A few notes on this: First of all the stepper must be set with far below it's power limit as it is very hard to turn most NEMA23 steppers by hand when they are engaged. Second the problem of lost steps and very poor speed occurs on cheap open loop stepper (meaning without a control circuit that knows whether it moved correctly). Closed loop steppers are still a little cheaper than servos, move faster and more precisely than simple steppers. Servos are basically "normal motors" with a closed loop circuit which is why they can spin a lot faster than steppers but offer less holding torque (they can only correct an unwanted movement but not told a position without some slack). What does that mean what's the benefit of each system? If you need fast movement (above 600-1000rpm) use a servo. If you don't need fast movement but need to hold a position with high torque and no wiggle at all then maybe a closed loop stepper is an affordable option. That said modern servos are great and in most applications they do a superb job while being cheap enough to skip cheap steppers.

That's a good summary. And whichever you use they're sure a lot easier to work with these days as there are so many good off the shelf controllers. I was never an EE major but I took a few courses for fun while working on my CS major and I still have math nightmares about second order controllers. (I was a big fan of bang-bang myself, but it is hard on motors ;)

@@xlerb2286 Configuring them all by yourself is far from easy. I very very rarely feel motivated to invest a lot of time in such stuff when building something so I totally agree with what you said about of the shelf controllers. I enjoy integrated servos (those 180w china ones) they are great for setting something up fast and just cost around 100usd. But there are so many good and easy solutions now that require very littel knowledge and fit a lot of applications which is why some of the old rules when to choose which aren't mandatory anymore, I guess.

@@vanOverload We are good at using technology to patch over the limits of technology aren't we? I remember when steppers were in some ways toys and for any "real" application it was just a given that servos were the way to go. But for little projects where you didn't need a lot of torque again it was a given that steppers were the way to go. But with the controllers now, my goodness, as you say in many applications it no longer matters and you can hardly tell one from the other. I'm retiring pretty soon here and looking forward to playing around with some hardware again. I'm going to get reacquainted with both steppers and servos.

There are closed loop steppers which can keep track of position (the drivers do that)
