I love that Hogwood gave the introduction for this work instead of the usual dull narrator. Also helps that he’s one of my favorite conductors

Germany 1987. I was a young IN officer. My family had just suffered a terrible tragedy and I wanted to be home. I just got back from another maneuver cycle at Hohenfels. Constantly miserable, wet, on the verge of hypothermia, no more than 2 hrs sleep a night. We got back to Ferris Barracks and this was on AFN. We all looked at each other and fought back the tears.

When I was in HS, an Army recruitment RV came to the school and this was the movie they showed in it. It helped motivate me to enroll in ROTC in college. Someone below commented it makes him tear up. When they sing that part "No it wasn't always easy. It wasn't always fair. But when freedom called we answered. We were there."

I remember this song. They played it for us. At Sheridan Base Theatre at Fort Sill. It was was a Motivation to let us know what and why, we where there. It was our Turn to step to the Plate. Was 19 at the time. The year was 1987. Now here I am going on 56 in August. Now the Commercial is a cartoon. Named Emma and her Two Mom's. And they wonder why the world is Laughing at us.

Thank you, Larry Lapetto, and is monetized Voices of History KZfaq channel, for your videos on WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghan/Iraq wars honoring us, the veterans who have served today!!! I thank God that 30 years ago, in 1989, I met Command Sergeant Major Henry L. Sellers and Lieutenant Colonel Wilson, Englewood High School Army JROTC, that gave us speeches like this here in Fargo in 2019. Because of them, I decided to enlist as a PFC in the summer of my 11th grade (1992) to serve my country and finally become a Sergeant, commissioned (1999) at Georgia Military College to become a 2nd Lieutenant of great men. Now we get to pass on those values to the next generation of heroes who will carry the MANTLE despite the political whims in the USA! Like the song, I heard in 1989, "My hometown, it is not like this, but that's alright with me. See, I'm out here for my hometown. Cause Freedom isn't Free!!" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q76Podl7npi9ZqM.html

I was USN and not in the nice days either. I served (77-81) and again not nice. We watched this commercial on my ship CV64 and ALL my DIVISION stood up and SALUTED THE TV. THE MILITARY GET IT, the USA at the time DID NOT. Thank you US ARMY for being our BROTHERS ALSO. Finally, US COAST GUARD, always gets no respect. THOSE GUYS are also ON THE LINE. Just because you are small, doesn't mean you are not FAMILY. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

@@edmerritt8610 I'm not sure it would work now. The military and society have changed to such a degree that I think a commercial like this would be seen as far too 'patriotic' by many. It's a shame.

I listened to this song [on AFRTS] for 10 years while serving as a civilian in PACAF. One minor point: I recall this song differently; instead of '...when FREEDOM called...' I remember hearing the phrase '... when DUTY called...'. I wonder when this change occured?
