31:33 personally I didn’t understood that Elphaba and Nessa’s disabilities were a product of infidelity rather than drug addiction. First the magical green elixir and later the pinlobe flowers Malena chewed all day to stay sedated. For me it makes a lot of sense.

Honestly love the question time, I'm having a great time making up conspiracy theories to answer them 😂😅 Like: "why doesn't the pacific fit together" and "why don't the rocks fit": Atlantis duh. It also didn't sink but magically transformed into water. Which answers "where does the water come from" withour creating new matter and this sudden appearance of water first created the shallow seas and then as the earth grew bigger stretched out over more area lowering sea levels and leading to us finding ocean fossils on dry land. I'm really rocking this as you can see 😅 And since I'm expecting this question: Of course there is magic as proven by the popular documentary "The Wizards of Waverly Place". I'm still working on the "why" and "how" using magic again seems lazy so I'm currently leaning towards aliens.

There's a show in the UK called "I'm a celebrity get me out of here" which is where they take a group of celebrities to a forest/jungle and have them compete in challenges such as eating unpleasant things, putting their head in a tank of insects, etc. and then the public vote to vote someone off (I think but I've never actually watched it so I am not certain). The winner then gets a lot of money. It's outrageous and the title eludes to the fact that the challenges basically try and push the celebrities past breaking point until they ask to leave.

As an ADHD/autistic college student, I find your sharing your process so helpful. You make great content and the end product is intimidating for me to consider doing something similar so far as a finished project goes. This makes presentations feel much more doable for me. Thanks, Sydney!

*snaps until my fingers bleed* this is such a good vid 🥹 thank you for taking the time to make it ♥️ 🙌🏻 💙 💖 💜🏴‍☠️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🏳🏴🚩 i think this can be explored more with racial and class identies as well too. As for me, I don't really give af if I ever get diagnosed autistic cuz i know this society never wanted me anyways. To put it unapologetically *shrugs* but it's so validating to know that ppl are just now starting to see the intersections that white supremacy ableism and eugenics have kept hidden from us all.

I haven't actually read any Austen yet 😮 But I've seen the 1996 movie version of Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow. It was kind of a favourite movie of mine for a bit. Then I watched the BBC miniseries from 2009 (with Romola Garai as Emma Woodhouse), and I thought it was a lot clearer and put more emphasis on Harriet's much different social standing. And, you know, I've watched Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but that's a pure popcorn flick - something I'd stop on if I'm bored on a Saturday afternoon and it happened to be playing on TV. I've been meaning to read both Austen and the Bronte sisters for ages, but I sidetracked reading other stuff. I am reading an Emma retelling set in modern-day India (Polite Society by Mahesh Rao), but it's a bit of a slog to get through and my library books (The Color of Sound, a middle grade book about a 12yo violin prodigy with synesthesia who decides to go on a hiatus from playing; and the second omnibus of One Piece because PIRATES, my OG special interest, lol) are holding my interest more.

Disclaimer that I'm only in the beginning, but caught a bit of misinformation I wanted to kindly correct. Complex tics aren't required to meet the diagnostic criteria for Tourette's. Any tics for longer than a year would qualify you for some kind of chronic tic disorder and it's the number and types of tics that differentiate them. They are common among people with other conditions, but only because they're common comorbid conditions, not symptoms of those other conditions if that makes any sense. Some of the DSM and medical info online is worded a bit confusingly, but I've spoken to multiple professionals about this to make sure I was understanding it right. This is my special interest basically, so I hope this doesn't come across as argumentative, but I'm really happy to answer any questions or clarify anything if this is still confusing.

Can anyone tell me why sia made "music" in the first place if she had no personal connection to it? To me, it looks like a piece of art made with love and care, and depicting a truly tragic story, in a creative and beautiful way. I have not read much, but the one article i did, criticized her for having a non autistic actor, and also the scene where the guy "covers her with love" to prevent her from hurting herself during an emotional episode. Im just confused...why would she put so much effort into making a giant piece of art, if either she herself, or someone she loved, didnt have autism (or a connection to)? Am i to assume she made it from a place of complete ignorance? My impression of sia is that shes incredibly talented - and many gifted artists likely do have unique brains that cause them to see the world in unique ways - hence the magic of their art. I am not clear on why she was accused, as if she commited a crime? Perhaps she could have made some different choices...but accusing her of complete ignorance, or malicious intent, seems very extreme and...well...insensitive. Hate breeds hate - i am super confused by this whole thing, towards an artist whos talent i really admire.

And btw if she brought up attachment in an interview it's probably based on the narrative of the film and that attachment trauma (aka junkie mom) can lead to addiction - and or could have had an impact on the development of both girls in the movie (attachment is a developmental theory of trauma - parental absence due to addiction is inherently traumatic and influences everything from brain development to personality). Many of the most influential psychologists and neurobiologists today believe that attachment is the theory that explains...all of development and health - ie nervous system, regulation...Basically what our parents teach us or fail to teach us...on a biological level...about emotions has a massive impact on our health in the global sense of the word).

Sounds like the author wrote it with an assumption that the real phrase would be obvious to everyone. I would love to see it play out that he thinks they are all just being silly and saying random nonsense, where each time he hears it he interprets it differently depending on the speaker (maybe even one time thinking it's something not nice) but a keen reader will find that there's an underlying similarity, until we find out in the end that everyone was actually saying the same kind phrase (something like I love you or i like your outfit) the whole time. (in addition to the rest of the story beats you mentioned of course) But yeah I don't know, this is just where my brain went with it. But as it is, I would probably say it could be something like "Hey bestie?" or something like that. 🤷🏻

Fantastic analysis. I recently saw a production of “Next to Normal” after watching this video and found myself agreeing with much of what is said here. Dan actually felt like the protagonist to me, but his actions are so selfish that it was hard to sympathize with him. The lack of character depth only aggravated his unlikability. Diana especially felt like a narrative prosthesis (she studied architecture, too, but there’s nothing about that in the show). The psychological elements of the show also felt very, “And Now We Educate!” and forced. The music is incredible, but the show already feels dated to me. Radical take, but I wonder if this show was reset to the 1990s or early 2000s, would the dated medical talk feel more natural? It wouldn’t solve the narrative issues with the show, but having it clearly take place in the past might add a comfortable distance that makes it easier to swallow.

Hi Sydney, I am a newly qualified CBT Therapist and can totally empathise with what you are saying. I understand how invalidating it must be to be told your thoughts are "irrational". I feel like the field is SLOWLY evolving as we begin to become more educated regarding Autism/ADHD. I personally take a different approach if I realise someone is on the spectrum (My partner and half my family are autistic so I can usually tell) and would take a more person centred approach. Thank you for your educational videos I really loved how you explained the best way to cope would be to remove self from situation - Have nice sensory input - Cool down and then process the situation and handle on your own - This information is VITAL that people like me learn and understand so we aren't making people worse when they are at their most vulnerable.

As a student, I always got stuck during classes and felt like I wasn’t keeping up with my classmates. I’d overthink the meaning of a single phrase for too long, and that became the biggest obstacle in my way to a better life. Because of my inability to process words and numbers as fast as my peers, I avoided math my whole life, and now I don’t know if I can ever live up to my potential and get the degree that’s always resonated with me since it’s too late to study math

I'll be honest, as someone part of Gen Z (born in 2006), and who possibly thinks they have DID. This video helped us a lot, we ALWAYS think we're faking because of all the videos on KZfaq plus our ex fakeclaiming us for faking DID, this video has helped us realize that we aren't faking, like this has helped us realize that if a disorder is considered rare, people will deny people have it. I have noticed a lot of kids who are self-diagnosed or aren't diagnosed get most of that hate, which sucks because we were self diagnosed at one point, again thank you for making this video, this has helped us a lot! -Byte & Co.

I’m so proud of my KZfaq algorithm for serving this up to me! I’ve been talking about this for years. I always feel a little bit like a wet blanket telling my friends why reality tv isn’t ethical and why I don’t want to watch it, but as a researcher, witnessing everything that happens on these shows is so uncomfortable and really outrageous. The jury duty one was especially bad. Thanks for the video!

This link is to a channel of a medical practitioner, not a therapist. It may be useful. He does some Autism stuff on his channel. I keep his channel in my resources for serving clients on the spectrum: www.youtube.com/@NeurodivergentDoctor I love what you do, and if I find a Therapist who broadcasts and has ASD hopefully I'll remember to post here! You are maybe my favorite Channel devoted to ASD related things on KZfaq. Thank you! Oh, and one reason why there may be fewer ASD diagnosed therapists is the alexithymia issue (Even youtube autocorrect doesn't know the word!) If it's hard to read emotions that can be an obstacle in the work (although not an impassible barrier), but it gets more complicated when you consider autistic burnout combined with compassion fatigue and what that would do to a person. (Ouch! that sounds hard!) I have ADHD and have never screened for co-occurring Autism. But Just with ADHD as a neurodivergence, I have had my share of challenges, and run my practice in a very specific way to meet my needs. Other therapists I know see many more clients than me and make a lot more money. But I get lots of compliments for my work. Anyway, hope that helps! And thanks again. I really appreciate you!

I recommend the book Deaf Utopia by Nyle DiMarco because he talks about his experience on America’s Next Top Model and the “reality” TV experience he had on it! Also, have you ever heard of I Wanna Marry "Harry"? It was a TV show kind of like The Bachelor about women who were told they were going to try competing to be with THE Prince Harry. What they didn’t realize is he wasn’t Prince Harry, but a guy who just looked exactly like him. The first episode actually has him express that he was worried the women would only be attracted to him because of his “money” and not who he was as a person. So the women were being villainized for being gold diggers even though he and the show runners were lying to them the whole time. They even had a THERAPIST come on and tell one of the contestants who was skeptical that she was crazy and that he actually was the real Prince Harry. So obviously, consent and information about what the contestants were getting into was thrown out the window for that show.

I watched the original Korean drama that it was based on, and while the original had problems (i.e. language used was very outdated, and almost everyone treated Park Shion horribly), the US version was so much worse, and I only watched one episode. The way his savantism was handled in the original was more realistical, imho. (Instead of it being all "ooh, shiny interactive graphics just like Minority Report", he recalls pages of his medical textbooks and has a star rating of how important a medical condition is.) Oops, sorry for the infodump 😂
