I do a general IT studie I have to say that Security is one of the easiest things I had. But I only got to learn how to use Nmap MBSA Security Onion and how to detect fake emails and videos's. I want maybe to get specialised into the security. I don't know if it's just a small fraction of what you have to know to be a Proffesional Security analyst or that it is a good basic. Can someone tell on what kind of level my security knowledge is?

Here in the U.S. having a bachelors is required for many tech jobs, especially for more senior positions. Further, the structure and guidance of a typically college course can be much better for learning than a self-guided route. Just gotta find the right school.

Well said brother. What started my quest for knowledge began when I was ten. It was a book my 6th great grand father wrote called “Reason:the only oracle of man”. In it, he talks about the important of critical thinking and how the church has subverted the ability to critically thing; among many other topics. It was a book that changed my way of thinking and began the quest of seeking knowledge. What started it for you?

One thing about the certifications though, do those prices include study materials/course content to learn the information, or is it just the exam fees to only take the exam itself? Because that is pretty important to consider too. I know even self-paced non-university courses can end up costing thousands, like CEH for example...
@DiscJokeyDarkSignsКүн бұрын
Google Cybersecurity has first 7 days for free. After that I think it becomes a monthly subscription of 49$ and you pay no extra fees for the certification. For CompTIA though I think it's a bit complex, I know they have different plans with a live tutor which is about 4000$ and just the exam passes with self-paced study guides, which are about 300$.

@TechwithJono4 күн бұрын
Hey there! CS is a good degree so if you've already started then it's better to just finish it. Cybersecurity can be picked up through self study or online courses to fill in the gaps.

When people make this argument they look too near sighted with it. The reason you should do a degree is not because it is going to help you get that first job more than Certifications. The reason you do the degree is because 15-20 years down the line, the roles you are going to be competing for are going to be against people with Master's or higher levels of education. So you should go ahead and knock out the bachelor's.
@ultravioletiris62415 күн бұрын
More like 3 years down the line for some people
@TechwithJono5 күн бұрын
This is false on so many reasons. Getting certs or degree IS the reason for getting your first job. Otherwise, what is the point? As someone works 15-20 years down the line, do you think it's more important to have a degree listed on your CV, or the projects and experiences you have? Unless your role requires a master's or Phd, none of this matter once you are over 5 years in the industry.
@brandonpaddock53775 күн бұрын
@@TechwithJono First, you aren't understanding what I said. I'm saying you are correct in that a degree doesn't really matter for a first job, You can get one with whatever route you go. But that thought process is near sighted and not long term. Second, your wrong. Those people that you are competing against have those experiences plus higher level education. If you want senior level positions that pay, you better have a Master's degree. Pretty much everyone I know in higher positions than just an analyst/engineer have a Master's degree. There is a reason in literally every job field people on average make more money with every degree they get. Have fun trying to be a CISO or pretty much any type of managerial job in the field without having at least a Master's degree.

I gave up on cybersecurity completely. A year ago when i had 7 different certificates done, some internships, i decided to look for jobs and man, the amount of times i never got a call back or rejection, just made me realize that its not even possible anymore, so I went back to trucking instead
@TechwithJono5 күн бұрын
Unfortunately that happens too. Luck definitely plays a part in this, but have you pursued in side projects besides getting certificates only?
@K20Alfonzo5 күн бұрын
@@TechwithJono i did 3 side projects. Presented on my applications, and i had a website too, but didn’t work. That was why i completely gave up and went back to trucking and made a company, but hey, i made $32,627 last month. Better than a IT Help Desk job pay.

For example, incidents: how many incidents are being received per month How many incidents are considered as critical, medium or low. Where are the incidents are coming from.

Whilst what he said is true for the most part, I was able to learn a lot off of my bachelor's degree in college. I learnt a good chunk of the CompTIA Security+ content from my degree. Of course, it's a much more expensive way to learn stuff (comptia study notes can be found for as little as 10 dollars) but at the same time it gives me a degree (which is really valuable in the industry even if it seems pointless) and something which is much more important - Motivation from like minded individuals. I know this sounds childish and something that doesn't matter at all, but personally I saw my friends taking an initiative to learn more outside the degree by self studying and referring videos. Of course, if you're really determined enough, no external force is needed for you to achieve your goal. Just seeing them learn a lot made me feel left out and I started getting into my own headspace to study cybersecurity. We would often have a weekly discord call during the weekends to discuss anything new we learnt (like a new tool or a new resource) and share it amongst one another to help each other out. Of course it's not because of the degree that I was able to meet such talented and motivated individuals, but I believe a part of the reason I try to put in effort to study for cybersecurity is because of them. I know this wouldn't work for everyone but I just felt like sharing my own personal story.
