In Vermont, you can't sell anything for more than the sticker price. When the Godfather trilogy was first released on DVD it was about $125. I was at a Blockbuster and someone marked them at $19.99. I got to the front and they tried to charge me $125. I explained that the law said they had to. They called the manager and he angrily told them to sell me one and yank the others off the shelf

By law they can only charge posted price. Everything I get is new since there are no video shops anywhere near me

This is just basic common sense business practices. Unfortunately in late stage capitalism the attitude seems to be “fuck the customer, fuck my employees, I want my money!”

Gonna get roasted but this is one of the reasons i prefer digital media . Yes i know physical is always cheaper but i dont have alot of stores near me and just some of the prices for games are just a kick in the nuts . Luckily never had a store trip over opening a case but the stores that are local to me are smart and dont keep discs in the cases

It's awkward for them to put you in a position where it says 20 on the package and they tell you it's really 30? It's awkward for you to confront them and give them back with their giving you? So they're supposed to get away with something and you're not supposed to just reflect it directly back on them or just tell them a simple no thank you? That's awkward!? Come on people!

That first one is illegal in the states. Dollar General is being investing by the government for saying one price on the sticker but the register is higher. That is illegal.

Prices should only be adjusted down. If they paid $10, ok mark it up with your profit, then sell it. Never reprice higher, that is bs greedy crap. If price drops too low to sell at your mark up, then can offer discount to interested customers.

If its priced as $20 on the sticker on the bluray then that’s what you pay. Anything other than that, walk out 🤷🏻‍♂️ simple, not awkward

Not sure if this would work but your comment about the sharpies / permanent markers is I know that if you write with a permanent marker on a dry erase board the way to get that off is to write over it with the dry erase marker then it will wipe off just like the dry erase marker but not sure if it would also apply to other materials or not like DVD cases.

The dumbest thing I ever saw was a game store, when the game was new, selling doa ultimate as two different full priced games for the two discs to the actual game…

I had an incident at Gamestop years ago when i bought a used game and asked for a case. I'd take a blank case, or even a CD case, but the employee grabbed a case with "NEW" on the front. I had an issue with the game and tried to return it a few days later. New employee says its new, it can't have issues, but reluctantly gave me an exchange

The last local video store in my area closed this last summer. The guy was having a go out of business sale I figured cool I'd go pick out some new movies. Anything common he was selling for $9.99. previously viewed copies of DVDs for $9.99 movies that I can get at the local pawn shop for a dollar. I started going through his obscure foreign stuff brought a disc up front and like you said he looked it up on eBay and he told me it would be 15 bucks. I begrudgingly bought it and never went back. Judging from the pictures I saw he still had tons and tons of product when he locked his doors. Most of the stuff that he had was common stuff that most of us collectors would have owned but if you would have put a buck or two a piece on those DVDs people would have come in there and bought them for their families to watch to keep up at the cabin whatever but instead he ended up locking his doors with a shit ton of product.

I don't have a 4K player because I don't have the screen for it. Hypothetically, I'd probably re-buy a few of my favourite movies on 4K for features not on the regular Blu-Ray versions (i.e. i.e. Wayne Campbell playing the first four notes of "Stairway to Heaven" where the 4K is the first home video version to have the unaltered audio from the theatrical release) but I think I'd only want to buy 4Ks that are straight transfers of film sources to avoid AI hallucinations as seen in some digitally-enhanced 4K transfers like True Lies and Aliens.

I lave if there’s no price tag 0:55 technically a store once it has priced something must sell it at the price marked according to u.S. consumer law. Thats what i tell them when it’s priced. If they pull out the phone i almost always tell them no I always hated the blockbuster video full disc sticker! What madness made that a choice someone chose!?

When I worked at an independent games shop, we kept all the discs/carts behind the counter (because shoplifting was a bit of an issue) but we always showed the customer the disc or cart before they bought a thing, without hesitation. If we put something on the shelf, and on eBay it was a tenner more or something, it was sold for the shelf price - you can always drop prices (we regularly gave customers deals for multiple purchases) but NEVER put prices up. And we dropped prices based on the condition of the box or media. Price stickers were small and easy to remove too. None of this is difficult, reputational damage is a thing, and customers notice if you try to pull shady crap. Be friendly, don't crap on customers, they're the reason you're in business.

As a game collector if i pick something up and they look it up on pricecharting or ebay at the counter I don't buy it and won't go back to that store. I'm not interested in a place that wants to nickle and dime me.

In the UK, it's illegal to try and charge more than the sticker price on an item. Surprised that it's allowed over there.

Im relieved to find that my little vendor market shop doesn’t do any of these. I generally don’t go back and reprice and so if a customer gets a deal, AWESOME! I might every now and again check a few but its rarely worth the effort. One thing i do with most of our stock of games and movies is put them in bags. It looks nice and the games are kept cleaner and you get clean surfaces to place stickers without damaging the case.. I certainly don’t mind someone wanting to check a case, but just bring them to the front and do so with oversight. Shrink is real but I’m not a monster.

I made a big order from Vinegar Syndrome on the Summer Subscriber Sale. I ordered 40 movies from them in 6 orders from the week combined order shipping so it may be well over a month before they ship it to me. I might need a forklift to get the box off the ground lol.

Very unlikely that I go to stores nowadays. The rare times I buy new movies, it's online. Otherwise, it's thrift shops and swap meets. Store prices are ridiculous.

There was a shop near me that would shrink wrap used DVDs. I think Moviestop did that as well. I didn’t have a problem with that but it sucked when I buy a dvd and it turned out to be a library copy that had stickers directly on the front of the disc and in the booklet.

I think that the biggest problem with 4k UHD is the poor transfers. Many of them just use the 1080p blu ray as the source, AI upscale it to 4k, creating lots of weird and distorted artifacts that weren't originally there on film. The result is smooth, waxy faces and zombie background people. This also happens on some Blu Rays such as Predator 1987 Ultimate Hunter Editition. Proper transfers that include film grain from older movies can be superior quality, look at Lawrence of Arabia as an example of a perfect 4k UHD transfer of an older movie. Look at True Lies or Jaws 3 as examples of bad UHD transfers.

I purged my childhood GBA, Gamecube, & Wii collection. Pretty much all the 1st party bangers on those systems. ^ I love it, I miss, but the reality is I played them to death as a kid.. I always thought I would go back to play them again yet I never did. ^ back in like 2019-2020 I put that cash into a switch, xbox one games, & 4k movies.

At the end of 2025, physical media will be a single endcap at Walmart.

Imo the best is what you can comfortably afford. It’s a long game and there’s some films I’m even perfectly fine just having a dvd for.
