I'm sorry, but Anne simply doesn't understand movies. And disappointingly none of you mentioned 'I hope you come back some day' scene. But overall a satisfactory review. Thanks.

Did you think the 1984 version did justice to the book ? 🤔. I've seen the Tyrone Power /Gene Tierney film , and found it believable and memorable. The Bill Murray one , from what can gather from brief trailers, looks good....🤔😊 I like to compare different presentations . Can quite understand why Bill wanted not to be pigeon - holed in Ghostbusters style comedy... 🇬🇧😊🇺🇲📽️📖🦉🇬🇧

I feel like the 1984 version did justice to the story. It's a little different in its narrative approach, but it kept the essence and the time period (and all that is significant about it) intact. Thanks for the comment!

That was a beutiful film, in a time rich of different, great movies. Music, characters & actors, dialogue, etc. No shits given, they did what they felt was right for this short story and they hit just the right tone. Hopefully a time like this will return for modern film in the future

Fantastic review!!! Superman is still my favourite superhero film of all time and really one of my fave films in general. Reeve absolutely captured the humility of Clark, the humanity of Superman, and the empathy of both. No other Superman actor since has conveyed these qualities (however Tyler Hoechlin got the closest)

Great review. While I think Superman '78 is very much a product of its time at this point, it still has several scenes of real, lasting impact and a stereophonic masterpiece of a soundtrack. I think the first 40 or so minutes are the best. It tells the origin as well as anyone probably will.

What an excellent review of this underrated and forgotten classic. I've always been irritated that the Will Smith/Martin Lawrence franchise with the same title eclipsed a movie that has haunted me (in a good way) for decades. Even my 80's Spotify playlist features a reminder of this film, as the Little River Band "Man on Your Mind" song is the one playing on Viking's repaired "boom box" (pun intended!) in a pivotal scene. Thanks for talking about why this film is worth watching!
@VisuallyHidden

No problem! Thanks for the comment. I also hate that I have to distinguish this film as "Bad Boys from 1983 with Sean Penn," so people know that I am not talking about the Smith/Lawrence franchise. "Superstar" by T-Connection (when Tweety gets out) is a good one too!

I remember this movie well. I was around 13 or 14 or 15 (had to wait on HBO) by the time I saw it. I was such a small kid and it scared the shit out of me how much bigger and tougher the inmates were. The young black boy getting raped and then killed REALLY shook me up. The soda cans in the pillow case was a very cool tactic. The fight at the end was believable. It showed that neither boy was more experienced at fighting than the other.

It's a little ironic that the film would be saved by hippies. I mean the film predated the psychedelic era and the creators inadvertently (maybe not?) produced something that seemed pretty psychedelic in nature. You were combining (proto-)psychedelia with classical music. And once it got re-released in 1969, it was no wonder why the film became a favorite with the counterculture.
