I am in Zone 8b, in the Pacific Northwest. I tried to raise some Jicama, but I don't think that is possible here without a greenhouse. A fellow gardener introduced me to Yacoń and I just last week planted two little seedlings that I purchased from Florida. Now I have to figure out the best way to over-winter them to get a headstart on next year's growing season. What is your favorite source for information on how to grow Yacoń and what it's nutritional requirements are?

This is the first year I've tried growing Yacon. It is struggling with our hot dry summer, here in Arizona. It likes an acidic soil pH of 6.0 to 6.5. Our soil and city water pH here is 7.5 to 8.5, so I have to check the pH often.

It says you need 5 to 6 months of warm weather to get roots. To keep the rhizomes over winter it says to put them in a brown paper bag in a cool location or just leave them in the ground covered with lots of mulch and the should come back when it gets warm enough.

Mango seed color is important. Carefully remove the husk. Watch the youtube videos about planting the seeds. Green is the best seed color. Then pink, followed by white, gray, brown, and black. Gray is not a good color. Asian or Hispanic stores often have mangos with healthier seeds.

Lancaster CA zone 8B. 4 year old tree on Nemaguard rootstock. It's one my favorite. It has rich aromatic taste and is extremely juicy. Sometimes you get lucky Sams and Costco have them for sales under the label "California Nectarine" but they don't taste good when picked too early for the supermarket. This variety makes perfect taste when fully ripened on the tree and you need to give it full sun exposure. How to tell is it has a slight give when pressed and is 100% reddish. Best when even the seed is turned red. We've been getting more heat this year so I got a 2 week earlier harvest than last year. FYI: it's 120F this whole week of July 4th. There is a catch though if you over water, you'll loose aromatic flavor while getting more watery sugar juices.
