Grass in my orchard is a problem. The grass is setaria which I think is an African grass. This grass is clumpy and grows around half a meter a month to over two meters tall. The only good thing about this grass is when it’s cut it covers the ground with around 20cm of organic matter that rots down into the soil.

Does your rooting media contain only a 50:50 mixture of perlite & vermiculite and no potting soil? Thanks you. Excellent video tutorial.

Okay, this may be a silly question. So if every season these laterals continue to grow, and we keep doing the 1-2-3 cut method on the new wood of the same laterals, over time will they stop growing? Or will they continue to push new growth, and if so how long should we let it get before cutting into old wood?

Unlike winter pruning, which stimulates growth, summer pruning stops growth. But, timing of summer pruning is critical and Orin explains this in the video. So, if you prune at the right time, the lateral will stop growing that season and grow very little from there on. It will thicken and get stronger, which is what you need to carry the weight of the fruit.

Thank you so much for this video. I am currently researching the most suitable fruit trees for a community garden in Melbourne Australia. We wanted to buy dwarf or semi-dwarf trees so they can be more easily managed. Until I listened to your video I did not realise the downside of the dwarf trees as we want the garden to be fully organic. They will be planted with WaterUps open wicking system so we have the consistent water supply covered. I am really enjoying your very clear videos. The information is presented at a speed that allows time to think about what you are saying and the dot points and really clear photos to illustrate your points really enhance your presentations. Thank you so much for all the care that you have taken to make your videos so easy to follow and understand.

I love this and you! My Dad was a big rose guy and as he is no longer with us, I was delighted to find your video! The way you explain this process is very similar to how my Dad would speak. Fun and informative! I was gifted some cuttings from the very famous rose garden 'El Rosedal' in Buenos Aires and I think your video will assist me in not killing them and doing them justice! THANK YOU!

This is an excellent teaching! Thank you. I am curious about trees that come as whips and there simply is not growth of good scaffolding or laterals. What is going on? I’m starting to think this is not the way to buy a tree. Regarding the 6 week old fruit bud… can you specify how you would remove those flowers?

Could I apply this perpendicular V form to apricots as well? Last year - without having any knowledge - I've bought an apricot tree that has - by coincidence or on purpose - this "2 leg system". The tree is a very vigorous grower and left unpruned the nursery said it needs 6-8 meter distance from another tree. p.s. Thank you so much for all your informative videos presented in a didactic way so beginners can understand!

Normally, I'd advise against doing any major cuts now. But if your branches aren't in leaf, then you aren't wasting energy by removing them. Was it a family tree with a few cultivars on the same tree? I'd cut a branch or two back, to a 10" or 6" stub. Have a look to see if that part of the branch is still alive. Have you been using any lawn feed with weed killer near the tree? Put grass clipping from a treated lawn in your compost, or use it to mulch your tree? It sounds like your tree is in a bad way, and that something major has happened to it recently. Removing one or two branches to a stub won't do much harm at this stage. It will also let you see just how far they have died back. If all else fails, you can cut the entire top off a small tree and graft on new scion wood. You can do this just before bud break, in the new year. On a larger tree, you can graft onto the stumps of major branches. If you look up a channel called JSacadura, he has a lot of information on grafting. Hope that helps, and you save / over graft your tree.

I saw your instructions too late for my young apple trees .... When they have formed looong laterals already, could I cut all the new growth away including some growth of last year and start from there using your method of 1-2-3 bud? Maybe I loose a year, but I guess better to get a good structure now rather to have loooong laterals for the rest of your and the trees life?!

Good video however I’m not clear on the significance of 3 nodes when you also mentioned you can prune where ever you want. Is 3nodes better? Is 4, 5, and 6 just as good? If so then why call out 3nodes at all.

I have a Santo Rosa. Finding it very difficult to deside between leaving and thinning out these, what I call watery growth. I want to keep the tree at a reachable height which result in a lot of stump cuts at the top of the leader branches. Do not know what to do with those.

Hi, i'm from Algeria with Mediterranean weather, i've several fruit trees (stone ones like nectarine/peaches/apricots), i noticed for most trees that growth for shoots is established in two phases, first phase in spring and slow down with fruit growing/maturing and the second phase after fruit harvesting during summer. The rate growth in spring is largely predominant over the growth in summer, that explain the store/use of carbohydrates. My understating is that each tree species has specific growth curve depending also the location/weather. With your explanation, now i understand why the winter grafting is most appropriate period with high rate of success, the grafted trees that i have done this year shows 90% success in comparison with other seasons. thank you soo much for sharing this valuable knowledge.

Pruning doesn't create anything. It's a misuse of language ; it just generates a tissue response (growth & wound healing) of the plant. Only God is able to create matter from scratch & life.

I’m new to fruit trees but have had my apple tree for about ten years. I heavily pruned it last year and it only has about twelve apples this year. I only took back height since it is inside an enclosed garden so need to keep it below about 10 feet or so. Last year I had to thin about 200 apples or so off it. My dwarf Fuji tree has fruit on it and not ready to harvest until Late September October but you still prune in August I’m confused?
