Hi! I do think that ordering can be quite seamless since you can just scan the QR code (I used WeChat) at the shops and order your food/make payment online. In fact, they don’t really do over the counter ordering However, not all shops have English translations on their menu (unless they are cafes/popular tourist/expat spots) so you may have to use an external site/app to copy/paste/translate I think it is still very much doable for a non mandarin speaker since their public transport is pretty connected It’s just a bummer that Google Maps doesn’t work there. Apple Maps is a good alternative but I mostly used local navigation apps (that has its interface in Chinese). But if all else fails … there’s Didi (a ride hailing app) that works in English and is inexpensive I’d say give it a shot! If it’s a bigger city (say, Shanghai/Beijing), I think it may not be as difficult :)

HK is definitely out cause I’m not big on HK HAHA. It feels like a more expensive, unfriendly Singapore… and Singaporeans aren’t even that friendly to begin with. I feel like service staff in HK can be quite hostile sometimes 🥺 Seoul and Shanghai are both nice, but I think the revisit-ability is pretty similar? Seoul probably wins still, cause better air quality, + there’s a lot more shopping I can do for skincare/makeup as compared to in Shanghai where I’m not familiar with the brands. Food wise I like both cuisines and I will be well fed regardless of where I go 😂

Hmm as in my preference?? Tbh I find both places charming in their own ways (not trying to be PC) Both cities are definitely re-visitable, and they offer a good mix of sight seeing/historical sights and shopping (but I think Tokyo still wins in terms of shopping) :)

Hello, yes this is my third solo trip! I really recommend trying it at least once :) I think you can start with countries that you deem “safe”/ do a shorter trip first. For me it was rly important that the place was safe for a female solo traveller + I wanted it to be somewhere I’ve not been to before I didn’t stay in hostels though, cause I’m not big on socialising and am an introvert + I like to have my own quiet space to zone out. In UK I stayed in an Airbnb with a host (female) cause I felt safer with someone around. In Australia and Shanghai, I stayed alone in an Airbnb/hotel Solo trips can be very liberating cause you can do whatever you want to, whenever you like to, without having to be mindful about others. I mean I still enjoy travelling with fam/friends, but solo trips to somewhere I’ve not been to before alone feels like a great big adventure! I hope this gives you a little courage to go for the solo trip you’ve always wanted to go for ☺️

Yes it is! I love it so much although I haven’t gotten around to using it yet. Shanghai is great for solo travelling imo! I feel safe there + it REALLY helps if you are comfortable speaking/reading Chinese WeChat also makes everything seamless? You order & pay by scanning the code at the merchant, and can even see the number of orders ahead of you to decide if you wanna order or not. I love how convenient it is!! It reminded me of Korea actually, with all the cafe spots + really nice streets and quaint stores to shop at. There’s also a lot of historical/cultural sites you can visit. Plus the food is perfect for my Asian tastebuds HAHA. Highly recommend!! Would defo go back again ☺️

Hello! Off my head a few helpful apps are; 1. WeChat: used to scan menus, order, and/or make payments. It’s honestly super convenient and seamless, and I prefer it over alipay. But I’ve heard that some people have trouble setting it up, so I have Alipay as a backup. Rmb to set up WeChat pay before you go (there’s some registration to do, and you gotta link a card) 2. Xiaohongshu (小红书): Really helpful when searching for reco on things to do/eat! However, the posts are in Chinese, so for this to be useful, it depends on your proficiency in Chinese 3. Gaodeditu (高德地图): Navigation, but it’s in Chinese. Apple Maps as an alternative work in China Lmk if you have any other questions! :)
