The D40-90 had a different engine, probably to account for the AC unit that would sap some performance

The 6V-71 may have been a workhorse, but the agencies know they have only so long before they would need a much more powerful engine. The subsequent 1991-92 Orion V diesels (6640-6745) used the 6V-92TA engine; these were the only new TTC buses to do so. They originally used ZF ECOMAT transmissions, but were changed to Allison B400Rs after logging around 250,000 miles.

Now part of the collection of Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, ME. The Detroit 8V-71 engine used here was transplanted from a former COTA (Central Ohio Transit Authority) 1982 Grumman Flxible Metro 40102-8 unit 8165, which under HSR became 8251.

Almost identical powertrain as used in New Jersey Transit's 1994 Flxible Metros (1750-1965, 1976 and 3700-3794).

@@newflyerindustriesfan2216 Mississauga Transit 5034 (ex-OC Transpo 8208) which was given to Riverside, California and was preversed as a movie bus was scrapped in 2014 and HSR 518203 is still at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Maine.

Can’t believe GM Fishbowl outlived everything. I guess they were easier to maintain than newer busses which had AC and other extra tech things to go wrong.

I was thinking about maybe the HSR GM Artic next! It was one of four transit systems in Ontario to operate them as part of the pilot project with the government.

There was one Orion I 01.508 Mississauga ran that had the Detroit Diesel 6V-92TA and Voith D863: it was 8610, a 1984 Orion demo bus that became part of the Mississauga fleet in 1987. Mississauga also had one 1990 Orion V 05.501 with this same powertrain: 9020. Both of these sounded like AC (Alameda-Contra Costa) Transit's Gillig Phantoms (the 1469, 2600, 2700 and 2800 series).

T-drive layout -- hence you would have wanted them to have the HTB-748s instead. St. Albert did swap out the ZF 4HP-600s in their D60HFs to Allison B500Rs later.
