Hi everyone! Thank you so much for watching this video 🙏 after getting lots of comments that this is not an accurate illustration of dyslexia, I want to sincerely apologize if the video offended anybody. While the video may be inaccurate, my intention as a classroom teacher was to create awareness and hopefully help build empathy, compassion for students or anybody struggling with dyslexia in real life. I again apologize for any misinformation and hope the video overall benefits more than hurt anyone. Thank you for your continued support and LOVE everyone!! ❤ Koke

That isn't how it is. I have a cousin with severe dyslexia. He can color in the lines just fine. He can even read words fine a lot of the time. But letters and numbers jumble together and turn into undefined symbols to him. Things are not mirrored or scrambled, just unrecognizable.
@MathChallenge1
@MathChallenge1 5 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing your cousin’s story! We had this professional development day at school and I felt like it was such a powerful experience for me, I wanted to share it with everyone 🙏 as you mentioned, it may not be 100% accurate, but it taught me to be more compassionate towards teaching students with learning differences.

@@MathChallenge1 I appreciate that. But I wouldn't say your explanation is even 5% accurate. Things like coloring books with pictures are not unrecognizable to dyslexic folks. They see lines just fine. It's a language thing rather than a visual hindrance. A Christmas tree still looks like a Christmas tree to dyslexic people. But lingual symbols are what get messed up. It's a language thing, not an all out visual thing.

I also have dyslexia and I’m sort of like your cousin all the letters and numbers in big paragraphs just combine and I have to take a second for my mind to separate them out.

This is very similar to what I use. I was taught using new math in the 60s and 70s, but since I've always loved doing math puzzles, some of which involved subtraction, Ive learned to subtract from left to right. In each column, if top digit is smaller than bottom digit, I just add 10 to it. So middle column the problem would be 13-9. Here is the process: 537 - 294 From left to right I get: 5 - 2 = 3, but what follows 5 is smaller than what follows 2, so final result will be on less = *2* (1)3 - 9 = 4, and what follows 3 is greater than what follows 9, so we take are ok = *4* 7 - 4 = *3* Answer, from left to right: *243*

This solution only holds if you take the figure as drawn to scale, which is a dangerous habit to form as this WILL NOT be the case for the vast majority of problems. And even with that, you are doing some big hand-waving of "look these traingles look the same". It is important to be able to thoroughly explain and verify each step, and not form habits that will have to be broken later.
@danielfay8963
@danielfay8963 5 ай бұрын
His explanation is bad but his method technically doesn’t require the diagram to be to scale. The conclusion that all of the sub triangles were the same area is based on extrapolating the angles, and would hold regardless of what the drawing actually looked like.

@@danielfay8963 you can't determine congruent by angles alone, only similarity. Without knowing any side lengths of any sub triangles, this is impossible. And, you would have to show that congruence property with EACH triangle, meaning you need to find a side length for each triangle. Otherwise they are all guaranteed to be proportional, not the same.
@MathChallenge1
@MathChallenge1 5 ай бұрын
@@mattcizek8020the side length are both equal on the first set of congruence I mention. nothing is implied or “drawn to scale here” when stated that it’s a square (which I forgot to do).

I'm surprised that this is so inefficient. I thought it would be cleaner than this, given that Singapore Math has a reputation... and that you're calling this "mental." It's a lot more bookkeeping (and thus has more opportunity to introduce error) than either the one-up-one-down approach of Old Math or the "borrowing" method of New Math.
@MathChallenge1
@MathChallenge1 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your feedback! It may not be for everyone, but if you can get used to it, it’s definitely easier to subtract mentally going left to right instead of the other way around 😊🙏
