A lot more of our actions are based in biological causes than you'd think. And that's why I like it. Because it rings through with meaning in my personal life with ADHD. I'm still debating on getting my MD and going into neuropsychiatry, but the work in that is extensive.

Me too. I've was diagnosed with ADHD when I was young, and the study of brain chemistry and psychology has always been super interesting to me. Even when I was a little girl, I would flip through my moms old nursing textbooks because just the structure of the brain and the diagram of neurotransmitters conducting signals alone caught my attention. I always want to find meaning for the things I & other people do, and I believe more of that than you'd think is based in our biology. What drives your interest?

Best advice I can give is: dont think about this stuff too much. Ik it feels like a big choice in your life that you should make sure you make the best choice, but trust me you CANT know what you want to do you actually DO stuff. You need try out things, get in the field then you will know what you want to do by mostly learning what you DONT want to do. Just make a choice and stick with it and you will find the right way. People do not find their dream job, what they're most fitted at by overthinking about it at home.

@@nataliebekoe3349 As far as I'm aware, you need to have a British Psychological Society accredited degree, which can only really be done through taking a Bsc Psychology course (that's accredited). I also think you can do a Psychology conversion masters degree as another option, before going on to specialise in neuropsychology. I recommend going on the BPS website where they show you what you need and how you can do it for each career path in psychology: careers.bps.org.uk/ let me know if this was helpful!

You do not study medicine, psychologists do not go to medical school. You'd want to major in either psychology or neuroscience. Also, you may want to consider investigating the differences between a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) and a PsyD (Doctor of Psychology), and see which one is right for you. I don't think there is a specific course track you can take for neuropsychology or clinical neuropsychology. It's my understanding there are several educational paths you can take to get there, so I highly suggest speaking with a college adviser and going online to a forum such as the Student Doctor Network and asking someone there. Also try calling universities that offer neusroscience and psychology programs, and check out their course catalogs.

you would only study medicine if you wanted to be a neurologist. They idea of studying medicine then specializing would be relevant to being a neurologist, not a neuropsychologist.

Maybe somebody can answer- Someone studying with the goal of being a clinical neuropsychologist in Canada could take a masters in developmental psychology (or similar), after their (Honours?) bachelor and prior to their Neuropsych doctoral program -- and be able to perform psychotherapy (specifically, couples therapy for those with neurodevelopmental & neuropsychological disorders) in addition to the typical (doctoral level) neuropsychological assessments and interventions; correct?

Clinical Neuropsychology and Clinical Psychology are actually very similar, from what I understand. They both have a 'clinical' focus, more or less meaning that they are geared more towards treating patients as opposed to research. Many of their educational requirements overlap, and one of the defining features of clinical neuropsychology training is a 1 year long pre-doctoral fellowship training (so before you finish your phd or psyd), and then a 2 year post doctoral fellowship training period. Edit: someone below described it perfectly, they are essentially clinical psychologists with additional training. A regular Neuropsychologist will likely be taking more classes focused on conducting research and studies, going through statistics and research analysis, and fewer classes for dealing with patients directly. There isn't really a defined path for becoming either type of neuropsychologist, so if you're really interested it's best to speak with college advisers and do plenty of research online. I'm only beginning the path myself, so please take everything I've said with a grain of salt!
@watcherwlc53
@watcherwlc53 4 жыл бұрын
in all cases you would need a PhD. Look closely at the programs and what they say about their classes and their students. If you intend to practice with patients, you need to make sure your program offers clinical training and a path to licensure (and not just training in research)
@cyoung6877
@cyoung6877 4 жыл бұрын
Much of the difference is just the name a university calls the program, think Government and Politics vs. Political Science. That said, generally, Clinical Psychology is the over arching profession/degree/license and then you can specialize from there in areas like: neuropsychology, child psychology, forensic psychology, etc. If you want to be a clinical neuropsychologist, you must first earn a PhD or PsyD in clinical psychology and then complete post doctorate training in neuropsychology. Another comparison, medical school, you must earn you MD to be a medical doctor, but then earn post doctoral training to become a psychiatrist, pediatrician, OBGYN, etc.

Clinical neuropsychologist assess neurocognitive functioning in patients with neurological or brain issues. neuropsychologist focus on research as opposed to healthcare. Clinical psychologist treat mental disorders with psychotherapy. Education might overlap but they all perform different things.

At least in most states in the US, as far as I know, if you are any kind of licensed psychologist, you can practice therapy and you could learn psychoanalytic skills if you wanted to, but, it's a whole different kind of training taking you in a whole different direction. So I have doubts as to how many practitioners might do that. Even though possibly they could.
@caffemocca8855
@caffemocca8855 4 жыл бұрын
I know you asked this 6 years ago so my answer is probably no longer helpful for you, but for anyone that read this comment, let me tell you: At least in the US, a neuropsychologist usually IS a psychologist that study additional post-doctoral training in neuropsychology. They are classified as cognitive or clinical neuropsychology. Cognitive psychologists usually work in academic settings, doing research and teaching. They usually don't treat patients because they didn't have the training in clinical psychology. Clinical neuropsychology is a subset of neuropsychology that deals with the clinical aspect (hence the name, duh). They treat patients with neurological conditions that affect their mind, emotions, & behaviors. A clinical neuropsychologist IS ALWAYS a clinical psychologist first before they became a clinical neuropsychologist, while the reverse isn't true. Therefore, a good clinical neuropsychologist is a good clinical psychologist. Clinical neuropsychologists are the specialist among clinical psychologists. They are more advanced, either in education and (should be) competencies.
