texas, that laws against same-sex sexual activity were finally invalidated. Additionally, conservative jurists still continue to threaten the gains from Obergefell, now nine years later. If you were consistently being told that you were a “second class” citizen, wouldn’t that make you feel somewhat “aggressive” as well?

It is so frustrating how in evangelical circles, the fact that there are many people who are selfish until they become parents, and it takes becoming a parent for them to be less selfish, is not just normalized, but seen as a good thing. I fully acknowledge there is a special bond when you become a parent, and living for Someone Else, it is a beautiful thing. But to me, it just highlights the selfishness of the person before. I cannot tell you how many pastors I have heard say they never understood what love was till they got married, as if it’s a good and normal thing. If it takes becoming a parent for you to see how selfish you are, that shouldn’t be a thing that is normalized, but rather as an area of failed discipleship if you are a follower of Christ

Amen to what you've stated here. It echoes what Skye and David are saying. Family relationships do help to refine us when we engage in them with Christian intent, as do our interactions outside of those we're related to. Whether or not we have children, we should be seeking to be transformed into the image of Christ.

@@Wren_Farthing but here’s the thing, they don’t at all mention that it is messed up that someone has to have kids in order to realize that they are censoring themselves and being selfish. Yes, when someone becomes a parent, it requires them, if they want to do it well, to be less selfish. period but as a follower of Christ, we should already be aware of how important it is to center other people. It’s the normalization of people, and the more I thought about it I’ve only ever heard men say this, that they didn’t know what love was until they became parents. But they didn’t know how selfish they were until they became parents. That is not a flex, but that is something that should be lamented.

It’s not “weird” to have a large family and homeschool your kids. I can fully understand not voting for Trump as a Christian. He disgusts me, too and I don’t plan to vote for him either. But it is a bridge too far to try to get me to support Kamala Harris as a moral alternative.

Frank Schaeffer, son of the renowned Francis Schaeffer, strongly denounced his evangelical heritage, calling for “real family values as opposed to fake family values.” He said, “What we were pitching in the 70s was really just repackaged misogyny. Women had their role, men were supposed to be in charge, no to abortion, contraception, childcare; women were supposed to stay in the home and not have careers… That was the view to which we contributed a huge impetus.” Another focus was Schaeffer’s frustration with the culture of popular evangelicalism that he was raised in. He mentions by name Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and James Dobson, and alleges, “All these luminary pastor-leader evangelicals were so uncharitable and such unkind people and such fraudulent folks in the way they dealt with people, raised money, and so forth.” It was their way to gain money, power and influence.Regarding his upbringing, he adds that he is “someone who comes out of a domineering, testosterone-driven background, a male raised to be an asshole by divine right because my Reformed theology demanded that I be ‘head of the home.

I don't believe it would be all that difficult to demonstrate that ordaining women skews theology. Not always in a leftward direction, mind you. But always away from Scripture. I am not sure that women teaching or women preaching does the same thing. That would be much more difficult to quantify. Besides, some women these days are holding the line far better than their male counterparts. We DO have slippage both to the left and to the right. We have failure of leadership on every side of every issue. Holy Post always skews too far to the left. McCaulley has a track record, and he clearly trends too far left, as well. On the other hand, he is quite lucid and more balanced than many on his side of things.

1 Thessalonians chapter 4 for the Lord himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout with the voice of the Archangel and with the Trump of God and the dead in Christ shall rise first, then we which are alive and remain, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and so shall we ever be with the Lord. We are going to be at the marriage supper of the lamb with our groom Jesus while the tribulation is going on here on earth. The tribulation is God giving another chance to his creation to surrender to him and have eternity with him. At the end of the seven years, we will come back with Jesus to this earth and he will set up and establish his kingdom. He is preparing us now to worship and serve him. That is what he created us for. He will rule on this earth for a thousand years, then the great white throne, judgment of all. if we have accepted the free gift of salvation, Jesus paid our debt in full by grace we are saved through faith not of ourselves then we will spend our eternity with God. If we rejected Christ, then we will spend eternity separated from him. Jesus is the way the truth and the life.
