I have a question. I’m working with a song that has a lot of dynamic changes. For example, different drums are used in different sections. Different instrumentation and pads on different verses. Even different vocals and chops. In this setting, would it still be best to categorize / group according to drums, bass, mids, and vocals? Or do you think it might make more sense to almost categorize according to section with those groups as sub groups within the section? Example: VERSE 1 GROUP (sub group of bass, mid, drums, vox) and then CHORUS (bass, mid, drums, vox)? I noticed this feels more organized to my brain but it obviously takes longer since I’m having to mix each individual section with their sub groups accordingly. Yet on the flip side, if I have ONLY the broad group stacks of bass, drums, mids, vox - I run into the issue of mixing the drums for verse 1 but then those general group effects applied don’t translate well to the drums in the chorus… and so on… does that make sense? What are your thoughts on this? 🤔

I have a pair of studio monitors plugged into a power strip (something from Walmart). When I shut them down before everything else I'll sometimes get a pop from one of the monitors. Will having a power conditioner for the monitors eliminate the noise. Note: the current outlet has 2 one strip for the monitors, and the other has a separate strip for tv, lamp, etc. Thanks in advance.

the Sub is not a crossover on a Dolby Digital set up, and the Sub does work independantly on consumer devices such as apple earbuds...

It is actually a simple question to answer. No need for an external preamp. And what does "a good microphone preamp" mean? Color? No color? Ask engineers from 30 years ago and they will say no color. Now it is the opposite Do you want an external preamp? Sure, why not, this can be interesting and useful. But do you need? No.

Hey, nice channel. I am having trouble including the meta data when I render out my ADM files. The option to "apply program level meta-data" is greyed out and when I load the ADM file into a new session, the audio is fine but the object meta-data is missing. Any idea why that would be?

Brother, love ya, but these are literally just power strips. Don't pay more than 20 bucks for one.... To obtain a true isolation strip, you will need to spend north of 1k (contains a transformer, etc). So, you do need to break the bank for true "conditioning" which is actually just isolation.

anything under 10w i've found is not suitable for gigging. everything else is fair game, especially if there's no need for loud clean sounds. shout out to fender blues junior and marshall sc20. both are very loud for their wattage.

Thanks, I really needed to hear this. I already spend way too much time building absorbers before even setting up my speakers. Fortunately, it's all on gobos, so I can move everything out. Then, I will try all positions and THEN place the treatment. I think I have been going about this the wrong way. Thanks for the video!!!

This is a GREAT…” moment of clarity”… but it’s all based on “failure”… “Is it live or is it Memorex…”… the old guys know what I just said… 40 years ago, I and a Buddy went to a higher end audio store in College Park Maryland, “Audio Associates” The vibe was VERY “ we don’t work on commission” relaxed… We loved being there.. great conversation about bands , music and hardware… but no sales “pressure”… After a few moments, we went down stairs to “audition” a pair of Yamaha NS1000 speakers. We were already blown away by the grace and competence of the sales people… they spoke well, sounded like they knew their products… and we felt ZERO pressure..like these people loved their jobs.. So we are downstairs…and I happened to be looking away at something when… GODDAMN…the salesperson is playing a Sax, so we can “A/B”… it against an audio sample… (Ps…at the time I was a full time musician playing with horn sections three or four times per week..AND I was a piano tuner… so I might have qualified as an expert witness in court)… So I turn around…. AND ITS THE NS1000 speakers…!!!… perfectly EQ’d in the room.. at the perfect volume to sound like a live sax… and the imaging…. Have I said…GODDAMN yet..? I was literally fooled… by these speakers , with a perfect audio source , EQ’d in this perfect room…. So to say…. After the player, the guitar and then the room… the mike changes the sound… and then the pre-amp changes the sound…and then the…. HELL NO… I heard ( back when I could really hear)…. I heard perfect reproduction… So start the discussion over…. Start with a perfect “source - to - eardrums” production… Then move downward from there… I …personally heard it. Ok..fine… the NS1000s may not do EVERYTHING as well as they matched the solo tenor sax…. Let’s say 90db in a 15’x15’ acoustically treated room.. Reproducing the Count Basie Band, or Led Zep, or the huge room sound of Beethoven or Copeland…. There may have been a loss that “exposed” them But no…. I heard zero coloration…. None… So it can be done… and that was in 1984ish. My buddy still has the NS1000’s and a pair of NS 10’s I settled for AR3a, Smaller Advents… and Yamaha HS8’s… We are both too old to keep chasing hardware and perfection and I wear hearing aids.. So we just appreciate great music from very good transmission / sources… received by failing humans. Fanfare for the Common Man is one of my FAVORITE test tones… because 1) there is a LOT of space so one can “listen” to the room as the sound is decaying.. it’s the stuff that you don’t hear… that you hear..that makes the difference… And 2) Copeland built powerful dissonances in his brass and low brass. When a GREAT horn section is …IN….TUNE… a great recording /production allows you to hear the dissonances beating against each other with clarity otherwise quickly lost in lesser audio production.. ( you tube audio SUX… for REALLY hearing acoustic nuance).. And “ Beating Against each other” is real as it refers to different pitches .. either in tune with each other or not…. And notes / intervals that DONT “work well together”… Absolutely MAKING the tension… you…can…hear… the clash… The better the players execute ( in tune)… and the better the recording reproduction… THE…BETTER… ..the more delicious… the dissonance can be… yes really.

If you have two buses on one audio track, would you add both buses as tracks, and create the summing stacks with all three as usual? Sorry if that's confusing!

Hey man, dope video…but I was wondering how you do this process in just Logic alone? I’m think I do have MainStage installed on my MacBook but I honestly have no experience with it, only Logic…and also I’m not too sure how well my computer would do running both programs at once tbh 😅 I’m gonna give this method a try later today or tomorrow, but would definitely be interested in that other video about prepping everything/doing everything in Logic as you had mentioned…if I understood correctly 😅

Hey dude, I just subbed after watching 2 of your videos regarding mic preamps (thanks for those) and was quite surprised to see the size of your following wasn't much bigger! I think your tone and delivery is great, very chilled, trustworthy and down to earth (and clearly knowledgeable). Camera quality/lighting/colour looks nice too. I'd say trust your gut for creative direction/editing and also trust your followers to support it. Nothing wrong with positive changes! Hope the back feels better and good luck 👍

I use a vox ac10 for church where I can’t be too loud, and go stereo with dsl40 into a 212cab for band rehearsals (at my house) and, determine how much to bring with me for gigs based on the gigs scenario. Outdoor, might bring both amps and cab, or just one amp.
