Haydn wrote the Anthem during the wars of Austria vers Napoleon Even when Francis of Habsburg Lothringen was on paper still emperor of the holy Empire the country de facto no more existed The reason why Francis decided to finish the Farce and became emperor of Austria The real reason why Haydn wrote the Anthem for the imperial Family was to encourage the people in the hard time of wars in Napoleon Times So the Anthem is wellknown as Volkshymne ( people Anthem) By the way it had certainly Text God preserve Francis the emperor Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser The nicer Version is certainly the Anthem after 1867 in the Austro hungarian Version who was used in all 7 languages in the Double monarchy. Never again after an Anthem existed in several languages My Favorite is in Italian Serbidiolo But czech hungarian romanian Poiish crotian Version nice too Viribus Unitis
