Houses of Peace by Joshua Bornfield PART 1 I. Temporary shelters Light and darkness, night and day. We marvel at the mystery of the stars. Moon and sky, sand and sea. We marvel at the mystery of the sun. Twilight, high noon, dusk and dawn. Though we are mortal, we are creation’s crown. Flesh and bone, steel and stone. We dwell in fragile temporary shelters. - Rabbi Jules Harlow II. Market day It was market-day. The children were playing war. The women were choosing vegetables, eggs, poultry, potatoes. The selection was a bit limited, as it was wartime. It was market-day. Half-past-four in the afternoon. The children were playing was when suddenly, from heaven, where, they say, come angels and come birds, a shower of fire came pouring down, heaven was hell, the order was turned on its head. Three hours like an eternity and the game was over. The children played no more at war: the war had ended them. (Now all had the same thoughts, for all the dead think alike. And so began the great uniformity.) One thousand six hundred fifty-four dead and eight hundred eighty-nine wounded. (What a feat, ladies and gentlemen, what a feat! Let the world pattern itself after this model, now that it knows what lies ahead. Didn’t condors inhabit the Andes? Why did they contradict themselves and come here?) And the tree there, in the very center, wounded also but still standing. (But not resurrected yet!) - Josep Palau i Fabre, trans. Joshua Bornfield N.B. parentheses mark text omitted in this setting III. Meditation, Song of the Birds PART 2 IV. Evening darkness, morning dawn Grant steadfast love, compassion, grace. Sustain us, Lord, our origin is dust. Splendor, mercy, majesty, love endure. We are but little lower than the angels. Resplendent skies, sunset, sunrise. The grandeur of creation lifts our lives. Evening darkness, morning dawn. Renew our lives as you renew all time. - Rabbi Jules Harlow V. שׂמחה (Joy) Light shines upon the righteous and joy streams into their heart. ;אוֹר זֻרע לצּדּיק וּל ישֵׁרי-ֵלב שׂמחה - Psalm 97:11, trans. Joshua Bornfield VI. Me’n vaig amunt, car per la llum l’ànima tinc endiumenjada. ********* The light passes through hidden streets and enters the heart of the shadow: because the light cannot be contained, it ignites all it touches with fever. And the light enters into me and I burn through the eyes and out of them. Pale violins join in as the dawn celebrates peace. If ever I am lost, it will be the light that finds me in the searching. The light looks at everything and winks at it with magic. I arise, golden with light as my soul becomes the sun. - "Passa la llum per amagats camins (A JOAN TRIADÚ)," Josep Palau i Fabre, trans. Joshua Bornfield, Elisabet Pujadas

from dave an Edward Polochick fast tempo Messiah fan- i want- having sung w the Balto Symphony Chorus) [email protected] no one responds to these posts? much good here is said- BUT "unbelievable mysticism"? "austrians make love better than war" please try to avoid pablumic cliches?-at one pt Jennings is quoted- thank u-Jonathan- SLOW DOWN- Jonathan adds so much here- great to have him in B more- please credit sources- quotes from Handel as to hedonistic society- Jonathan's notes re this Messiah should be printed in every program- Jonathan's scholarship is impressive- Jonathan yr praise of the slow tempo is wrong- cymbals? Beecham's defense? give it to the Mormon Tabernbackle -

It is the first time that Handel Messiah has felt like a memorial concert. It made me tearful thinking about those who succumbed to the virus all over the world. Seeing the singers struggling under masks was so heart-wrenching, but the heavenly voices would still comfort His/Her people everywhere from the street of Baltimore!!! Thank you so much for offering this amazing performance online. The sound mixing and video editing were also top notch!

the bass part needed to be a bit stronger here but other than that good attention to dynamics with passion and musicality throughout! Good performance! But the bass line needs to be secured a bit more. I know this very well and there are parts where some of the dissonances are just something when sung well, but i didn't here them in this recording as well as they could have been sung.
