I will do the exact same Hike, but other way around and starting in Akureyri in the 3rd week of September and reaching Skogar hopefully around 7th or 8th of October. I cant wait to start. Will be a lot of fun. But I have to carry all my food for the whole trip, cause all huts will be closed ( maybe Landmannalaugar will be still open, when I`m lucky )....so it will be a bit of a workout. And there will be more or less no chances to get a Lift. So I reduced my every day hiking distance down to only 12miles. Greets from Germany

@@MiguelGomezMountainRunner Many Thanks....but I guess it will. I`m hiking the Icelandic Highlands since more then 3 Decades and the last Trip was a Solo Snowshoeing Hike from Skogar to Hrauneyjar Mountainhotel what is 20miles north of Landmannalaugar alongside the F26. Took me nearly 13 days, because of a Monster Shitload of Snow partially nearly 20 feet high and total Whiteouts on Fimmvorduhals and near Hrapntinnusker.........and with Snowshoes you will get so much slower. Excellent video. Traveled Montreal Doha to Cape Town earlier this year on Q suite as a surprise to my father for an African Safari. Amazing trip. Lounge experience in Doha was first class. Had a shower at the lounge. Now surprising both my parents on Q suites Seattle to Doha to Amritsar this fall. Did a city tour in Doha for a longer layover which I thought was worth the time and money. They speed you through immigration if you are part of the tour group. Highly recommended for those with longer layovers.

Hi Mauricio, I did this hike in January, so I think Feb would be fine. But make sure to take at least a basic avalanche course so you know how to judge terrain and weather. Also, it’s safer to go with at least one partner, with everyone carrying an avalanche beacon and a small metal snow shovel. 👍

Pro tip, call the taxi to pick you up at the hotel, it is 24/7. It will drop you off at the trailhead. When you top out at BA trailhead, head to the BA lodge (if cold) and you can call the taxi for a return. It is very quick and affordable. In the winter months it is rarely busy.

Hi Ellen, thanks for watching the video! I booked this tour directly through the Hielo Y Aventura website at hieloyaventura.com. It’s the Safari Azul tour, and yes I notice they now want to charge over $300 USD (“official” rate of 911 ARS to USD) for that tour…outrageous! 🤯 You might be able to get a slight discount if you exchange US $100 bills locally to get the “blue” rate (currently 1400 ARS to 1 USD). But you’ll have to bring a lot of cash into the country and then exchange it at a local store (unofficially).

@MiguelGomezMountainRunner
@MiguelGomezMountainRunner 2 ай бұрын
We ran into a solo hiker going opposite our direction (North to South) who was doing just that. He said it was spectacular, but you really need to pay attention to water sources in the north. The interior of the country is very dry and can have long stretches without water sources. We used a Black Diamond I-Tent. It’s a bit heavy (5 lbs) and not very spacious, but fully waterproof and dust proof if fully zipped up. I would avoid an ultralight tent with a lot of ventilation as the winds will blow rain and/or dust into your tent. In some places, you’ll get very wet, in other places you’ll be covered with dust by morning.

Your video really captured the trail. I did one of the first R2R2R's back in the early 90's, also in about 19 hours. We added some miles on the Tonto to make it an even 50. We went in May so we had much longer daylight. It was in the 20's at 4am at the south rim, six foot snow drifts at the north rim, 90 degrees at Phantom Ranch by late afternoon, and in the 20's again at the south rim at 10pm. Fun.

Miguel, your suggestions are spot on. I did one of the first R2R2R's back in the early 90's, also in about 19 hours. We added some miles on the Tonto to make it an even 50. Your preparation, gear, fuel, clothing and training is almost exactly what we did back then. My favorite trail food was a baked potato smothered in butter. We did at least one long hike or run every few weeks, starting at 20 miles and culminating in a couple of 40 milers. Also, we reduced our mileage the last two weeks so we were fully recovered. We went in May and it was in the 20's at 4am at the south rim, six foot snow drifts at the north rim at noon, 90 degrees at Phantom Ranch by late afternoon, and in the 20's again at the south rim at 10pm. Fun. I will offer a suggestion. I don't like the idea of counting on random folks on the trail to report if you haven't come back. They might be helpful in locating your corpse after a search starts the next day, but none of the dozen strangers you talk to is going to notice your failure to return to civilization, much less report it. A better plan is to have a single person who has your itinerary and has agreed to be waiting for you, either in person at the hotel or somewhere by a phone.

This was the trip that convinced me to spend the money on an InReach Mini.

@MiguelGomezMountainRunner
@MiguelGomezMountainRunner 3 ай бұрын
Hi Robert, there are very few trees throughout Iceland currently. The coastlines have some vegetation, but mostly grass and small shrubs. The interior highlands are very stark, dusty, and surprisingly dry (except near rivers and glaciers). The interior is very primordial and other-worldly. As I understand, the original settlers cut down almost all the birch forests that inhabited the coastal areas to burn and build houses.

This is a great video, thanks for sharing it! I'm planning to fastpack the O trek in November. Looks like you're a runner as well from your name here. Do you think you could've done the circuit in 6 days if you stayed in the tents they provide and rented sleeping bags?
@MiguelGomezMountainRunner
@MiguelGomezMountainRunner 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely! For the most part, the terrain is not very difficult. The only part that could be hazardous is the descent from John Garner pass if you had to do that in rain or subfreezing weather. Just make sure you have shoes with an aggressive tread and sticky rubber (e.g., Vibram). But otherwise, if you’re not carrying a tent, bag, and sleeping pad, and just keep it light in the clothing (not sacrificing safety, should be a piece of cake. Though, I don’t know if they’ll let you do it in only 6 days. The min allowable might be 8 or 9 days. I also recommend staying in at least one of the refuges on the south side of the park. Pricey, but might be nice to get a break and have a hot shower. 😉 Also, you might want to watch Jeff Pelletier’s video. He fast packed the O recently.
